Title: Not sure if we are dealing with milk intolerance, but...
Post by: happy hollow on December 08, 2008, 15:03:01 pm
My ds has been a terrible sleeper from day one.  He will be one in a few weeks and what I want this Christmas is to be able to get some sleep!!!  We switched to formula when he was 7 months old as my milk dried up.  We went straight to Similac which was what he had in the hospital.  I had hoped it would help with his sleeping, but no dice!  A week ago, I started switching him to whole milk as we are going away for Christmas and I had hoped to have him switched by then.  He started having tummy troubles, so I went off right away.  He has had a diaper rash for a while, but it is mostly healed up (he had the flu and was having lots of BM).  He is COMPLETELY happy all day long, but still gassy.  He eats really well, so I attributed the gas to all of the new foods he has been eating.  Before bed, I have been giving him really bland foods, but he still wakes writhing around in his crib.  Do you think it could be a very slight milk intolerance.  I will make an appt to see Dr., but it takes forever to get in, and I would really like to figure this out!

Hi there.  Does he have any rash's or any other symptoms other than not sleeping and being gassy?

He could have a problem with just the lactose in the milk.  I am not sure where you are, but here you can get Lactaid Whole Milk.  It actually has the enzyme lactase in it, which people with lactose intolerance do not have.

Waking up could be from the gas pains and also partly habit now.

I think I would try Lactose Free Whole Milk OR If you can't get that, I would try Lactose Free Milk.

If that does not resolve the problems, then I would look at other alternatives to milk.

Sounds like to me though, he is just having a problem with the lactose.  Also a good Probiotic would be a great thing to give him since he just got over the flu.  It would help restore the good bacteria in his gut.

Hope this helps, Wendy

He has had a rash on his bum, and sometimes his cheeks seem a little red, but I have been attributing that to the cold, dry weather!!  I am from SK, Canada, and don't know about the lactaid whole milk, I know we get lactaid milk as my friend has a lactose intolerance.  I am from a smaller community so not sure.  Just wasn't sure what I should be trying, am nervous about soy milk.  Will check at the store!  Thanks for the advice...you're way faster than my doctor!!!

LOL about the doctor, tell me about it.

The rash could still be from the flu he had.

It could be a slight milk intolerance, but I would hate to see you rule out milk if you did not need to, you know.

I know there are some other's mom's on here from Canada, SPECTRA - Melanie, where are you???  She would know if there was lactaid available.

I say it is worth a try before ruling out milk and going to soy or rice milk.

Hi!!  I was actually born in SK!  If you go to your local drugstore or grocery store you can check out the Enfamil.  They do carry a milk based lactose free formula.  http://enfamil.ca/en/products/formulas_5.html  Or you can ask the pharmacist, every province is different in what they carry.

Sounds like milk or lactose to me.  Charlie was the same way and as soon as I switched him to soy milk, his bad bum went away and he started sleeping through the night.  It was instant!  Just give it a try for a few days...and don't forget the milk in most cookies, waffles, butter-based stuff, etc.
I did try the Lactaid with Charlie but he had same reaction to it (wicked diaper rash, not sleeping, fussy)so we went off of it.  My ped. recommended a soy based Next Step (Lipil) formula since soy milk did not have enough "stuff" like whole milk does.  Sorry...too late to get technical and actually think.   ;D

Hope you find some sleep in the new year!

Sorry, I was quick to reply and didn't get to finish what I meant to say.  My son woke up screaming.. Anyway I never tried a lactose free formula, well I did try soy from Similac which is lactose free, but when that didn't make a difference I didn't try anything else.  I'm not sure what else is out there for you to try that is lactose free.  I know here we have lots of different kinds of Enfamil, not sure what you have there.  I would ask the pharmacist as they should be able to tell you what formulas would be lactose and soy free.

Thank you so much for your replies!  Right now he is on the Good Start formula that is easier to digest.  Had a pretty good night last night, woke at 3:30, I gave him a bottle and he slept till 7!!!  He seems to still need a feed in the night, sometimes I can hold him off until 5am to give him his bottle, but lately I have been giving in a little earlier (the result of being sooooo tired!).  We do have some formula that is made from soy, but I didn't want to jump right to that, as I am not ready to give up on milk yet.  He had been on a milk based formula for 4 months, before he ever got a rash.  We had had no problems with rashes until he got this flu.
Spectra...where were you born?

I was born in Saskatoon!  Lived there until I was 5 and then moved to NS, and now currently in NB.  My dad is from Regina.  Whereabouts are you?

We are up North in Meadow Lake, but I am originally from Star City, a small town near Melfort.  I lived in Saskatoon from University until 3 1/2 years ago when I got married and moved up here!

Good Start is a good formula.  It still has lactose and milk proteins in it, but the milk proteins are 100% whey, which is supposed to be easier to digest.

Do you give him a full bottle before bed?  How about trying a bedtime snack also.

It could all be habit also.  You could try slowly decreasing the amount you give him everynight.  For example:

Night 1:  Give normal size bottle - Example 8 oz.
Night 2: Give only 7 oz.
If he only drink 6 oz. of that or 5 oz, etc.  Then start Night 3 with that amount.

