Title: Books for babies up to 2 years - can you recommend one?
Post by: berryfish on September 07, 2007, 19:49:02 pm
Does anyone have any recommendations for books for younger babies?

My DD is around 8 months and is getting interested in books.  She goes over to them in her play area and likes it when I read to her.  We have a few books that she likes... she seems to like ones with babies' pictures like Baby Boo! and short text.  My MIL bought us some Sandra Boynton, but even those lose her attention.

Thanks for suggestions!

When babysitting for a friend I read her DS "Each Peach Pear Plum" and loved it so much I went out and bought it for Sophie!  I bought another by the same authors called "Peepo" - Can't remember their names though  ::)

There's one called, Let's Go Walking that has a nice cadence to it.  I don't know the author and it's in ds's room (who's asleep, sorry!)  What about books that the words are a song?  The melody should keep her interested.  Pat the Bunny, with the tactile pages is nice, too.

Usbourne touchy feely books have always been a fave here, especially the "That's not my...bunny/puppy/ fairy/tractor". I put them around the room now on the settee and tables and DD crusies and looks at them and touches their pages, they are also really bite proof and sturdy  :)

I like the Amazing Baby range.

http://www.amazingbaby.net/

Ella really loves the Amazing Baby, I Love You book.  Lots of black and white pictures of faces.  She will look at it for ages while I read it and the pages are really thick - even for a board book.

Here she is reading Baby's Day!

My son absolutely loooooooved The Backyardigans book (i think that is what it is called too). It is a board book and it is full of bright colors. He still likes reading it but that was his favorite for at least a year.

Favourites at the moment are:

The Big Red Bath
and
Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea (my Mum sent this to me and changed the Mummy's hair colour to mine with a piece of paper, he can't wait to get to the end!)
Both very colourful and fun to read - still!

Hungry Catepillar is also on the hit list - I stick my fingers behind the holes and he follows me, giggling! Right now he's playing with a couple of French lift- the- flap books!
HAVE A GOOD READ

Some of our family favorites (we have an 11 month old, but she's liked the same books for months):

"I love you through and through"

"Hooray for Fish" by Lucy Cousins, very imaginative and great illustrations, comes in regular book only, but it's so big that our lo acts like it's a movie screen and doesn't realle mess with the pages.

Another fun one is "Pop up a page Nursery Rhymes" no author, but made by Parragon Publishing in the UK.  Great pop ups, and the book was only $5!

Also fun for practicing turning pages, and playing peek-a-boo is "Baby says peekaboo" by DK publishing.

My dd LOVES "Daddy Hugs" and "Mama Hugs" by Karen Katz, we've had them for ages (she's now 22 months) and she doesn't tire of them, they're great because of bright pictures and counting to 10 for later age.

My personal favorites (and she LOVES then too) are "123" and "ABC" by Alison Jay. Again, the colours and pics held her interest when she was younger, now she's interested in repeating the words and numbers. The pictures are brilliant, they tell a story relating to classic stories so I think when she's older it has added features.

Heres another we just borrowed from Library and I'm going to keep my open for others of same title.  Especially good if you have a cat yourself.  We've had this book for nearly a week and have read it about 20 times already ;)

Leorah's favourite book at the moment is "Whose Bottom?", it's a rhyming lift the flap book. She now loves it and squeals with laughter if we pat hers, ours, the dogs or her toys' bums and shout "whose bottom?!". She also loves books with Elmer the patchwork elephant and "that's not my puppy", we have stuck a picture of our dog in the back page that says "that's my puppy" and every day she gets as excited as the first time!

I was chatting to a speech and language therapist the other day and she was saying how great they are for encouraging speech an vocab. She said that the best books for babies are the ones that have black, red and white pictures.  Babies also love faces!! So the amazing baby range would be perfect!!

And for the toddlers she said to avoid books with pictures that have to much background, there are books that take out the background so they are literallly objects on a white pages.  Ive also found they love real photos! Harvey especially likes his animal board book with lots of real animal photos in it!

HTH!! Any books/stories are great I think!!

Maisy Mouse series.
The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear by Don/Audrey Wood.  She "reads" that one out loud.  We soooo need to record that.  I just found the sequel Merry Christmas Hungry Bear!  For her stocking.     ;)

William adores the book Walking Through the Jungle by Julie Lacome..  I think it's great too as it stimulates all sorts of animal noises, actions and words..

