Title: Rice Allergy?
Post by: Sus on January 07, 2010, 13:54:47 pm
Hi All, I am wondering if anyone has come across a rice allergy with their little one.  I first noticed that my son couldn't take rice at all in any form when I started weaning him, which was around 5/6 months.  Even if he had some ground rice that was in a jar of food he would react quite badly with it.

His symptoms were screaming for a while, with a tense tummy, awake through the night for up to 2 hours with painful wind.

Can anyone advise, should I see his gp about this or do you think I should try him with it again?  He is now 7 months and hasn't had anything containing rice for about 5 weeks.  He seems to handle most other foods ok, i.e. dairy.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Susan

Hi Susan,

It's possible to be allergic to anything.  My DD2 actually had a sensitivity/allergy to rice until just a few months ago.  However, it sounds like your bub might be getting constipated with it?  That was the case w/DD1 - we gave her a couple of spoonfuls and she was sooooo miserable, completely constipated and in pain - we never gave her rice products again until she was around 2.

Were there any other signs?  Any rashes, any vomiting, congestion?  What about strange stools, either loose and mucousy, or hard and pebble like (hard can be constipation)?

I think that's the issue, of course can't be sure.  Glad it helped once you removed the rice and he doesn't show other signs of food allergies!

HTH!

Hi, thanks for your reply.  Glad to hear it's not just my little one then, you start to think you are imagining it.  I'll leave trying him again then for a while longer.  I didn't notice any other symptoms, just pain in his tummy and terrible wind.  He was totally miserable, wee soul.

Can you tell me when you tried DD2 again with rice and found she was ok?

Thanks

Susan

She was around 10 months old I think?  I never gave the cereal.  She actually reacted through my breastmilk so then I tried rice again myself and she was ok.  I gave it to her as brown basmati rice.  When I would give it to her I made sure she had lots of pears or other foods that I knew kept things moving, lol.  Now she can eat it all the time no issues.  My older DD on the other hand at 4 yo still can't handle too much of it (once she had it every day for a few weeks and it didn't sit well, but she can have it a few times a week).

((hugs)).  It's so hard seeing our LOs unhappy and hurting.  How old is your bub now?  I would wait at least 4-6 months from the last time before trialing it again.  And I would use the actual rice, in a very small amount, with a side of prunes or pears.  :)
