I've got ages and ages to worry about this but mainly because dh asked and I didn't have an answer, I thought I would look here. Iv'e been through all of the posts on MSPI and unless I've missed it, I just can't find the answer?
What do milk allergic and / or MSPI babies drink when they are done with formula at 12 months? We are on Nutramigen 1 right now.

Most of us with MSPI babies go to Rice Milk, just like Bethany said.
BUT..... I would keep him on formula as long as possible. Rice milk has very little nutrients. I always had to add coconut milk or flax seed oil for the fat and then rice protein for the protein. Then you have to worry about them reacting to that (which most are fine, but you never know).
So if it were me, I would keep on offering formula even after age 1. You never know by 18 months, he may outgrow this or you could just try rice milk then.

My son has a prescription for the Neocate Junior formula until he is 2, it is designed for those ages 1 to 9 years old. Then, hopefully he'll be okay on cow's milk, if not he will be on rice milk.

Really? Interesting - I was told we could only be prescribed the Nutramigen until he is 1, and that after that they won't prescribe formula for babies. Although, it was from a friend who had a lactose intolerant baby so perhaps in her case the alternatives were easier to get.
Is the Neocate Junior as nasty tasting as Neocate?

Actually my son hated the Neocate infant, but seems to really love the Neocate Junior. Yeah, the only other option would be for my son to drink rice milk with added fat, and since he has other food allergies they thought it best to keep him on it until he's able to eat a lot more and have more nutrition. Since he is 16 months old we are trialing cow's milk this week. If all goes well I'll take him off the Neocate now. Only because he's eating a bunch more in foods, rice bread, veggies, chicken.
If my son WAS eating lots of solids at 12 months we would have put him on the rice milk and not bother with formula. However, because he had gagging issue with so many solids, plus allergic to egg, wheat, oats, barley, beef, and mspi, we thought it best to put him on the formula. He didn't even START Neocate until he was 12 months. This was all on the advice of our pediatric dietitian.

I hope it goes well with the cow's milk Melanie. We have our paediatric dietician appointment on Feb 5th, so I figure they will tell me then what the "plan" will be, but I was jumping the gun by asking you folks now. I will see what they recommend then, as tbh, I don't like the idea of rice milk, although I'm not sure why - just a "me" thing I guess, as I'm always against things that I am not familiar with until I finally get comfortable with them! ::)

Thankfully there are many options I think for what to drink, rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk, so I hope they'll be able to give you some good advice. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I forget where you are at and you have to have a prescription for Nutramigen. In the US, I can get it right off the shelves in any store.
So in that case, if you feel like he needs it, I think they could still prescribe it to you.

DS2 used Alimentum until he was 20 months old. Can't believe he drank that disgusting stuff! Now he really doesn't drink milk, but we get calcium and other nutrients from other foods.

I don't know if anyone is still checking these posts. I realize I'm about a month behind this conversation. My son is supposed to stay on Nutramigen AA until he's 18 months old, but I'm worried that he won't want to give up his bottle if I wait that long to wean him. Was this a problem for any of you?

Any reason that you couldn't offer it in a sippy cup rather than a bottle if that's a concern for you?

I guess I never thought of formula in a sippy! But that would work just fine. He drinks juice from his sippy now so he should be ok with formula as well. I'll probably keep him on his bottle til he's a year old and then see if he'll take the "milk" from his cup.

18 months is when I got my daughter from a bottle to a sippy cup. Had to do it cold turkey, but it only took 1 day and it worked like a charm. She drank cow's milk too.

Thanks Spectra. That's good to know. We'll be keeping our ds on the amino acid nutramigen until 18 months then we'll switch to regular nutramigen. Maybe I'll just put the regular nutramigen in the sippy. Of course, this isn't for another 9 months! I guess I just like to worry about things too far in advance! :)
