Title: Physical Activity (To Tire Out) When Cold/Dark Outside - Ideas?
Post by: Mom to M&M on November 28, 2007, 12:36:26 pm
So all spring, summer and fall (weather permitting) we spent a LOT of time outdoors at nearby playgrounds and taking long walks. We live in a major city in a smaller apartment so that was crucial to DD (27.5 months) getting enoough physical activity. Now that it's winter it's getting quite cold and dark SO early (4:30 today) so it's really ahrd to do that in the afternoon. As such, what are some good ideas to still tire DD out enough after her nap? TIA!

The weather was the reason why Scotty dropped his nap. He just wasn't tired out enough.

I'd go out earlier in the morning (as soon as sun comes up) and try and tire her out in the morning. Then earlier lunch, earlier nap and an hour right after the nap and then indoor activities, like reading, craft, etc...

This may sound silly but Jack has a little trampoline, I bring it inside and let him jump away like crazy he LOVES it!!!!!! Good idea what Steffi said though about tiring her out in the morn

make an obstacle course in the living room with pillows, laundry basket, etc.  stuff they have to climb over, crawl through, etc.   :-\

I love the trampoline idea too.  We also have a play bowling set (you can make one with sock ball and empty soda bottles) and that gives Luke exercise just rolling the ball and setting all the pins back up over and over again.

We are dealing with the same issues here, but I do try to get outside with them in the a.m. even if it's for a 10 minute run around.  Just the bundling up itself to get outside is tiring enough, at least for me!   ;D

Emma-Lou has beaten me to it!

Have you room for a little trampoline? It's a complete lifesaver on days like that. I put on some music, or one of those music video channels, and he bounces away like a madman. (I've even been known to join in, boogy-ing away next to him :-[ :-[). Great exercise for us both, and really tires him out :D

Steffi - I'd like to do that but if I try an earlier nap (even with lots of physical activity first) DD just has a monstrously long crib party and falls asleep even later, if at all. So she tends to nap (on days she days) from about 12:30/12:45-2:15 or so. Then by the time she's out of her crib it's 2:30/2:40 and she usually doesn't want to go anywhere right away. Yesterday I couldn't get her to willingly leave the apartment until 3:30 and often it's more like 3:45.

As for the morning, I can try that but again by the time she's up and has breakfast and all it's usually close to 8:30. She again doesn't want to go anywhere (unless it's somewhere like her once a week gym class) until at least 9:30. So we can send a couple hours outside in the morning BUT often it's too cold for both her and me. So I'm looking for some good indoor things too to tire her out. The trampoline sounds fun but we don't have room right now for one!

Thanks also Sophie. I've tried the obstacle course in the past and it just made DD upset (she's quite particular about where things go) but maybe I'll try again. Bowling sounds fun too. I wish we had more space - our apartment is quite limiting! When we move in January we'll have much more space including a small backyard and a large basement/playroom.

How about putting on a music video and getting some instruments and dancing and singing?

Actually I tried that too but DD becomes like a zombie with television is on and then just wants to sit and watch it and not dance and jump and play... GRRR great ideas though - all of them. She's just a tough one with this issue...

I live in Nebraska, and the only time I don't let the kids go out is when the temps are in the single digits or there's a horrible cold wind. I despise the cold but we get all bundled up anyway and they love it. Since it's been getting dark so early, we've been able to walk up the block and see all the Christmas lights. Even just 15 minutes outside seems to be enough fresh air to wear them out. We lived in a small townhouse in DC before we moved here...that's when I gave up on trying to find ways to entertain Tyler inside and just went outside anyway.

On days that it's too cold to go out, I take them to the store (usually Target). Even if I have nothing to buy, they can run free where there's lots of space!

Thanks Melissa! We did go to the park for almost an hour this morning and walked around the grocery store too. It will definitely be easier when we move and have not only more room inside but also a small yard and nice street with good neighbors to even just walk and visit. It's even just good to hear that my DD isn't the only one hard to entertain inside! Well she's not always hard to entertain inside - but it requires MUCH more of my one-on-one attention and usually isn't very physical (more stuff like books, play-do, etc).

Here are some things we do most things have to be parent lead, so it is good exercise for you too. I have a few that can be done on their own or begin with me and then spontaneously become his own activity:

Hide and Go seek, Mums turn, Nello's turn. Then we take turns hiding his Clifford the big red dog around the house and go running around looking for him.

