Title: is he intolerant to gluten?
Post by: EloysH on June 22, 2010, 04:31:31 am
Hi Ladies,

I have not eaten gluten since DS2 was 3 weeks old.  He is now 13 weeks.  3 days ago I decided to trial spelt bread whilst holding everything else on my elimination diet constant.  I have been eating spelt bread for 3 days, no other gluten as yet.
I have been waiting for a poo, today got the first one,  I am confused,  its green, but with some mustard seeds and not mucuousy. It is very thin and came out with a smelly fart and egg smelling gas.    What do you think, is this indicative of intolerance to gluten.  Usualy his poos are yellow with mustard seeds and very thin, often coming with farts anyway,  He often does egg smelling farts too..  My milk supply is normal, not high.

fwiw i've been told to look for mucous rather than worry about the colour. interested to see what others say tho. bet the bread tasted good ;)

Honestly, I wouldn't be very concerned about it.  If the only change is that it's a little green, I would continue on with it and keep track of any other changes (fussiness/sleeplessness/rashes/mucous/etc.).

Hopefully the trial will yield positive results!

thanks!  we got another green poo this time with a touch of mucus in it tonight.  Also, his typical time to be refluxy is between 4-5am, and both days he has been refluxing and awake for a while after feeding  at those times.  Still not convinced though.  (in denial anyway).

hmmm that sounds more like intolerance symptoms now :-\ nothing else changed in diet??

any ideas what else you can trial gluten in and not wheat? k seems to have settled a little the last 2 days as in not spitting up so much, i'm crossing fingers and toys that the med increase was enuf and will consider a trial if he is stable for a week. i am sooooo over diet restrictions and am dreading salicylate free if that is needed :(

oh no :( if he's gluten intolerant does that mean he is coeliac?? (however you spell it...) pretty sure you can test for that.

Not necessarily I believe.

I am pretty sure they grow out of it with the reflux. There's a test but you need to eating gluten before you have the test. I wouldn't bother testing until hes obviously not growing out of it.

elo, he is fine with soy isnt he?? not sure what bread substitutes you've found but there is a gluten free bread by country life (available at coles or woolies) that actually resembles 'real' bread (i'm sure YKWIM, lol). i stopped it a while back tho as there is a soy product in it. also, i eat rice bread or buckwheat bread by naturis (available at health food store) which isnt very nice as a bread but is pretty good toasted with dairy free butter, etc.

The past month or so I've been completely off the soy too. Before that I was still eating hidden soy and soy sauce. I have not been super careful with hidden soy, though but been avoiding most.   So I wait to give the bread a go.

I am actually tossing up which food challenge to do next it's a toss up between tomato paste & tomato puree and soy, or the onion family. I am a little scared about what could happen with the soy. Tomato paste would add a whole new dimension to my life, so would onion. I am worried about a possible relfux flare up though due to the acid and also the "sals" content. I think onions have the best chance of no reaction.

When are you planning on starting the challenge?  I would wait until the diapers are back to normal, it could take a couple of weeks.  Also, you may want to pick something a little more nutritionally dense.  I don't know if you are on a total elimination diet - but if so you may want to consider something like avocado?

I'm not eating:
tomato puree and paste
onion family
alcohol
caffeine
fizzy drinks
garlic
chilli
strong spices
brocolli cauliflower, brussel sprouts
gluten
dairy (eating cooked butter in things like cakes and some trace)
soy (eating some hidden)
yeast
food colouring
trying to avoid as many glutamates as possible making own stock
low preservatives, but not total avoidance

Good job Elosie! I'm impressed with your perserverance and ability to find things to eat! I'd go with trying onion next.

thanks luvs   :)

good news, Ds2 poos have been back to normal for at least 2 days now. My memory won't go any further back  ::)

So tonight I decided to try onion.  I'm just too eager to expand my diet and my sanity is seriously getting tested right now!

I cooked spag bol for the boys and was soooo tempted to eat some, and I just had a spoonful. I thought too silly, if he reacts I won't know if it's the tomato, onion or garlic.   So having boring Quinoa with cooked onion and roasted mild spices and pistachios.

More hugs, hun.  It sounds like torture making yummy foods that you cannot eat.  :-(  I am so hoping you are able to expand your diet.  Everything crossed that last night's food was fine.

YAY!!  Great news for normal poos!   ;D

The good news is if there is no reaction in the next few days tomatoes are probably ok too.

And I know what you mean about making things you can't eat - it's so hard.  I remember having to make several gorgeous cakes from scratch for various events and not being able to have one teeny lick!  Upside was that my thighs thanked me.   ;)

Hoping things continue to look up!

How is this going, Eloise? Have you been able to add back more stuff?

I think I will try further restrictions after the weekend. Not sure whether to try your list or Vicku's  (http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=165526.new#new) even though I don't have access to acupuncture.

DS2 is much better in terms of screaming and sleep (although naps are still very sketchy) and poos have been yellower but mucousy is coming and going in varying amounts and ecxema on his face persists and has flared a few times (yesterday it was almonds I think).

So far I'm not eating:
-dairy (perhaps a bit of trace)
-soy (except lechithin; soy oil is not okay, right??)
   -peanuts
   -beans
   -berries
   -yeast
-corn (but I cheated on this one last night so we'll see!!)
   -chocolate (dark, DF)
   -shellfish

Hi Shannon,

I accidentally ate gluten last night for dinner and he had a bad night.

We also had a really bad flare up about a week ago, I dn;t know what cuased it.  I think it may have been a build up of salicylates and amines as I have been increasing them in my diet very slowly ove rthe past few weeks.   So now i have pulled right back again.  I am seeing a dietician that specialises in baby and intolerance on friday so will let you know what I find out.  THere is not much I can eat at the moment.  :-[

I would not use Vickus list, as I looked into alot of it and some stuff is based on chinese medicene theory but things are actually ok to eat,   For example brown rice is fine.  If you are looking for foods to exclude I would strongly recomment the RPAH elimination diet, developed in Australia by Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Allergy unit. There is a low and moderate level.  If you follow the low level it will send you mental, but It will allow you to do proper food challenges.  Also the Fed up Food network follows this diet and is comprehnsive about what is good and bad about certain foods, explains about all the food groups, so you will understand for example tha berries are high in salicylates, if they are a problem you will need to watch other high slaicyalte foods like coconut cream/oil, mushrooms etc   I currently am following the low RPAH diet, (last week or so as I just don't want another reaction right now.
