I have a 1 yr. old getting ready to switch from formula (soy) to milk. Problem is she does NOT do well with cheese - gets severe tummy aches and constipation from small amts. She does ok with yogurt & pudding but I'm afraid to switch to whole milk especially since she had to go to a soy based formula. Any ideas or thoughts? Wendee

Soy milk! For now anyway.
-
That's what I think, too. Dr. said whole milk but I'm afraid. :-\ Wendee
-
Mine said give my lactose intolerant babe soy milk. I went with lactose free for 6 months, then whole. Sometimes ya gotta go with tht mama feeling. KWIM?
-
i agree with pp :)
-
I agree to. If your dd does not do well with cheese then I would either offer soy milk or continue with soy formula.
-
soy milk for sure. :-*
-
WOW :o ! Thanks everyone for the input. I feel better now going with the soy milk. Wendee :)

Ok, since my last post I'd switched. Biomom kept making faces everytime I said I was going to start lo on "soy". So, yesterday, she had 2 oz. milk mixed in with her formula for 2 bottles. (6 oz. formula & 2 oz. whole milk for each). Needless to say, surprise........tummy ache. Not as bad as with the cheese, but bad enough that I don't care what biomom thinks when she gets her back she can mess her tummy up if she wants but while in my care she will be starting on soy! (Do ya think that's so bitchy of me?) Wendee :P
-
Have you considered goat's milk? Just a thought...
-
no, I hadn't. She's on soy formula so I just figured soy milk would be like the natural progression. That sounds yucky though, is it? When I had my own allergy testing done, I was allergic to goat's milk which I thought was goofy.
-
not bitchy at all i say go for it.the molecules in milk and goats milk are the same size so it may not suit her.its your choice really.we tried it here with the same reaction.
-
Not b!tchy at all! I think biomom sounds b!tchy if she doesn't care that LO has a tummy ache :'(, kwim?
:-* :-*
-
Forgot to say, I don't think your're bitchy either. Biomom doesn't obviously care as she should. ::) >:( You're doing a great job.
Re goat's milk, it might not hurt to try it. My ds gets a reaction from cow milk and loves his goat milk. Either way, good luck. :)

I think your right to go with soy milk. You could try goats milk as people are ok with it. My son reacts to it but then he reacts to soy aswell.
-
She's been on the formula / soy milk mix for 2 days and no tummy problems. So......I think I'm sticking with that for awhile. I told that to biomom last night and said if we go with regular milk she has severe tummy aches and gets constipated badly so it's in her best interest for now to do the soy. She seemed ok with it then. Wendee

New problem....................... now she's having reactions to yogurt which hasn't happened before. But, she also will have one or two good poops (shape, color, texture) and then a blowout of diarrhea - yellowy orange in color. (sorry, I know that tmi but I'm not sure what's going on here). Also, the way it is with foster children under 5 yrs. is that the state will reimburse for certain items grocerywise (like, eggs, pb, juice, cereal, & milk) so I asked the lady about it as she's on soy and she said she didn't think soy was on the list but "lactose free milk" was and goats milk and some other kind. So , is there a huge difference with all these kinds and do you have any idea how it may affect her. I don't mind buying the soy on my own but I don't know if it's filling her up like the formula as she's drinking a carton every 2 days. :o Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Wendee

Sounds like you have your hands full. I have been keeping up with your other thread about biomom, and wonder if she's fed something that might've also caused a reaction. I don't necesarily mean on purpose, but just that it happened.
Is this something that has been happening for more than a day? You definitely can see delayed reactions to foods, but I am wondering if it something else OR if she's just got a bit of a stomach bug. It might be worth discussing with her dr as for what to do next. :-\
-
biomom swears she only gave her what I sent for her to eat yesterday. Which is why I thought it was the yogurt. She's off all other dairy so I thought maybe it was too much for her even tho it hadn't been before.
It's been going on for the last 3 days. I don't think it's a bug as it's only happening once or twice & her other poops are good. At first I thought it was the soy that may be bothering her as she just started on straight soy milk Friday night. (Took a week to wean her off formula by mixing with soy). I can't ever get straight answers from her dr. that's when I can get through to the dr. or nurse - usually the receptionist fields the call and tells me what to do - she thinks she's an expert since she works there. ::) I can try tomorrow, tho.
-
I just posted on your sleep thread, but I just wanted to see how things had come along with the ped's office. Have you mentioned the receptionist giving medical advice to the nurse or doctor? I am sure the malpractice insurance company wouldn't be pleased to know the receptionist is giving medical advice. ::)

lol - I'm sure they wouldn't be happy either. I have mentioned it before when she told me to give Bella Benadryl for her allergies and she was only 9 mos. the pharmacist said - uh, no infants livers can't break down anithistamines. Stupid lady! Dr. office was not in today - they must've been on call this weekend or something. Will try first thing in the a.m. Going to go read your other post. Thank you for all your help! I don't know what I'd do without all you very kind BW friends! Wendee

LLLena - called the drs. office and talked to the nurse. She said that it sounds like she has a true lactose intolerance so that should be avoided. She said sometimes soy formula doesn't bother them as infants but can when they drink it in milk form ??? . So she said if the rice milk is working continue with that and that some are enriched with vitamins (the kind we have for Bella is) and she will get her nutrients from the other foods she's eating. As she gets more teeth she said we could supplement with chewable vitamins if we wanted. Just wanted to give you an update. Wendee

Thanks Wendee. I'm glad you were able to get an answer. So have you completely stopped the soy?
-
Yes. do you think that's ok?
-
yes, I think that's a really great idea since her night time became worse with it. I think you're doing a fab job, Wendee! Keep up the good work! :D
-
THANK YOU! :-* :-* :-* I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing and when I think I'm getting it right, everything changes all up on me so that really means a lot!
-
That is the way for everyone! We think we're getting down the routine and then the los change it up on us! LOL Don't hesitate to ask questions here, there are loads of really great resources and I couldn't have survived without bw or this site.
