Title: We're trying soy........
Post by: appletree on December 30, 2007, 19:58:26 pm
Well, Bella won't be going home with biomom anytime soon so we're trying soy again today. Started this a.m. and she's drank about 12 oz so far today and no problems. The big indicator will be tonite as that's when we've had all our problems before. Fingers crossed.  :-\

I hope it goes well. I am also glad you have the time to trial soy without it being rushed.

Kelly.

Good luck - will be thinking of you

But do you still do soy then?

She actually slept better last night than she has in a longtime but there could be other factors effecting that, too. We only got a small thing of soy milk and I didn't bring it to school. So now she's on the rice milk. I feel awful about it - do you think it's going to effect her that badly?  I just didn't think it through real well.

So, do your children get constipated or what happens and how do you fix it?

I'm sorry I always say that to the BW mums who try soy but I don't think it's a good idea. It's even more of an allergen than dairy is and soy formula is not recommended in Germany, I think it may even be banned.

If she shows no signs of being allergic to it, fine, but many babies react fine and after a few weeks develop an allergy towards soy, too :(

Well, that just sucks. She was on soy formula (apparently they think it's ok here) but then didn't do well when we switched to milk off the formula.  Rice milk really isn't all that nutritious so what else would you suggest if not soy? Reactions to goat's milk, lactose free, and regular milk.  :P  She does have bad exzema on arms and legs most of the time anyway, so...........  uuggh.

How does she react to Neocate, Alimentum or Nutramigen?

There are ways to make rice milk more nutritious. Some other moms have added a concotion of coconut milk (for fat) and protein powder to it, some also add in Nesquick to make it taste better.

Steffi - I have no idea how she reacts to those as I've never even heard of them (haha).

She's not underweight and likes protein to eat so I'm not sure I'd need to add anything. I'm going to WIC for the boys on Thursday so I'm going to talk to them then and if they're not sure, I'll call the Dr. - oh, which I may do anyhow as I just remembered Bella gets her 2nd flu shot on Friday.

So, ya think I should just stick with rice til then? Maybe I could try some regular yogurt as she loved that but had to be removed due to the dairy intolerance. Can you re-introduce things like this?

TBH if she drinks the rice milk well and eats protein and other fats I'd stick with the rice milk. You could always try regular yogurt but I'd be careful with her history of dairy intolerance.

The formulas I suggested are hypoallergenic. Depending on her insurance you get them on prescription. If you can't get them, I would stick to rice milk, honestly.

Hugs and Happy New Year  ;D

tbh i would stick with the rice milk too wendee.just buy the calcium enriched one.
india still is milk and soy free but has her special formula.dietician recommends 16oz per day.

Ok, ladies............we are no longer trying soy.  :P Bella screamed all afternoon- her tummy was hard and rigid and she was crying "owie, owie" over and over. Now I feel awful. No more soy ever! We get the organic enriched kind or rice milk already so will just continue with that. Not going to try yogurt for awhile either. Poor girl. To think that was my fault.  :'( :'( :'(

Happy New Year!!!!

Sorry Wendee :( It's not your fault, it's sounds so healthy, doesn't it, soy I mean but it really isn't recommended as an alternative formula for dairy intolerant kids.

Try and ask your doctor for hypoallergenic formula or buy the calcium enriched rice milk.

HUGS and Happy New Year!!!

I am so sorry she reacted that way. At least you have trialed it before she is due to go back to biomom.

I'm sorry too to hear of Bella's reaction. The worse thing is you feel so helpless. I hope she's feeling better now.
Big, big kisses to you all from us

She's much better today. Thank God. I felt awful yesterday! It's rice milk for us from now on. Do children who are dairy intolerant ever get to the point where they can do dairy without problems?

P.S. Kelly, biomom may not be getting Bella back.  :)

So Bella may get to stay with you for good? Yahoo for you and her!!!

Glad to hear she's doing better today. As for your question, some kids outgrow dairy intolerances but others don't. I can't remember - how old is she?

biomom messed up bigtime so we'll see..........

She's 16 1/2 mos. old.

Wow , does that mean you may get to adopt her? That would be the best 2008! Fingers crossed!
Glad to hear she's feeling better so quickly.
After giving Nicholas the cortizone tablets Monday evening after the visit to the Drs AND collecting up all the toys he got for his birthday (23.12.05) and for Christmas the rash has hardly come back at all ;D.
Is this a coincidence or was one of the toys to blame?
When you have your allergies are they sudden (within hours)? Nicholas's was over 2 days :-X xx

If she reacted this way at 16.5 months, I wouldn't try dairy or soy again until 2 years old probably...

Lis - posted on your other thread. From what i've heard/read, contact allergies usually go away much quicker than food allergies as with the food or medicine it's the allergen getting into the entire system/bloodstream.

I feel it would be in Bella's best interest if biomom does not get her back so that is great. I hope that is the case. Will you be able to adopt Bella?

Kelly

We'd love to adopt Bella but won't know anything about what the plan is until the 14th when we have our MDT meeting.

Lis, my reactions would vary. Sometimes they'd stay in my system for 2-4 days, and sometimes it'd be out within a few hours. It would depend on the severity and the allergen and the time of month it was (this is a biggee for me believe it or not). When I had hives (and ds1 is like this too) it would come and go for 2-3 days.

No soy ever. Dairy maybe again at 2yo.  :P

Thanks for the help ladies.  :-*
