Title: Happy site is up, but....
Post by: deb on August 30, 2010, 02:34:36 am
.... it's still REALLY SLOW! It has been slower, to be fair, but even on the "new" computer it's still taking a good while to go from page to page. (And the old computer, well.... ::))

Anything new on the new server front? Anything we can do to help move things along a bit quicker?

Don't worry, I have been looking at this pretty much non-stop since the new server. I am working with the provider to work out why it's sooo slow.

Also, we are pretty close to having a new version of the forum software installed, but we need to fix the underlying slowness first. Then we can switch to the new forum which looks quite speedy on my laptop (yeah that's right, my 4 year old laptop is quicker than the server right now!)

Thanks for your patience through this unbearably slow time. Just know i'm always looking :)

Tom...

Yep no need to worry, if he has to hear my 'OMG this is tooo slow, why is this so slow, can't you make it faster, I can't even read or post it's just SO SLOW' one more time...lol

Not that it's completely in his hands, but he's trying bless him.  My husband is a really good egg :-)

Is it just me, or did what I just did make a huge speed difference?

Now I really struggled on that sentence, it doesn't seem right and as a result, I have had that 'awareness' feeling of how funny the word 'did' is :)

In my confused and sleep deprived/overworked state, that sentence made perfect sense.

<y old computer is barely registering the site, when it notices it at all, but the newer Mac is whipping thru at relatively blinding speed. Guess I'll have to use this one for BW then. :)

Thanks Tom!

Is it just me, or did what I just did make a huge speed difference?
Ahem... you are right, this is 'off'. It should say, "Is it just me, or did what I just do make a huge speed difference?"

Sorry. Carry on.

Well I had that too but it seems wrong... "what I just do"?...

Surely it's 'Did X make a difference?' Where X = 'what I just did', not 'what I just do'.

Anyway, the easy resolution is to just say something like "Is it just me, or did the changes I just made make a huge speed difference?" but that's no fun when there is a hard-to-get-right sentence to ponder over :)

"Is it just me, or has what I've done made a huge speed difference?"

Or

"Me thinks I just done did a guuud job!"

Either way, it's soooo much betterer.  ;)

Tom, don't worry about the grammer.  We make up new words and sentence structures all the time.  'Tis normal.

Oh I do too, all the time lol (I will need to be careful in front of Finn, though it didn't do me any harm growing up with stibs and wotnot).

But sometimes a sentence can just bug me, and this one is still bugging me :)
