Title: How long until what I eat shows up in my milk?
Post by: hoosiermama on November 06, 2006, 01:32:00 am
My ds has become very gassy and has started spitting up quite a bit.  I am trying to figure out if it is somthing that I am eating or drinking that is causing this.  How long until what I eat and drink until it shows up in my milk?  Does anyone know?

The severity of a food reaction is generally related to the degree of baby’s sensitivity and to the amount of the problem food that mom ate—the more food eaten and the greater baby’s sensitivity, the more severe the reaction. Food reactions may occur within minutes, but symptoms in breastfed babies more commonly show up 4-24 hours after exposure. If baby has an acute reaction to a new food, or to a food that mom ate a large amount of, then he will probably be back to normal within a couple of hours. If baby is sensitive to a food that mom eats frequently, symptoms may be ongoing.

That's from kellymom. So basically a few minutes to 24 hours - not enormously helpful!
But remember that for the larger majority of nursing mothers their diet is not a problem so consider other things first before you start the big step of food elimination.

At his age babies sometimes get much faster at feeding and gulp in a bit more air which could mean more gassiness and spitting up. Has that happened?

Actually yes, he went from eating for 40-60 minutes to 15-20!  Thanks, I'll go back to eating chocolate now! :D
