Title: Citrus intolerance???
Post by: chars mum on April 07, 2010, 21:32:44 pm
Can anyone help me find a list of foods considered "citrus" (other than the obvious oranges, lemons, etc.)?  Our doc has just asked me to eliminate all citrus from my diet to see if perhaps that is what is causing my son to have tummy pain and blood in his poop.  I've already cut out dairy, soy, beef and rice.
Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks Scarlett's mom  :)  I am worried that I also need to cut out foods containing citric acid.  That would be much more difficult as it is in a lot of food, often used as a preservative.  I didn't get a chance to ask the doc yesterday.  Anyone else been asked to cut out citrus to see if their LO is intolerant?

I haven't, but I remember for a while my mom had to go easy on both sitrus and tomotoes; not sure if there's more relationship than them both being acidic.

My DH has had to cut out citrus and citric acid (makes meals interesting).

Cranberries really bother him, which was a surprise.  Will try to think of some of the less obvious things that he avoids.  Tomatoes are the one thing that he really misses.

Thanks everyone for your input, much appreciated!   :)  Citric acid is in everything!!!   :o  It's making an already limited diet sooo much more limited, YIKES!  The website you found Scarlett's mom is great, thanks!  I have printed off the list of foods containing citric acid and have stuck it on the fridge.
Funny you mention cranberries RachelC.  After 5 days, DS is only just getting over the worst flare-up he has had thus far and I have been wondering if it was the cranberry sauce I ate Sun-Tues (left overs!).  It's either that or eggs, I don't know.

How's it going?  Have you been able to eliminate more citrus and see any (hopefully!) improvement w/your LO?

We ended up being admitted to the hospital on Saturday afternoon and came home late Monday night.  Jack was not improving despite all my efforts and I couldn't get the notion out of my head that perhaps it wasn't food intolerances but something else.  Anyway, to make a long story short, after several test and various assessments, we finally got to see a Pediatric Gastroenterologist who specializes in MPI.  Jack definitely is MSPI and the new plan is to avoid all dairy, soy, beef and legumes.  So back on citrus and rice  :)  Also so new reflux med.   Jack is going very well, he has STTN the last 2 nights and his day time sleep has miraculously improved too!
Thanks for all your support and input!  :)

Wow, glad you got it sorted, even if it did mean such a drastic way to get it done. And glad he's doing better now - it's such a relief when you get the right treatment and they feel better right away.

Hadn't heard about avoiding all legumes for MSPI tho. News to me, and I love to know this stuff. Is that related to the soy intolerance then?

Yes, I did feel like I was going to an extreme by taking him into the ER but he was not improving, in fact I felt he was getting worse as his latest flare-up had lasted a full week as opposed to 1-2 days.  I needed answers and I got them!  :)

Deb, you may be interested in the following article:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2553152/  It was written by the Ped Gastro we saw.  Talk about lucky!  Of all the Ped Gastro docs at the hospital, we had this guy!  :)  :)  :)
