Title: What are your 2 year olds favorite toys?
Post by: em_here on September 22, 2008, 11:36:23 am
Abbi is 2 in January  :o :o :o :o :o

We dont have a lot of toys now :( Most are old and broken. What do your 2 year olds like? I saw Nic did a thread for her nearly 1 year old, so thought Id start one of my own as need ideas too but abbi's older. Abbi never seems to play much with stuff and I think its cause all the stuff doesnt occupy for very long at all

What works with your lo toy wise, that keeps their interest for ages?

Thanks :)

she also has a sandpit in the garden and adores this but I guess the best of the weather for that is already past.

hi Emma,
looks like your lo and mine are about the same age! anya loves her toy pram. she runs it upside down all over, mostly  ::)

books keep her occupied for a while. she has a talking bruin bear, which she keeps perpetually babbling/listening to.

we bought a mr.potato head for her today, lets see how it goes !

she doesnt do much with her blocks, though, so need to clear those off.

am also wondering what toys we can get for her, as we need to clear out the old and make way for new, age-appropriate ones.

i am guessing she should be looking at some numbers and alphabets now, so need to get those in :)

Leorah is also coming up to 2 and I took most of her toys away as she only used them to make a mess but for her birthday she is getting (not being given all at once!) a bike, Fairy Toadstool Cottage with little figures (ELC), Magnetic Learning Centre with numbers and alphabet (probably give her this nearer to 2½), an easel, playfood and a tea set and I will reintroduce her kitchen. Other stuff we have requested are play dough, washable pens, crayons, chalk and books.

I just bought her a Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Piggy Bank, she LOVES it! It has 10 coins and it counts to 10, sings and teaches colours and helps with that urge to put things into little gaps and holes  :D

Charlie will only be 2 in December, but he loves wooden puzzles.  He likes magnets too.  He has a farm set and a Thomas the Tank engine set.  And of course his favorite toys are anything he can steal from his big brother.   ;)

those woodern puzzels are super expensive, here is what i have done when dd1 and dd2 mastered them, mixed two together, and then when she mastered this, mixed three together, then four, worked for us

Well when my DD was two she loved drawing on anything even the walls so she only had crayons and wax crayons to draw with as they can be washed off the wall. She also loved playing with her babies, pram and toy food and still does love playing with these. But her most played with toy collection is her care bears and she nows shares them with her baby brother Edward as he enjoys playing with them too but I think it is just the bright colours he likes. Wooden puzzles used to keep her sat in one place for a long time and books are her carmer when she is feeling frustrated and angry. I think my best buy for her when she was 2 was here box of toy food fruit and veg as she was a fussy eater and she could explore food with these. ELC have some fabulas toy food sets or there is the new country cottage thing not sure if that is the name but they do toy food whih is soft and made of fabric instead of plastic but I think the plastic ones are easier to clean. Lots of ideas and a birthday in January I know how hard it is to buy for them as it is my DH's birthday only 3 weeks after christmas and I always buy he presents off the children for both christmas and birthday.

I just bought her a Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Piggy Bank, she LOVES it! It has 10 coins and it counts to 10, sings and teaches colours and helps with that urge to put things into little gaps and holes  :D

We do have this, I LOVE the song "Im a piggy bank, I have a piggy snout, you can put coins in my slot and you can take them out" and so on LOL, makes me giggle!

Great ideas ladies!

I saw a winnie the pooh treehouse set with little winnie the pooh figures etc, would love to get her one, says 3 + but I would of course supervise her!  Is it worth it? Kind of like a dolls house set up?  Would love to think shed love that!

Also, she has become attached to a dolly the last few days, we have a dolls pram, maybe I should get her some bits like a little dolls cot etc. Argos do an 18piece set for 30 pounds, maybe for xmas? Has a bouncy chair, cot, changing mat etc etc

Thanks for all the great ideas, magnets sound great. I LOVED care bares, "care bares prepare to starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre" was my childhood catchphrase. Sylvanian families? Anyone had these?  Do they hold interest

She seems a proper girlie girl bless her :)

Might get some magnets too :) and I like the idea of the farm set too!

Ohhhhhhhhh I could go on and on lol!

Toys are soooooooooo expensive, so will go to car boot sales and ebay for the most part for toys, and clean them etc........

Thanks ladies, you are all fab!

He's a boy, but my 2-year-old loves his little Tykes transporter, as does the 4-year-ols and Sophie (barely 1). And it's indestructible, very important in our house. Also balls, all sizes. Lego, blocks, jigsaws.

Hi,

For those interested in Alphabet stuff, we have the leap frog alphabet magnet set - you put each letter magnet inside this larger magnet and it plays the name of the letter and the sound or sounds it makes, and it also plays the ABC song too - my almost 2 year old has loved it for about 4 months now, and it helps entertain her while I work in the kitchen.

