My pediatrician suggested I try rice milk (off dairy and soy for DS). I looked at it at the grocery and saw there was a plain and a vanilla. I wondered which one anyone that drinks rice milk drinks? I'm kind of scared to try it but hopefully someone has some good things to say about it! Thanks.

DS had severe reflux and couldn't tolerate cow's milk but loved rice milk , we had no problems with rice milk (plain) it just makes washin the bottles a bit harder because it does stick to the sides .You can get one with added calcium
-
the caramel one is nice too!

Have you tried goats milk at all? I've been told that has more nutrition than rice milk......I would go with plain rice milk for a LO though
-
Is the rice milk for you or ds? W your post I assumed it was for you but then I read the replies and now unsure. The only thing I would say about goats milk is that the protein is very similar to that found in cow's milk which is why a lot of people still react to it. However some people drink it with great success. If it is for yourself and you eat a balanced diet I can't see the rice milk being an issue, it is just a matter of getting used to the taste really. If it is for your ds then it depends what age he is.

Hi!
saw this and had to reply. My daughter is dairy/soy intolerant. Worked it out when she was 4/5 mo old and i was still breastfeeding so had to switch to rice milk. We use Rice Dream with added calcium and its great, tastes quite sweet and may take a little getting used to but now i prefer it to normal milk and still have it in my cereal nearly 9 months after stopping bf'ing! My daughter has it with her cereal and has an 8oz bottle before bed and she loves it.
hth!

I am drinking the plain now. I like it. I tasted the vanilla but had a bit of an allergic rash with it. DS likes the Vanilla best as he is MPI and I am drinking the plain while BFing DD. it is a bit bland at first, but I love it now. good luck and don't be scared, it is worthit if it works for you.

Sorry I forgot to write that I am the one off dairy because I'm bf ds. I broke down and got the vanilla and it tastes like rice! I'm sure it's just because I know it's rice milk that that's what I taste. I'm going to give it another shot before I get rid of it. I'm not sure it's really worth me drinking it because it doesn't have the amount of protein cow's milk has. A lot of times I would drink a glass of milk when I didn't have time to eat something and that would hold me over until I could make something to eat. But I don't think I can gulp down a glass of rice milk like I can regular milk! Maybe it will grow on me?

Just to add more choices for you (not sure if you want more choices?).....
Our boy loves Almond Milk (made from almonds). And you can buy Hemp Milk too (made from hemp seeds) at our grocery store too.
All the best...

As an adult I have tried it due to lactose intolerence. I don't drink it all the time, but definately have had my share.

You are right, rice milk has no protein or fat in it. You bascially would be drinking it for the calcium and the added vitamins in it.
Could you do orange juice? They make some that has extra calcium added to it.
Do you need the rice milk for the calcium mainly? You proably are getting all the other vitamins from the foods you eat.
You could also ask your doctor for a calcium supplement.

we use rice milk occasionally - the taste is good, but we mostly use almond milk. just about every day in cereal. i find the rice milk is best in hot drinks - chocolate, tea, etc. soy and almond milk curdle. any are a good sustitute for milk in baking. some of the brands that we get here are fortefied with extra nutrients, but almonds naturally are high in calcium. you cab experiment with different brans, i found some of the rice and soy had a texture or after tatse that i didn't like.

Yes I am taking calcium supplements. I mentioned how I really like to drink milk so our ped. suggested I try rice milk. I think I'll probably have to do with out any milk though; I don't know that I can get used to the taste of the rice. I haven't seen almond milk here. I'll have to check next time I go to whole foods. Thanks for all your help.

btw, almond milk is sold in a box, the brand we have is called "almond breeze" it is not refridgerated
-
Thank you for letting me know it's in a box. I was thinking I'd never seem it by the rice and soy milk but just figured I'd missed it. What part of the store is it in and do you have to get it at a health food store or just the regular grocery?
-
I'm allergic to almonds so no almond milk here, but we (all of us except Josie, who can't seem to get used to the powdery texture compared to real cows' milk) drink rice milk like it's going out of style. Trader Joe's has their own brand that is unsweetened in vanilla flavor, unlike most other vanilla ones I've seen.
We also add rice protein powder to it for Nat that we get at Whole Foods. It happens to be vegan (so we can share it with our dairy-allergic friend's DD), although that's not why we use it. I like it 'cause in addition to the protein that's in it, it's also loaded with dried greens! (And Nat doesn't know or taste it, nanny nanny boo boo! ;D) The protein powder we use comes in chocolate and vanilla and is sweetened with stevia so it's sugar-free..

No problem. We get it at our regular grocery store. Kept near the health foods. They also carry it at health foods stores like whole foods market.

all our local grocery stores have almond milk. it is by the powdered and condenced milk.

Hi. I think the almond milk is delicious. My son Thomas is MSPI and he really likes the vanilla almond dream. It bakes up really well in recipies too (rice milk is more watery). He will drink the hazlenut vanilla rice dream too. I think for adults, the almond milk is a more typical texture for milk like skim. The rice milk is too watery for me to get past, but the taste is really not too bad. In our Kroger, all of these are in the health foods section and we live in West Virginia where people are not too healthy. So if we have it, everyone else should too.