Jumping course- I use computer mouse pads-cheap ones from IKEA and put them down on the floor and jump form pad to pad.  Then we jump over things, like small plastic bowls or cushions.

Hopscotch-Use masking tape on the kitchen floor and put numbers in each box and practice jumping/hopping and saying the numbers.  I use a big flat rubber plug stopper from our sink and let him throw it on the numbers too.

Balloons-Keep up, kicking, chasing etc...

Beach balls and foam Frisbees-throwing and catching etc...

Bubbles-Gymboree bubbles are the best and great for indoors, not sticky or a mess and safe for furniture. Try to catch bubbles on various body parts, of course tummy and tongue are big hits.(they are non toxic and sweet to taste)  I give him plastic cups to try and catch the bubbles or a ladle or a spoon to catch them.

Building Forts-I let him pile couch cushions, pillows, towels etc...and make a fort, knock it down, go in it etc...

Animals-We pretend to be different animals and walk and make the sounds like them.

Follow the leader obstacle course (I'm the leader) Go all over the house up and down objects, crawling under tables etc...

Bed Sheet Tug of War-I let him win and I pretend to go flying forward and always fall down for a good laugh on the bed or something

Gymnastics- Wheelbarrow walks, handstands with feet on the couch and hands on the floor, somersaults etc..all with my help of course.

Stomach Wheel rides-We have a small wooden dolly (type for moving small furniture pieces) that he lays on his stomach and "swims" around the floor pumping with his arms and feet, kwim?

Towel or Blanket rides- I give him a short ride as he sits on a towel or blanket and then I leave him to do it with his stuffed animals all around the floor.

Bath-I let him go "swimming" in the bath and play. I take out his regular toys and bring in things like strainers, ladles, kitchen stuff to play with.

A friend of ours did this, Nello not really a fan, so never bothered.  She uses a small inflatable kiddy pool and fills it with those small, soft plastic balls and made a ball pit.

I thought of you today when ds was bouncing like a kangaroo on my mother's bed, at the end he was so out of breath and said 'Mummy, I'm pooped' :D. Maybe that could be a good one ;)

I also second the balloon idea - playing keepy-uppy and chasing each other around the house with it really gets you going

I stick animals, numbers ,letters e.t.c in one area of the house ( fridge ) and I stand the other end and Ryan has to run to the fridge and get whichever picture I ask for and run back and stick it on the radiator ,he will play this game for a long time ,it's great because aswell as tiring him out it's a speech therapy session too 'cos I encourage him to tell me the name e.t.c .
DS loves hide and seek too ;)

Hi ladies! I just saw this. I have a question and then a suggestion.

Question - What sort of trampoline do you use? Is it a regular mini one? How do you prevent the tot from falling off? Do you hold their hands while they jump? I think it's a great idea and will look into getting it when the budge permits. I'll look on eBay for a cheap one but, at the moment, we can't afford any extra luxuries. My ds's b-day is coming up and my mother wants me to buy him a gift from her but I know she wouldn't approve of the trampoline.  :P

Suggestion: Stickers. I used to collect stickers so I have a whole bunch that I really don't care about anymore so I give them a sheet each and let them stick them on my shirt, my pants, or on designated areas. If you make yourself a moving target, both you and the kids get some exercise (my kids like to run around the DR table).

I have found a great game for if I get to the end of the day and there is still time left and don't know what to do. I turn off all the lights and give my 3.5yr and 1.5yr girls flash lights and they run around the house like crazy! they love it.

wow there are some great ideas here!! No doubt I'll be using them millions of times over the long dark winter!!
We had one of the worst summers ever this year and being at home with a 2 year old a 3 year old and a baby, I nearly went off my head!! Wish I'd spotted this sooner....but we do a lot of dancing to burn off energy (and in my case a dose of calories!!). THe older 2 just run around the kitchen table to the music for the most part for some reason (who knows??!!) but lately have also been breakdancing (there's a blast from the past!!) as well. We also started to play musical statues but as they couldn'tstand still for a millisecond, we touch various body parts instead. Music stops, I say first person to touch nose is the winner - and we have to do a different body part each time or there's major cheating going on kwim?!!! That game stood me in good stead.
But thanks for all the other great ideas.......it's glorious today so we can go to the beach (seasons are turned upside down here this year!) but I get the strangest feeling we'll be in dire need of rainy day ideas soon...........:)

I am so glad I found this post because there are so many great ideas here.  I was wondering however, if anyone had any suggestions of places to go out of the house that are relatively inexpensive.  I live in Chicago and going to a shopping mall to get out of the house during the winter can be a very expensive thing when it comes to parking.  And the museums, which I thought used to have a weekly free day, are now expensive every day!  So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places to go with a child that are low cost or free?

