Title: rice and coconut milk?
Post by: lilisuze on June 29, 2010, 11:30:42 am
we recently switched from soy milk to rice milk 4oz coconut milk 1oz for DS milk intake.

he is cows milk intolerant.

for the last 2 weeks he has kept being sick in his mouth, and occasionally a little vomit on the floor (just like when he was a baby on regular formula) Yesterday, he did a really big vomit (covered my entire house - or so it seemed when i did 3 loads of washing, including bedding, toys, rugs and towels!) and hasnt been sick since.

I gave him soy milk last night and this morning.

I know there are known problems with estrogens in soy milk, but this really does seem to be the only thing that agrees with his tummy. where should i go from here?  ??? ???

could do with a few hugs too folks......

lilixx

This must be really hard...

Do you have to give him any milk at all? As long as he is getting the calcium/vitamins from somewhere he should be OK... You'll probably need to use a supplement (the calcium in the soy/rice milk is supplemented anyway) Hopefully you can do a challenge at age 2 so not too many more months!

{{Hugs}}  Have you tried hemp milk?  It has a much better natural nutrient profile than rice or soy and the box I have says something about having "no known allergens" so it seems like it may be a good one to try?

Agreeing with pp that there's no NEED to do milk.  My DD quite bf at 17 months and wouldn't accept any milk substitute.  I give a calcium supplement and try to include some other dietary sources.

HUGS Lili!

May not be of much use, but Henry still has soya milk and is fine on it. I know there is huge controversy, but if that is what works for your LO, then do it.

Having said that, I agree with the pp, milk is not an absolute must anymore. My sister's son is MSPI and he is on watered down juice only, a good multivitamin and a calcium supplement.

HUGS and good luck!!

Big (((hugs))))   :-* :-*

My DD didn't do very well w/coconut milk at first for some reason.  She eventually didn't take it and we do fortified almond milk now.

You've gotten great feedback from the other mamas, so I'm just dropping off lots of ((hugs)) for you.

Hi and BIG hugs,
We have to see a dietician and she told me not to use rice milk for little ones.
She has advised me to use oat milk - you can get this calcium enriched.
I haven't tried to give it to dd yet but I tried it when I had to cut out diary, soy and eggs when b-feeding and it is ok.
I agree, if you don't need to switch then stick with the soya milk.
Hope this helps :-)

We do soy milk for ds as per our doctor's recommendation. I know there are controversies about it, but we have chosen an organic, unflavoured milk and he has about 20oz per day. It was what worked best for us, and so far so good :)

I'm interested to hear why your dietician discouraged the use of rice milk, irene?

Not sure if Irene's dietician said the same thing, but our doctor said that rice milk is SO low fat that it's not a good substitute for cow's milk in toddler's diets.  Soy milk is low fat too, but it's higher fat/protein than rice milk.  Our doctor did say to ensure that Dylan had lots of healthy fats in his diet since he wasn't getting them from cow's milk (avocado, vegetable oils, fish oils, etc.)  I have heard though (not from our dr) that rice milk is ok when dietary fat levels are increased to compensate, which is why many los on rice milk are also on coconut milk, which is high in good fats.

Did you get the same information, Irene?

Vikki, I think that make sense...I've heard that as well from another mom. Thanks! I've been wondering what dd could drink if she was still showing signs of intolerance.

Hi there, sorry for the delay in replying...
My dietician told me that there is so little nutritional value in rice milk that it's not a good substitute. Also in the UK, I believe the general consensus is to avoid rice milk as it contains inorganic arsenic. It is ok if you are adult sized but for toddlers, the ratio to their bodies would be greater and especially if they are drinking it all the time. So we're told to avoid it for toddlers under 4 years of age.
Hope this helps!

That's interesting. DS can't take cow or soya milk and the dietician said rice milk is fine! Got DS weighed today (he is 1.5 yrs) and his weight gain etc has been consistent since birth.  Inorganic arsenic? Sounds scary!! We are at paed (eventually) next week so will ask them ....

Yes do ask and see what they say. I think it is relatively new advice from the dietician here as she told me that she used to recommend rice milk. I first saw her about a year ago now so that might show how new the info is... I'm hoping it isn't too bad as I was drinking loads of it when I eliminated diary!!!

I'm trying to work out where the arsenic would come from, what ingredients or process..... I'd not heard of this before, so I'm following along.

Deb--I'd never heard it before either, so I googled it and found information all going back to one report issued by the food safety agency in the UK (similar to our FDA I guess?).

This is a pretty good summary of all the info;

http://mickirose.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/arsenic-in-rice-milk-%E2%80%93-is-this-true/

I think it is one of those minerals (?) that appears in the soil and as the rice grows, it picks it up and stores it. I guess a bit like oily fish picking up mercury from the sea.

Hope this helps!

Wow, that's interesting. Thanks for sharing that. Do they have anything to say about the practice of giving baby rice as a first food to babies then?

Not as far as I am aware. I think it has to do with the cooking etc.
You know, I never really thought about it in actual rice!

I did read something about the fact that china (of all places!) won't allow most US produced rice baby cereals in because they contain too much arsenic by their standards.
