Title: what are these 'new' symbols?

K, I know the ones on the far Left mark 'hot topics' and what not, but what are the ones right next to them?  What do they mean?  Is there some way I change what it shows or do they do it on there own or what?  I've been away from b4 these things were added.  Thanks for any help!

It's a message icon, when you make a post you can choose one (it's right underneath where you type in the subject on a new topic)
