Title: Is it my 'puter ot the site?
Post by: ~Emma~ on December 08, 2009, 18:44:51 pm
Firstly seems really slow. Secondly I keep getting the internal error page thingy when I am replying. I have to try several times for my replies to come up.

Dont know what would be worse...my computer being broken or the site going down again!!  :(

I do see nosenose (Tom) on the site, so he may be fiddling with some things.  Hang tight ladies... and in long response cases, select all and copy it somewhere before posting, just in case

Yep, Tom has been using his magic fingers on the servers, that's only a small part of what has been causing the slow down that we've been having over the past few weeks though.

Tom is helping to clean up the server so that we can get the best performance, we shouldn't see another serious outage like the one we had a few months back - the one that lasted for weeks - as we are now in control of the server ourselves and, we have funds to pay for the next 2 years :)

As we are now on a Virtual Private Server (VPS), as opposed to a dedicated server, it's paramount that we get all the information that is currently on the server cleaned up and sorted out correctly.  Being on a VPS means that we do not have anywhere near the performance that we had previously so some serious housekeeping is needed.

A huge Thank You to Tom, as without his help we would no doubt still be offline now!

Just so you all know, i'm not doing anything to cause these internal server errors, I read the forums daily anyway which is why you see me online. When they *do* show the problem then I jump onto the server and get it going again asap :)

As Gareth said, I am working on cleaning up some old junk on the server in the hopes of making it more reliable. It will take some time, but we will get there and as Gareth said, we will *not* be getting any longterm outages again like before :)

Sorry about the lost posts though, that's hard :(

Thanks for your patience!

Tom...

Another suggestion on how not to lose your long posts is to write them on a word processor program (eg Microsoft Word) and then cut and paste them onto the reply page once you are all done.
I find our computer (and yes it's our computer) sometimes is a bit temperamental about letting me spend a long time composing.
So I turn off the modem, happily compose my reply off-line, then reconnect to the web and post my reply.  That way I have a copy of the reply on my hard-drive if I can't post it.  Found this out the hard way when the big crash in August happened and I had a HUGE post for a thread ready to send.