She's really into imaginative play, so she enjoys the Little People sets by Fisher Price.  We have the barn, and she LOVES it!  We got her the "my first dollhouse" from Fisher Price as well, so we expect that to be a hit for her birthday.  We also have the bus and airplane from the same product line, and she likes those too, but not as much as the bigger toys like the barn.

This is a fun thread, so I'm glad to have marked my spot!  I'll add more as I continue shopping for both her birthday and Christmas gifts...

Fisher Price is great, masyn has not only the newer version of the playhouse, but my parents saved the ones I had when I was little and she loves to make-believe with them. Dolls are also a big ticket item as I have a 3 month old and masyn loves to look after her babies too - even change poopy diapers!  The best thing that keeps her occupied though is the puzzles, we have a huge floor one which has a different puzzle on each side to challenge her a little more.

Leorah has actually turned 2 now and developmentally she has changed so much in such a short space of time! Her imagination is amazing and she will make up games and chat away by herself for ages so I definitely recommend Little People vehichles, houses etc, playdoh and also duplo/lego. She loves her blackboard and as the chalk is easy to wash off everywhere else so that is fine but apart from that drawing wise I recommend aquadraw as even though she knows the rule with crayons/pens "paper, paper!" she cannot resist having a scribble everywhere else!

Hi,

My daughter turns 2 in February and currently prefers playing with her dolls, pram, ironing bord/iron/clothes line/laundry basket, read books, colouring, stickers.

I am thinking of getting her a kitchen for her birthday. Do you have any recommendations? I prefer wood over plastic but they are hard to find at an affordable price. (I´m in Belgium) I have been contemplating buying one from Ebay, lots of German wooden kitchens there for around 80 Euro.
Any thoughts?

Sophie

Sophie do you have BRIO in The Netherlands, we do here in Denmark and we got a nice little wooden kitchen stove for about £25, she alo had metal pans from Ikea and lots of plastic food and loves it all and plays with it most days. I still recommend Little People and animal figures and cars , Leorah likes to play with things her way and doesn't like toys that you can only play with one way.

Hi Skatty!

I´m in Belgium but will look for the BRIO brand around here, the price seems good  :)

How are you liking Denmark? My husband is Danish and moved to Belgium after we met.

I am going to join the bilingual thread as I have a few worries about Lena´s English. Maybe I will see you there!

Hi Sophie, I am slowly getting used to the realisation that I now live in Denmark after over 4 years lol!! It is actually very different from the UK! Definitely come over to the bilingual thread, I have had and still have many worries about Leorah's speech but there I always find the support and reassurance I need  :)

I have a 2yr old girl and here are her favorites:

Melissa & Doug Toys.. especially the fake foods where she can "cut" things - liek sandwiches, the birthday cake, etc.., wooden puzzles and recently a clock puzzle that has her match the shapes and she can line up the numbers, etc.

Painting/Play Dough/Coloring

Pretend cleaning - I give her a clean sponge and bought her a child-size broom.. she loves to "help"
me during the day while I clean up around the house

Little People toys

My 2 yr old is a boy but he loves any kind of ball, legos and blocks and of course cars.  He still is not very into crayons, I think its because he doesn't hold them quite right and has difficulty making dark enough lines, but he loves his aquadoodle which seems easier for him to work.  Also likes his little people farm and town.  I recommend getting a few more traditionally "boyish" toys, my neices love cars and blocks, and my ds has 2 "babies" he likes to play with.

Vacuums, any and all. Must be a family thing because my nephew has always like them too. I bought my LO a real one today (it basically a small dust buster with a handle and bottom attachment) If he's going to push the thing all over my house, may as well get some work out of him right?  (I watch him like a hawk and the brush attachment has a guard on it)

He's also into trains, trucks and cars. He loves his grocery cart (super cheap buy but worth every penny and more) and anything else that looks like something Mommy uses.

my 2yo DS loves his new Green Toys recycling truck..the back opens up and he sticks, balls, hotwheels, etc inside. Viking Toys also makes these little cars called Chubbies that have white wheels (ie. no black marks on your floors) that he loves -- they are fairly cheap and he has several of them. he also loves musical instruments right now. we have a Plan Toys xylophone and a mandolin that he plays with and also a little Fisher Price recorder that he loves.

GREAT THREAD.
My lo Finn loves cars of any kind his pram, his handy manny toolbox that sings, his aqua doodle mat, books of any kind but loves the MR MEN ones, they seem to be the right size for his wee hands! his is just getting into his sit on toys now. we bought a mini tub set of playdough for his birthday and he is learning his colours from that, also loves to stack them and count how many he can pile up high.
Santa just bought him a kitchen and he loves it. Very easy to overwhelm them so we use rotation quite a bit. in the morning we have cars and blocks etc. n the afternoon its things that I can do with him.

Happy land/little people are always good

Re-reading this thread, I thought people have posted here some more ideas... it's so nice that your DD loves "Pretend cleaning| play, @LMcKinney! I wish I have been like that at her age!
And it's super cute that NoonieP's LO loves vacuuming play!