Thanks!

We have a tunnel that folds up...like an acordian.  Lo's love it and it doesnt take up much space when folded, you can shove it under the couch.
We also have 2 bouncy balls...the ones with a handle.

I dont do winter very well...we go to different pet stores, the kiddies love to look at the animals.  We have a few museums around here and they can be quite expensive, the childrens museum is $70 for a family membership for a year which isnt bad.  Barnes and Noble has a free story time.  Also check out the library, they sometimes have free playgroups.

Some ideas that work for us:  Hullabaloo by Cranium (instructs you to jump to a triangle, crawl to a picture of a musical instrument etc.)  My younger son (19 months) can't really follow the directions but he has a blast jumping from spot to spot trying to follow his brother (age 3 1/2).  Another fun game for 3s and up in HyberDash.  We received them both as gifts and the kids really run around with them.

When my first son was younger, we'd play "Find all the balls in the house and throw them in this laundry basket, try to beat the timer, etc. "  He would even be happy to have a jumping contest, etc.  Anything I was willing to time.

My son is 7 years old.  For Xmas Santa brought Shane the rock band set.  So now his friends come over and have formed a rock band.  They each take turns.  Shane will sing which is good for his speech or play the guitar--and its really cute.  Or he will get on the Wii and interact with  his friends which are far away via head phone.  When we put it on speaker they can talk to each other and build up their house, balance a check book and learn life skill.

I have found the library a life-saver on horrible-weather days...Ben's still crawling so he loves going up and down the aisles, pulling books off the shelves and putting them back on (that's my bit unfortnately!) etc.  They've got a children's area with a couple of toys in it and it's ideal.  We live in a tiny flat so it's great to find somewhere free where he can burn off some energy when we can't get outside.

I started this thread back when DD was pretty young - good to see it's still going!

I was thinking about this today actually. DD (now 4.5) has been waking once most nights. Last night she literally ran in circles around our house for 10 minutes. Not sure if it's definitely related but she did sleep 11.5 hours last night without a peep LOL!

mini tramp - They are  not  very expensive at all.  You can take the legs off and slide it under something or behind  the sofa

blow up swimming pool filled with balls = ball pit

Hullaballo

Twister Hopscotch -  Kind of cheaply made, but it was a  gift

gym scooters  -  They ones you sit on and someone can pull you along

spoon and egg game  -  walk across the room with a spoon   and  hope your plastic egg doesn't fall  off.  We have  one  with a  bean b ag yolk inside, but you  can use the  plastic easter eggs

tunnels

tents

make a fort with sheets and pillows

parachute

Red Light Green Light game

Mother  May I? or Simon Says

We play parade  - use  flags and instruments

dress up

my lo like  to get out their  summer  hats and  try them on, look in the  mirror, giggle, get  out the  sun glasses, put those on, look i n the mirror, giggle.   This can go on for 20+ minutes.
will be  back with more

With our 10 mth old we are doing up the stairs, down the stairs.  He likes to climb now.  And doesn't seem to get that bored with it.  I also rotate the rooms and toys.  So we spend some time in the living area, some time in the office, some time in his room, some time in my room while I am getting ready.  Each place has different toys to play with.

MATTRESS!!!!!!!!! Bring your big or little (cot size) mattress(preferably inner spring) into the living area jump on it.  My kids like to jump off the couches and drive onto the mattress (extra energy exerted from climbing onto couch!).

Also, push two couches almost together and put a mattress over the top and drap blankets down to make doors.  My boys love this tunnel idea...they play for ages running walkers, prams etc through it!

The mattress idea is great! Might have to try that one.

We bring DS's bike inside. It's a Strider Sports bike (http://www.stridersports.com/) and doesn't have pedals that could mark up the walls. The kids do laps round and round the house. This thread reminded me that I need to bring it in for the winter!

Some things I've been doing with my 11 month old since he was about 7 months: (so hard to find ideas for babies!!!!) that won't cost much:

Well cooked and cooled long spaghetti to play with

A bowl on a towel and little jugs or his bath toys

A collection of toilet rolls and paper towel rolls to blow through and roll small balls down (supervised!)

Small jars with different things in them to shake

A large towel and a large bowl of uncooked rice and small cups to scoop it with

Emptying a bottom kitchen drawer and filling it with 'surprise' things such as a packet of pasta or my measuring spoons and wait for him to find it (only one not baby proofed!)

