Title: why is soybean oil and soy lechitin suppose to be safe for MSPI?
Post by: chars mum on March 17, 2010, 19:32:14 pm
Does anyone know why they are suppose to be OK?   I also read somewhere that if a product states it contains "vegetable oil" then it is usually soybean oil and should be avoided.    I'm sooo confused!

I have just checked out a website recommended by our Paed Allergist: foodallergies.org.  It also states that studies show soybean/soy oil is safe.  Very curious....

I didn't think it was. ??? I stay away from anything soy related for my LO.  I have heard that some people with soy allergies/in sensitivities can handle soy lechtin, but it is not a given.  I am not sure why though.

The reasons typically cited is that there is so little protein, and in some cases no protein, present in the oil or lechitin that it *should* not cause any reactions.  There are rare cases that it can and will.  I personally didn't use it myself for a long time, but know many who did with no issues.

Wow, I wish I had known this back then.  I long ago gave up on avoiding the lecithin because it is in everything.  I told myself that it was so low on the list, that there couldn't really be much in there.  :)

Just found out that the soybean oil and lethicin are made from the fat, not the protein.   I suppose it all depends on the separation process as to whether any protein remains.   Hmmm, don't like that they aren't considered 100% safe though.
