Title: Can allergies play a role in major temper tantrums/ screaming fits?
Post by: Mydreamcametrue on January 06, 2009, 02:20:54 am
Okay dumb question I guess because I have a book and it does say YES allergies can make you have temper tantrums, outburst, all sorts of things.

Does anyone (Kelly, Melanie) anyone with kids with food allergies deal with this?

We still are dealing with some undignosed allergies (food and/or enviromental) allergies with Tyler.

We had an appoitment with the allergist on Thursday, but now I have to cancel because he broke out in a bad allergic reaction to the antibiotic he was taking.

He has the worse temper you can imagine.  He still screams and cries most of the day.  He just out of the blue, starts screaming and bites whatever/whoever is by.  He lays on the floor and starts kicking and screaming.  He takes his mouth and bangs it on the floor.  It is really scary.....

He has bite Me, the dog, and Zach  a lot.  He even bite Zach on the butt the other day because he wanted on the chair.

Really, it is scary and I am worried:(
DH just thinks he needs to blow off his steam and it is his personality.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Wendy

Sorry that you are going through this, must be really hard.

Hudson is only 16 months, doesn't throw any tantrums YET, but I can definitely see a difference.  When he was on regular formula for the first 10-11 months he was always cranky, always whiny, clingy.  I attribute this to the allergy symptoms.  I mean the formula was causing tummy upset, making him have bad eczema that obviously was really itchy, constant scratching himself, plus he was always congested.  Just imagine feeling like that every day all day I'm sure it would make you a monster, well that's how I viewed it.

I don't know if the behaviour change is a symptom of the allergy or a reaction to the symptoms, if you know what I mean.  Because he felt like utter carp it showed it in his behaviour.

I'm am starting to feel the same way as you about my son, though not as severe.  He's been on cow's milk for 1 week, now it's half milk and half Neocate.  Today he was SOOOO whiny, and clingy, and throwing things and anything seems to set him off to make him "mad" or upset enough that he'll push his sister out of the way, and purposely go over and throw her toys she is playing with or the remote on my lap.  I think that maybe he's starting to feel icky again and thus being cranky and I think I'm seeing a behaviour change.

But I'm not 100 percent sure that is what it is or if he's just in a bad mood.

Hummm  Tyler is always congested, but they say it is a sinus infection which he has never seemed to get over.

His poop seems fine though on whole milk.  Could be an age thing, who knows.

I wish I did not have to give him that dose of benadryl :(  But poor baby he looks awful.

i just want a break and for him to be happy :(  Sniff...

Poor kid, he's Hudson's age isn't it?  I can't imagine having to go through all that.  You should ask about the behaviour change when you see the doc, hopefully he'll be a good doc!

They are good docs.  They specialize in allergy and immunology.

Zach has been there before.

Not to this doc, but his partner, so I hope he is just as good.

{{HUGS}} Wendy!  I remember a thread back a while ago where one of the mommies was changing her lo's diet for a "calmer, happier child".  I can't believe I can not remember who or where the post is.  I know she had success.  I will peek around and try to find it.

So sorry you are going through all this.  You are so strong!   :-* :-*

Hi Wendy, I am so sorry you have to cancel the appointment. I hope you are able to get another soon.

James's behaviour definately changes when he is reacting to something. James does not have temper tantrums but is very clingy and cries at the least little thing. James also goes very quiet and crumpy but is to be expected as he usually has stomach pain, sore bottom from yucky bowel movements and is incredibly itchy.

I have known other children that have temper tantrums when experiencing an allergic reaction to something. I think its because they feel so bad that causes this. It must be so hard to deal with the symptoms of allergic reactions at a young age. We have a friend who lives in NZ who has a child with a dairy allergy that was not diagnosed until 2.5 years due to only mild symptoms. Their dd had very mild eczema but was clingy and always wanted to be held. This changed at around 1.5 years and she started having a lot of tantrums and cried over silly little things. One day after doing some research on the net they decided to eliminate dairy and have not looked back since. They now not only love their little girl but enjoy her. It had got that bad that they did not spend much time with friends or family because they felt like bad parents and that people judged them constantly.

nope, that didn't work either, I did not type the word censored. this is really wierd. you know that word you use when you want to make a note on a post you are interested in, that starts with a "m" and rhymes with "barking"

I just posted on the Red dyes thread at the top of this section about my dd's annatto intolerance, and her behavior was GREATLY affected by her intolerence.  It took a few weeks to get it out of her system, but it is night and day.  Almost every member of my extended family (that have seen her at her worst at various times) have commented to me on the change in her. Food hugely impacts our children, and I agree with a pp that if you felt crappy all day, you would be grumpy too!  Your description of your lo sounds very much like our DD before we made the changes.  She wasn't a biter, but always grumpy, easily angered and usually for no apparent reason, and very slow to calm.  (sadly her nickname was "bitter old Eleanor").
I hope you find the culprit. good luck!
