Title: New diagnosis - but confused about what I need to do
Post by: *Liz* on March 20, 2009, 14:01:46 pm
Hi all - I'm new to these pages - but not BW  :)

My ds is 28 weeks old and still throwing up every day. Finally seen GI paed who has diagnosed food aversion due to poorly controlled reflux and likely milk intolerance. He has been losing weight ever since I started weaning from breast milk to formula. But his symptoms have been present since birth. Vomiting and bowel problems got much worse with formula though.

Anyway - we have been given some new meds for the reflux and neocate formula. I still have an almost intact milk supply so will only need to use a little bit of formula overnight. I BF morning and evening, and give bottles of EBM mixed with formula the rest of the time. I don't want to go back to full time BFing as my return to work is approaching now - and ds reflux makes feeding very frustrating. I find I take it very personally when he is on and off the breast all day, so the mixed approach is better.

Now I assume I need to dairy exclude myself? Else there is little point him being on neocate? Do I need to soy exclude also? I've never tried soy formula so no idea whether it affects him or not. From reading these boards it looks as though neocate is the last formula to try (I assume due to cost?) so not sure why I have been given it straight off.

Feeling very confused. I stupidly said I didn't need a dietician appointment when clearly I do!! Will phone and ask for one.

Also I'm very very tiny and worried that with a dairy free diet I will lose too much weight - which will in term affect my milk supply. But I guess I don't really know until I try.

Feeling so sad - I've known for months things weren't right but have just let it lie. And now he has lost weight and is on the 0.4th centile. Some of you know my medical background - so feeling extra stupid. Why did I not persue this properly until now?

Hugs hugs and I also from personal experience with my DD who was and is slowly carming down now with her reflux episodes I changed my diet to suit her needs. So I would change from dairy to soya and see if that helps but if you feel it isn't helping then you might need to try soya and dairy free and have either oat milk or rice milk. Hope the change in formula and meds do the job for you and don't take it personal it's just something that happens to some LO's. More hugs

Definitely giving you hugs!  Don't feel so guilty, you are doing great!  I agree with previous poster and try dropping the dairy first, give it a few weeks to get out of your system and your lo's.  Don't forget the hidden dairy as well.  Here is a list of all dairy and soy and their "hidden" names you'll find on processed foods.
