Title: Not Eating As Much
Post by: Grace's Mom on November 02, 2006, 14:44:08 pm
For about the past two weeks Grace, 7 months old today, has not been drinking too many oz at each bottle.  She use to drink 2 6oz bottles and 2 8oz bottles and then a small middle of the night feed which we are going to start the weaning process on tonight.  Now she drinking maybe 4oz each bottle and then slightly more at her bedtime bottle....6oz at most.

Is it normal for them to stop drinking as much?  I have upped her solids a bit to compensate but she just doesn't seem that hungry.

I took her to the Dr. the other day and they said she has some fluid in her right ear and she is of course teething.

Should I be worried?

Thanks.
Mel

It sounds to me that she is ready to drop one of the bottles, check out the bottle forum to compare others who have dropped bottles at this age.  If i remember correctly dd dropped one at that age as well.  Good Luck!

Hi Mel
dd did the same at about 8 months - cut back on all her bottles and seemed not interested. After a couple of weeks of this I dropped the 11am bottle and jiggled her routine slightly. She then actually had more milk and I had to put her remaining 3 bottles up to 9oz each! This is quite usual apparently as they are more hungry for it when you offer it less often. If you go to solid food FAQs there are some good routines for solids & food when going from 4 to 3 bottles.
by the way have you tried the usual going up a teat size? it might be as simple as that!

Kathryn, I didn't think of that....going up a nipple size.  It is time to get new ones anyway so maybe we will get a few of the others ones to try.  Thanks.

Hi Melissa,

It is defintiely worth while going upt to the next teat size to see if that makes any difference.

If she is still taking fewer oz, then would definitley suggest that it may be time to drop a bottle.

You might also find that weaning the middle of the night feed, will make her take extra oz in her daytime bottles.

HTH, Let us know how you get on.

hi [Mel, sorry for cutting into your thread but you know Maja is doing the same...]

SO my dd [6 months 1 week, not teething so bad right now but still and just after strep throat incident] doesn't take as much milk as before. we're actually down to 3 bottles a day + DF now. and DF is the only time she drinks the whole 180~200ml [some 7 oz]. but she just doesn't want to drink her milk from the bottle, so I have to feed her with a spoon and as feeding milk with a spoon is just terrible I mix it with cereal so she gets a good meal but not as much milk as I'd like her to have. apart from that she's having different veggies and apples [doeasn't like any other friut and seems to be allergic to banana].
so i don't really know what to do- force more milk into her through cereal or just move on?
BTW, we're on size 4 Avent teat.

TIA
Monika

Has your lo been on antibiotics for the strep throat?

We found that when DS was on antibiotics his appetite was very small, but after a week or so of being off the antibiotics, he got his appetite back again.

oh, didn't think of that! it may be the case as she was on antibiotics. so I should just wait, see and don't panic, right? ;)
thanks :)

Hi Monika,

Yes, see how she goes.  When they are not well and especially on antibiotics, their appetites decrease dramatically.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Today Grace has drinken only 7.5 oz when by this time she would normally have had 20oz.  What to do?  We bought size 4 nipples and will be trying them tonight for her last bottle.

Melissa,

It is definitely worth trying the next size up nipples.  Let us know how it goes.

If that does not help, it might be worth considering dropping a bottle.

Is your lo teething?  If so, have you tried rubbing some teething gel on her gums a few minutes before a feed - this may help.

Hugs xxxxxx

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Thankfully after I wrote my last post she actually finished her 6oz bottle.    :D

We'll try the new nipple tonight and see how that goes.

Tomorrow I will try the teething gel. She is teething so that may be an issue as well.

It is just so weird because she doesn't cry for food. So strange.

What would/should her schedule look like if we dropped a bottle?  If I need to post somewhere else about that just let me know and I will get right on it  ;D

That's great news about her drinking 6 oz.

If she is teething, then this could very well be the reason why she is being so fussy on her bottles.

I would definitely give the new teats and the teething gel a try for a few days and see how that goes before dropping down to 3 bottles.

When we were on 3 bottles, we did morning bottle, afternoon bottle around 2:00 / 2:30 and the bottle before bed.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Mel!

Check out Janeelle's thread.  Seems to be an age thing because we are all having the same trouble.

THANKS EVERYONE[/b][/size]

Thanks for the advice.  We upped her to a #4 Avant Nipple and now she is drinking almost as good as she was before.

You all are the best.
