Title: Weigh in on Peanut Butter
Post by: nursekat on July 02, 2007, 16:42:11 pm
Hi I noticed on some of the other threads some of you are giving peanut butter after a year, however in the US I have heard info on waiting for 2 years or 3 years even.  Maybe I should put this in the debate forum.  ;)  What do you all think or what are you doing?

I also think I am going to err on being extra cautious as dd has an egg allergy already.  She tested negative on her blood tests for peanuts but if she's prone to becoming allergic to foods I'd like to play it safe.  Just wanted to sound out what the rest of you felt about the issue.

Also, has anybody heard about using other nut butters as a substitue?  Like almond butter or cashew butter?  These are potentially less allergenic nuts perhaps??

We started peanut butter I think at about 14 mo. We have no family history at all of any nut allergies so we weren't worried.

In your case, I would err on the side of caution since there's an allergy already. I've seen some people around here using soy nut butter instead, or almond or cashew butter like you said. Those nuts can still be allergens but it's not nearly as common as peanuts.

We use soy butter for Mouse.  We were told no nuts until she is 5 d/t my asthma.  The taste is almost like peanut butter, the texture is the same, but the oil sometimes separates.

I didn't give Henry peanut butter until he was 2 because I'm neurotic. No history of allergies, no reason to wait but I did.

We gave our LO peanut butter at 12 months, but he had no history of allergies. If he had we would have likely waited!!!

Dd had some digestive issues, so we waited until age 2 on our ped's rec.  That said, PB&J is her new favorite!

LOL..right there with Sarah.  I haven't given DD any just yet and don't intend to until she is 2, and I am just fine with that.  :)

I gave E PB at about 7 months cause back then I had no idea we were supposed to wait :P.  So B got PB pretty early too.  Although we have no family history of allergies so I wasnt really worried.

In your case I would wait though if she already has one allergy.

I'm neurotic too!  ;D I haven't given dd pb yet (she'll be three in Oct.) because I'm more afraid of her developing sensitivity later on.  Probably no reason to worry.  I did see a recommendation from some Pediatric group(American College of Pediatricians?) to wait until 3.  So I am.
I have a friend who is doing the same thing but will give her dd almond butter.  It is expensive as the ens but really yummy!  I think you can order it online(probably google it) or health food stores should have it.  HTH

I would definately wait until your lo was at least 2 years old before trying peanut butter or any other nut butter for that matter. Allergic reactions to other nuts are just as serious. You are right to be cautious due to your lo already having an egg allergy.

We had NO history of food allergies, on either side of the family, until my niece was diagnosed with peanut, egg, and some fruit allergies.   It is hard to explain to others that the food allergies can come from no where.

We are waiting till age 2.  Our Dr. cannot believe how many of my lo friends are told to have peanut butter before the age of 2.

we did it at 13 mo, but not regularly, just occasionally in a pbj
I thought i'd read somewhere that pb is ok, but nuts aren't.
Better to be cautious I guess though.
Feeling a bit guilty now.
Dh fed ds some banana bread I made yesterday.  Totally has nuts in it- walnuts. whoops :(

With a history of any kind of allergy I'd wait until at least 3. I've actually read somewhere 5 if you have a history.

I waited until around 2.

The American Peanut Council (and let's be honest these are the guys who want to sell the peanuts) say if there is a family history you shoild wait until 3:

A study is currently underway in the UK to study the link between allergy and early exposure and they are looking for parents to volunteer their babies for peanut exposure:

That's got to be some parents committed to the cause of science :o

Yes we still have an appointment pending with the allergist - she had to go through the blood testing and does not have an allergy to peanuts but it makes me wonder if she's more likely to develop one if I give her pb since she's already "prone" to allergies?  So I'll have to ask that in a couple of weeks when we see the doc.

Love all the responses, thank you!

Yikes! Mira had PB for the first time today! She kinda liked it. She's 15.5 months. No allergies, no family history of allergies to anything. I don't intend on giving it to her loads, but it was nice to see her enjoy it actually - she's such a fussy eater now!

But, like Kristi ... feeling guilty...

We have no allergies here so gave lo his first taste around 1 yr old.  He loves PB!!

But if there had been any allergy issues like you have then I would have certainly waited.

My SIL gave DD her first peanut butter   :o

Fortunately no history of allergies and she was just fine. This was about 1- 1/2. I never give it to her, as prefer something healthier, but she has nuts on occassion.

The doc gave the OK for pb with Mimi at her 12 mo check since there's no family history of any allergies.  I gave it to her when she was about 13 mo.  It gave her diarrhea.  I've also noticed that anything with any trace of peanuts or peanut oil gives her diarrhea.

I'll mention it at her next appointment but, I'm not planning on giving it to her again until she's closer to 3 yo.