Putting sticks into the washing basket - he can poke them through the sides

Pegs and the indoor clothes horse - I cover the bottom rungs in pegs for him to pull off

Plain yoghurt on his high chair with tiny drops of food colouring dotted over - as he moves his hands through it colour appears and he can draw with it

A bowl of coloured water and little bowls of plain water (supervised!!!!)He gradually turns all the water bowls coloured (varying shades)

Cooked peas on a mirror on the floor

A box of metal objects and a box of wooden objects (found around the house!) to explore

Depends what your boundaries are ;-)

I have a very spirited (and touchy!) toddler and she NEEDS lots of physical activity to burn off energy and release stress or she's just unhappy and doesn't sleep well!

We do climbing - LO loves climbing up on the sofa then I help her "jump" off.  We play hide and seek, monster/chasing games, she gets in her Little Tykes car and "drives" while I push her around our house (okay we live in a tiny 2 bedroom house but still have fun up and down the hallway and round the rug in the living room).  We also do dancing and twirling and stomping.

When she is a bit older we will bring the duvet through to the living room and make an island etc. or put it between the sofas to make a den.

Even when it's cold outside we always go out too!  We live on the coast in Scotland but even if it's below freezing we just wrap up toasty warm and LO can run around the park etc.

I think we might get a trampoline for indoors too.

We also do lots of climbing, big cushion, duvet and bean bag mountains to climb up onto or to run at and throw himself onto.
Other things
- 'we are a toddler band' marching through the house singing and playing instruments (DS tends to run so gets more exercise), we finish each verse at the music box and swap instruments so the next verse is different.
- As above but 'grand old duke of York' and get our knees up as high as possible whilst marching.
- catch tig, running from living room to kitchen, often a bit of rough housing involved with the tig too.
- carrying bottles of mineral water from the kitchen to the living room and putting in a designated 'area', then carrying them back (toddlers love to carry and test their strength!)
- walking (or running) the line.  I put a long masking tape line on the floor from the living room through the hall into the kitchen and made it into a big spiral on the kitchen floor.
- long distance shape sorting.  I marked out several big shapes of masking tape on the kitchen floor.  In the living room I provided a big box of plastic cookie cutters of various shapes.  DS has to run to the living room to find the shape I've called out then run back and place it in the correct corresponding area.  Then call out another shape and so on.  This can also be done for colour sorting, stick down A4 or bigger pieces of coloured paper to mark out the areas then provide the same cookie cutters or other toys for placing.  The idea is to put the box at a distance from the sorting area so there is lots of to and fro.
-balancing. DS climbs up on my knees and balances, it's a reasonably calm activity but takes a lot of energy (and here results in some rolling around and rough housing too which is always good to tire him out).

I marked out several big shapes of masking tape on the kitchen floor.
We are also using these shapes to do 'run to square, run to diamond' etc and have to get there as fast as possible and also 'jump to rectangle...' etc depending on LOs developmental level. DS is only just learning to jump but still enjoys trying to jump from one shape to another.  Could be bunny hops, frog jumps or hopping from one shape to another for older LOs.

- a square of fabric pinned onto arm-sleeves to make a super hero cape and race one another around the house pretending to fly.

Another indoor activity from me

We did a great activity whilst DS was poorly (well he was contagious so i kept him home but not all that poorly so was in need of exercise) and will be playing this again with some additional parts through the winter months.

Human sized board game
I made a set of 12 numbered cards with 1-6 having also a square drawn on and marked with dots like dice.  Each card had a sticker as a clue what the instruction was plus an instruction, eg a frog, and "do 10 frog jumps and make the sound of a frog"; a dog "crawl on all fours, wag your tail and bark like a dog"; jump around like a monkey; fly like a butterfly; do 5 star jumps and sing a song about a star etc. Then set the cards out in a trail from the kitchen to the living room, as an assault course climbing over chairs etc. I used a little masking tape to keep the cards in place whilst we played.  We took turns to roll the dice, and take our move physically (jumping through the numbers up to the number on the dice), DS had to do all the instructions no matter whose turn it was!
We played both with 1 dice and with 2 and for this session we began at zero for each turn rather than counting on and trying to get to a 'finish' so there was no competition,  no winner or loser, no one had to stand on a card to mark their place and it was easier to focus on the physical activity.  For older kids a longer course with more cards and a start and finish might be worth including.
