Title: starting on Alimentum how long before I notice a change?
Post by: tinytatsmom on April 29, 2009, 21:56:04 pm
I have just started my ds who is 8 wks old on Alimentum.  We had him on lactose free and due to diarrhea and fussy feeds the dr recommended this.  He would eat at some feeds but would fuss at others like he wanted to eat but wouldn't.  It has been 24hrs and feeds seem to be going better yet he is more cautious (eating slower with slight fussing and taking less than before).  Is this a normal reaction to the new formula and how long before he settles back into his regular feeds?

That is definitely a normal reaction.  The formula may not taste that good compared to what they had before so it can take them a few days to get use to it.  I did it gradually, slowly adding it to his milk more and more until that was all he was drinking.  With this I never had a problem with him drinking less.  I've never done it straight to Alimentum, so perhaps someone else may have an idea about how long it takes for them to get use to it.

I went 2 days and the 2nd night he was so gassy that he was up half the night.  Plus he would hardly take any unless he was starving.  We have now gone to enfamil lf formula to see how that goes.  If it doesn't we may try nutramigen to see if he likes it better.  Let's hope we get this figured out soon.

Yes, sometimes it's just a matter of changing the formula.  I hope this one works better for you!  Let us know how it goes.  :)

It took me 4 to 5 weeks of slowly mixing DS's old formula with the Nutramigen to get him to take a full bottle of it. He was a bit older (18 weeks) and so had some more developed taste buds I think, but we didn't push it too much - started with a 6 ounce bottle, 4 ounces of his previous milk + 2 ounces Nutramigen, then every 4 or 5 days increased the Nutramigen by an ounce.

Once he was on full bottles of Nutramigen it took about 3 days before we noticed some good changes in his behaviour, mood, sleep, etc.  Then even 2 or 3 weeks later he was still having really bad tummy pains and thrusting around at his abdomen - paed said this was his digestive system "healing" from the damage the milk did and just to let it run its course. That lasted until about 2 months after he had started on full bottles of Nutramigen.  From then on, all was fine.

So, for us it was a long drawn out battle but in the end, got there, and worth it!

Good luck, let us know how you get on!
