Title: Sippy Cup Refusal
Post by: Lulu m on November 29, 2008, 16:38:46 pm
Hi all. My DD is 12.5 mos old and will not take a sippy cup for her milk. She'll drink a little water out of it, and juice, but not her milk. And I mean, no way, no how - we're talking melt down mode.
I have tried Playex, Nuby, Born Free and another brand that uses a straw. Any ideas? I'd don't know what else to do - I am sick of spending money on cups that go to waste, and do not want her to have a melt down every time she drinks milk.
She is down to 3 servings a day (6-8 oz each time).
I'd love some advice!

Thanks!

I waited until my daughter was 18 months.  Up until then she would only take 1-2 ounces and that's it.  Finally a friend advised me on a different way and I did it.  Basically went "cold turkey".  By this time she was eating lots of solids, so one Saturday I said no more bottles, only sippy cups.  Of course she through a fit, wouldn't drink more than a couple of ounces for most of the day.  Then the next day she drank completely out of the sippy cup, full 8 oz, and never went back to bottles.  But, like I said, my daughter was older and it worked like a charm, not sure if that will work on a smaller baby.  I have a 15 month old son, and he won't even drink a sip out of a sippy cup.  I know I could not do the cold turkey thing with him right now, but I am going to definitely try it again when he is a bit older.

Thanks to both of you!

I will try the disposable cups and see if that helps. right now I am also going to try and give her a few sips of milk at each meal to see if she'll get used to it. I am using a different sippy cup for water and juice as well to see if that will make a difference. I feel so rushed. But she is only 12.5 mos. I guess I am just needing some transition advice.  I don't need to go cold turkey - yet!

Hi again. Still having the same problem - DD will drink out of her sippy cup - just not her milk. I guess it is not a big deal just yet - she is not quite 13 mos old.
I have been working on her getting more used to her sippy cup - and it has worked. She loves it. She tosses it, poors water over her head, teeths on it, and drinks and drinks out of it! She loves water.
NOW she drinks too much too fast and ends up projectile vomiting all the water. ARGH. I finally got a sippy she likes, but there is no way I would want to try to get her to take milk from it - maybe she is not ready? She needs to learn how to drink better out of it first?

I also notice she has a hard time if there is too much liquid in it - too heavy to tilt up, and if there is too little - she does not know to tilt the cup waaayyyy up to get the water.

Any advice?

Been there too!
My ds is 19 months and still wont drink milk from a sippy cup! He can drink water, juice, soda but not milk.
I don't make a big dealout of it, I know someday he will drop that last bottle. (he only has a bottle at bedtime) I guess he associates milk in a bottle with sleeping, and I sure don't want him falling asleep at odd hours.
Let us know what you decide!

what worked for us was a straw cup. DS loves it. We got Nuby ones with silicone straws and its a god send. We went cold turkey at about 16/17 months with the straw cup and we almost did not ahve to go cold turkey he just loved it sooo much.

OK, we've used Nuby, but not the ones with the straw. I have not seen those. I'll have to check it out. TX!

Hi, my 10mo ds just doesnt seem to be able to use a sippy cup. He very very occasionally puts it in his mouth but he doesnt understand that he has to tip it up to be able to drink. Has anyone got any tips? Am i expecting too much for his age?
And also can som eone tell me the brand of these straw cups and where i might be able to get one from?

Thanks

DD is 16 months and will only drink a little milk out of a sippy at daycare (peer pressure), at home she flatly refuses.  It's been this way since we intro'd milk at 1 year (which took 3 months for her to be drinking full time instead of formula).  Our plan is to just wait it out for another few months and then go cold turkey in getting rid of the bottles, so maybe we'll try around 18 months.

We've used a number of different sippies and straw sippies - Nuby, Playtex, Munchkin - but she'll only take water and occassionally juice from them.  It's frustrating but I figure better to pick my battles.
