Title: *Updated* offer dairy to an 11 mth who may have had a "possible" dairy reaction
Post by: Doj on November 21, 2008, 19:06:51 pm
My 11 mth old has been on soy formula since 1 mth.
It all started when at 2 weeks old I stopped nursing and put her on a milk based formula and she cried hysterically every waking minute.
When I took her to the DR at 1 mth she said try soy and within 3 days of the new formula the crying reduced significantly.
She was also diagnosed with severe reflux(testing was done) at 2 mths and I know that milk and reflux do not work well together.

Now that dd is 11 mths old I have been giving her dairy free soy yogurt and cheese as I was worried that she might have a reaction to dairy so I didn't want to offer it to her.
When can I introduce dairy to her? What should I start with, cheese or yogurt?

All you can do is try and see how she does.  Has she had foods with dairy in it?  I know some baby foods have dairy, breads, etc.

I know with my DS1 at that age, even the baby foods with dairy in the ingredients made him cry all night long.

I think I would start with maybe something like Mac and Cheese or a few bites of yogurt.

It is very likely she has outgrown it and you will be okay.

Keep us posted.

Does it matter if I wait till she is one? or is now an ok time to try?

What are you wanting to try?  I would not do whole cow's milk yet, but maybe try cheese or yogurt.

I would probably start with yogurt and take it very slowly.

I am thinking of whole milk yogurt, just a couple of spoons.
She is heading to daycare in 1 mth so I wanted to see if this is still an issue so if it is the daycare workers are fully aware of it.
If she is ok on yogurt, should I then move to cheese and then say whole milk?

I think that is a great plan.  You may notice within a few hours if she gets gassy, etc. or it may take a few days if she has a delayed reaction.

I would try the whole milk yogurt for 3/4 days, slowly increasing the amount you give her.  If no reaction, then try cheese and then onto whole milk.

I hope it goes well.  I dream of the day I can feed Tyler like a normal kid.

Hi

Gave dd cheese and yogurt and she seems fine. No gassiness or fussiness, however she is pooping more (3 x per day as oppose to 1 time
Is that something that I should be concerned with?
I would like to introduce whole milk now to her, just wondering how I should go about this?
She is still on soy formula as I didn't want to switch her to a new formula is I am able to take her off soon and switch to milk.
Should I add an ounce of milk to her bottle along with her formula and then gradually increase it the oz per bottle?

Thanks again

I would only be concerned about the pooping if the consistency of the poops were abnormal, such as runny, mucousy, etc.  If not then I wouldn't be concerned at all.

With the introduction of milk the way you suggested is the way I would do it to, and I am doing currently. :)

I agree with Melanie (Spectra).  I would not worry with the number of poops unless just really bad.

I would deft. try whole milk 1 oz. at a time.  This will get her body used to whole milk as well as the new taste of milk.  It took my son about 1 week to fully accept milk.