I read it so often with him that I dont even have to look at it now lol..

www.amazon.co.uk/Walking-Through-Jungle-Julie-Lacome/dp/074453643X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195993501&sr=8-2

That's not my...train/car/bear etc

Bath one baby http://www.amazon.com/Bath-One-Baby-Melanie-Joyce/dp/0721481809/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202548834&sr=1-1

This book is GREAT!  Its thick pages are graduated so it's easy for teh baby to turn them.  There is a text that gently rhymes (take one baby, put him in the bath, tickle his toes to make him laugh...) and the pictures on one side are of the baby going through the bath up to the lullaby while on the other side of the page there are sperate pictures of things that can be found in the main story (eg the soap, a sponge, a rubber duck...)

My cat just sleeps http://www.amazon.com/Cat-Just-Sleeps-Joanne-Partis/dp/019279146X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202549067&sr=1-1

This one has great pictures with big faces on the cats and the girl, that both mine loved to stare at at that age.  The cat is sleepy but she doesn't know that when she's asleep he goes out to play with his friends!

Cleo the Cat http://www.amazon.com/Cleo-Cat-Caroline-Mockford/dp/184148427X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202549216&sr=1-2

This is another cat book, but it's SO lovely.

edit - I'm sorry.  i provided links to these on amazon but they'e disappeared

I thought I'd add some of Leorah's recent favourites -

any Maisy Mouse book by Lucy Cousins

Hairy McLairy from Donaldsons Dairy by Lynley Dodd, great for dog loving LO's

Doggies - a counting and barking book, our dog starts howling when we read this book so fun for the whole family  ;)

Who's in the loo? Funny for grown ups too  :)

Goodnight Moon, I bought this after reading reviews on Amazon and thought it looked awful when it came but as all the reviews said Leorah absolutely loves it, it is a perfect bedytime book!

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson - Great ryhming story about a witch that gives a bunch of animals a lift on her broom.

Sorry I haven't written the authors for some of the books but they are in Leorah's room and she is in bed!

Mommy Hugs is a huge hit here. Mostly because I snuggle/cuddle/pat as the mommy's in the book do.  DD loves it and giggles through the whole thing.

Also Where's Baby's Belly Button is a huge favorite.

Other favorites include, Good Night Moon, Good Night Chicago (similar but Chicago themed), Very Hungry Caterpillar, Going On a Bear Hunt

I've been using books to help extend my lo's tummy time when he didn't like it. ;D To add a couple that haven't been mentioned.

Dinosaur Roar by Paul & Henrietta Stickland is a favourite, it comes in a board book and pop up form. Gorgeous illustrations, so colourful.
Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli's board book which lists good things and bad things to eat... "Blueberries are yummy... Blue crayons are yucky" I haven't seen Big Little or Quiet Loud by the same author but I love that idea. Illustrations are simple and bold.

Hi there

Also have an 8month old so have read this with much interest.

Thought if in the UK, you might find this website good - I have bought a couple of books from them for Christmas and they seem really reasonably priced.

Ben loves books but has a few favorites.  We have a board book called Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs!  that he loves.  It's a great book for reading together with funny voices. He likes to read a Thomas book that has sound buttons and a steering wheel all by himself.  His FAVORITE book, though, is one called To Be a Kid.  It's a book full of actual photos of children from around the world.  He wants us to read this one over and over, and he loves the pictures.  I love that it broadens his view of what it means to be alive in the world.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and other similar Bill Martin books.
My son is just about 5 months old and will totally tune into on these books (has since about 3.5 months). I think because the images are big, simple and colourful (Eric Carle is the illlustrator) and the prose is repetitive.
I'm a teacher (and was a teacher-librarian) and found that most children love these books up to age 6 or 7.

My 10 month old loves bath books - I looks for books that have a rhyme or aliteration, or ones that you can sing. She has a bath book called 'Katie the kitten' and she loves it when I emphasize the rhyme and the two 'k' sounds. Also - I'm not a lover of singing but she loves music so I bought a nursery rhyme book that plays the music as you read. It has Baa Baa Black Sheep, Hickory ory, Humpty Dumpty and Twinkle Twinkle little star - all classics and the whole book can be read in about 15 mins. She's beginning now to turn pages and trying to press the buttons for the music - and they do say that nursery rhymes are good for the old IQ!

My five-month-old daughter LOVES Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ABC.  It has captivated her since she was only a couple of months old.  The pictures are big, graphic and bright, and the rhyme is fantastic.  I sing it when she's upset and it almost always gets a smile.
