Title: Meat
Post by: vicki11m on September 23, 2009, 00:20:22 am
Any suggestions and tips for introducing meat into my 9.5 month old DS diet?

He eats solid foods pretty well, but does not like to be fed really. He is big on feeding himself. Anyone out there have any ideas for this? He doesn't really eat any meat because he gags at the meat in the jar. and frankly I do too when I smell the stuff. Yuck. :-)

I would start with ground turkey or chicken, pan fried into small pieces that he can easily pic up on his own.   Gradually you can start offering strips of lean meats (cut small, against the grain).  I started with no spices at first, and gradually started adding lots of flavours for variety.

We personally skipped meat in the jar and went straight to finger food meat around 7 months and it went very well for us.

Now can you make this up and store it at all? and if so how long etc. fridger vs freezer. My hubby is at home with the little one in the daytime (he works evenings) and so I need to make it before hand for him, most likely or it won't happen :-)

My lo hated the jarred meats (and who wouldn't, they smell like catfood! :P), but would happily eat them if I mixed them with sweet potatoes or mixed veggies.  Might work in a pinch! :)

There's the famous sausage recipe http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=102407.0 that lots of los love to eat.  Give it a try to see if he will like it.

With us, I just gave bits of roasted or cooked chicken as finger food at around 7/8 mos as well.  As we just offer what the family was eating, I never had to freeze anything other than leftovers.  ;)  If you do freeze meat, make sure that you reheat it to a very HOT temp and then let it cool to eat.

At that age, DS ate a lot of ground meats (turkey, chicken and beef).  You can quickly pan fry it with a bit of cooking spray or olive oil, and its fun to introduce a little bit of spice with this, too, if you feel like.  You can easily break the ground turkey into small, finger-sized, bits when you cook it this way.  Should be something your DH could whip up in a few minutes, as well, when he's home alone.