Or you could try to water it down  more.  How much is he drinking during the day?

He may just be waking up during his light sleep and depends on the comfort of mommy and the bottle to put himself back to sleep.

Yeah, I do think that is possible.  I never used to feed him at night, but then he was relying on me doing the shh/pat thing for ages to get him back to sleep.  In the last while, he has seemed very uncomfortable, pushing his bum up in the air and squirming around.  I have tried just using water, but he truly seems hungry.  He is still pretty small, only 20 lbs and will be a year old on Dec. 27, so it is possible his little tummy wants more food during the night.  I should start him on nighttime snack.  What is a good one for him that wouldn't cause gassiness?

That does not seem small to me.  Tyler was 20 pounds at 1 yrs old.

Can he have oatmeal?   That is something solid and will stick with him.  You could add a little bit of fruit on top to get him to eat it or cinnamon.

I wish Tyler could eat oatmeal, because I would be doing that.

Have you looked at any of the lactose free formula's?  You don't have to be in a rush to switch him to whole milk because he is 1.  I know everyone does, me included, but I learned my lesson and wish I would have just stuck with formula for as long as possible.

Let me know about the oatmeal, if he can't have that I will think of something else.  You would just want to avoid, cheese/icecream, yogurt, anything with lots of sugar.

He's a big fan of oatmeal!  Why do you wish you had stayed with formula instead of switching?  Sorry, am new to the food allergy section and don't know your story.  The only reason I was attempting the switch was that we are going away for Christmas and I thought it would be lovely not to have to make bottles.  Money is also tight, and formula is so expensive, but I can do without other things!

Well with DS1, he was such a picky eater and was doing so well on his formula.  He was on Nutramigen though, hypoallergenic formula.  When we did the gradual switch, things just got messed up.

Now with DS2, we tried to do the switch and it did not go well, then tried to put him back on formula and he was not drinking much, so went to Rice Milk.

I just say I wished we had stayed with formula, because  you know they are getting the vitamins and nutrients they did.

In your case though, he is eating well and has been on a milk based formula, so it could be fine when you do make the switch.

What have you decieded to do?  Are you going to try a lactose free formula, soy formula, soy milk, lactose free milk?  When do you leave for vacation?

Not sure...ds woke with a tummy ache today.  No fever or anything, but he is lethargic (back asleep already!!) and really just not himself.  Not sure if it is because I switched formulas, or if he has caught another bug.  In true Sammy style,  you can still get him to laugh!!  DH might take him into the clinic just to see where we should go from here.  I have my daycare kids today, so can't go myself.  I'll let you know what we come up with.

Ok, DH just got back from the Dr. and Sam has a bit of pus on his tonsils...I don't know if that is what tonsilitis is but, whatever.  He is on his first round, ever, of antibiotics.  I sure hope it is not a recurring thing.  Anyway, the Dr. also said it was highly unlikely we were dealing with lactose intolerance, but that we can check it out if we want.  AND, as I was giving him his first dose of medicine, I noticed another tooth poking through.  So, my guess is that there were a lot of things happening at the same time for my poor little guy, and on top of everything else I tried to switch him over to milk!!  We will stick with formula until his tonsils clear up, and will maybe try again after Christmas.  Thanks again for all your posts.  Every bit of advice is appreciated!

Poor baby.  If you can get any probiotics, I would highly suggest them.  They actually restore the good bacteria in your gut that antibiotics destroy.

It is very unlikely based on statistics to be lactose intolerance, but some babies just have problems with the lactose, so you never know.

I agree though, sounds more like his teething and getting sick.  I would not change anything until he feels better and after the holiday's.

Keep us posted.  Hugs, Wendy

Poor bub!   :-*

If you can't get probiotics, I'd add some yogurt into the mix.  Or, soy yogurt would work though it seems that the lact. intol. might not be an issue at this point.  I'd say if you still notice problems after he's better from the cold and teething, you may want to give a dairy-free diet a shot.  If he does have milk issues it's better to know asap.

Good luck!

I think I've seen you in the NW section before, where we marveled at how similar our boys were!  Right now, DS is on the Good Start easy to digest formula.  Once he is over his tonsilitis, we will reassess and see where we are at!

sanrega:  I hope you get that appointment soon.  I know another member, Spectra.  She tried rice milk at about the age your child is.  His symptoms improved greatly.  She saw a nutritionist and they had her put him on Alimentum formula (hypoallergenic) and then later he had to go onto Neocate (amino acid based formula).

I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but rice milk is not at all complete for a baby.  In my opinion, he really needs to be on formula.

Sorry to jump in happy hollow.

The appointment card was taking longer to arrive (12 days) so I decided to ring the hospital.
Do you know what?? My case is not too serious so we are going to see the pediatrist in 5
months time.
Im sooooo angry!!!
how is it possible, my son is in pain for a long time and it's not too serious.
I'll try to find a private one as soon as possible so we can do all the test to see what food he is intolerant to.
