Title: Should I Trial Wheat Now or Later??
Post by: Spectra on March 03, 2009, 19:59:57 pm
Well we got a call from the children's hospital, 5 hours away, to come to trial wheat.  I asked if we can do it closer and they said there is no one trained in the hospitals closer who can interpret symptoms properly.  The other option is to wait until his yearly visit, which won't be until Nov.

Should I go in April, drive 5 hours, pay for hotel, etc.  Or should I just wait until Nov?  What would you do?

Myself, I want to go and find out if he can finally have wheat.  My husband doesn't understand why we can't just do it here at our city hospital, and I don't think he wants to travel there and back.  I don't know.  What do you guys think?

It depends on how important you feel it would be for ds to gain wheat as part of his diet really. I suppose you need to also consider the cost etc.

I can certainly see why you would be tempted to trial it in April because if he passes then wheat does give you a lot more variety in foods.

I think if you can aford the extra cost and you can convince your dh to take the trip then I would probably trial it in April. It will be interesting to see other peoples opinion on this actually.

Hey Mel.. Long time since I have been on here, but saw this and could not post.

Knowing me....  There is no way I could wait. If I had the money to pay for the gas, food, hotel, etc. I would have to do it in April.

BUT on the same hand if you did wait until November then it would give his body more time to build up his immunity to wheat and outgrow the allergy possibly.

Honestly, given what I know now about food allergies and intolerances that I didn't know 7 years ago, I'd probably wait till November, or at least see if you can get an earlier appt if someone cancels. A friend's FORMER allergist messed up on what to introduce when and her DD is likely to be highly HIGHLY nut-allergic FOR LIFE. This is in addition to eggs (she can now have VERY limited eggs), dairy, and still other food allergies. At least she was able to avoid the same timing issues with her second child.

Yes, it's a PAIN to cook stuff from scratch to avoid the wheat, but I also wouldn't want to deal with an extended or even lifelong wheat issue, so I'd bypass it as long as possible. And I'd probably be calling DAILY or weekly to see if there was a better and earlier time they could see us!

But that's just my two cents - worth what ya paid for it!

Thanks everyone!  Gives me a lot to think about.  My husband is going to talk to them today, so I'll update you later!
