Title: is this an allergy??
Post by: AidansMommy on January 05, 2009, 18:35:07 pm
Hi!!  I will give a quick background and hopefully some of you may have some advice for us :)
Ok, my first son (now 3) ended up drinking soy formula and tolerating it well after having gas, fussiness, rash of cheeks on reg formula...now he tolerates dairy fine.  My brother had a severe milk allergy but tolerated soy fine.  My sons' father was on soy formula (not sure why) and tolerated it fine.  My brother's son was on soy formula (again not sure why or if it was just preventative)....ok, so i have a 4 week old little guy and we started out BFing and then went to formula.  I tried normal dairy based formula and he had watery dark green stools, TONS of gas, fussy, etc....so I am now trying the lactose free formula and his poops are now a lighter greeny yellow color but are now mucousy AND he seems to have increased babby acne/redness and yellow scaly skin (like cradle cap) low on his forehead (in between eyebrows) and now i see he is starting to get this around the base of his nose too.  he looks miserable!  He doesn't seem to feel as bad as he looks except when pooping he cries and still gets quite alot of gas and will often be awake for 4 hours or more fussing every evening.
Phew...i think i covered what i needed to say :)  Sorry this is so long and sorry if it makes now sense....basically i am wondering if i should just switch to soy or stay with the lactose free for longer or try something like Good Start......also the hypoallergenic formulas are not really an option unless absolutely necessary (obviously will go that route if need be!) because to top everything off Daddy decided he wants to relive his youth and ditch the family.....needless to say cash is very tight and the hypoallergenic formulas are very expensive (i live in canada).
Ok, anyways, any advice, thoughts, questions you may have would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks in advance.

xx tammy

How long has he been on the lf stuff?  If it's already been a few weeks I would try the soy and hopefully that will work for you, but if not there are other formulas that a free from milk and soy proteins.

I agree with previous post. I really hope things improve soon.

Yeah I'd give it it a good 2 weeks at least.  My son's face took a week to clear up, then 3 weeks for the rest of his body to clear up.

First I am so sorry about your personal situation, I know this is tough dealing with it alone.

Based on your other sons history and the entire family's history, if it were me, I would go to SOY no doubt at all.

You can read some really scary things about it, but you can read scary things about any formula or anything for that matter.

If you go to soy, I would give it a full 2 weeks.  If no improvement, I would give the hypoallergenic formula a try.

Sounds to me like it is the milk protein, not the lactose that is affecting him.  Goodstart is just partially broken down, so would not really help there.

Please keep us posted and I would try soy.

I seriously am sorry I didn't read the last bit of your post!  You say you are in Canada.  I am in Canada too, NB, and my son is on Hypoallergenic formula.  Because I have a prescription from the doctor I get it 100% free from the government.  I know each province is different, but have you had a chance to look into it?  But try the soy first, but in the meantime check it out.

i didn't know about that!  thank you - I was very worried about what i would do if he needed the hypoallergenic (expensive!) formula.

It sounds like i should give soy a try then  and see how that goes.  I will keep you all posted on what happens if you don't mind :)

Yeah for sure.  I pick my formula up right from the Public Health building here.  Keep us posted, hope the soy works for you!
