Title: Nutritious snack idea to replace milk feed?
Post by: Buntybear on November 14, 2010, 19:21:18 pm
Hi,

We are going to start weaning from BFing soon and would appreciate some ideas for snacks to replace the feeds.

DS is currently dairy/egg/wheat/soy free!

Any ideas  :D

You can start with some veg juice mixed with the milk so he can get used to the taste; you might also try putting it in a small cup/beaker, like shot glass size, to get him used to that.

Some babies also do OK with rice cereal mixed w/EBM and eventually a bit of pureed veg. (I prefer to start with veg instead of fruit in the event it starts up a sweet tooth so early.) However, some babies find rice constipating (Josie was one) and some commercial rice cereals do contain dairy, so reading labels is important if you buy the cereal. Making your own may be the way to go here if you decide to do the rice cereal route.

Hi, that was quick! We are well into solids now. I meant that we are dropping milk feeds - ie 4 down to 3. Having read the FAQ on weaning it says to offer a snack where they would have had the milk feed. As he can't have a yoghurt, cheese stick etc I was wondering what else to do that is nutritious.

Ahh, gotcha. My computer is old and slow so I opted out of looking at tickers. LOL

Rice pasta? Chunks of meat. Small bits of fruit or soft veg (like cooked carrots). Gluten-free bread cut into cubes. Gluten-free crackers.

bb, pretty limited options here too as he's been dairy/soy/wheat free til this week he is handling (fx) wheat. but i've been doing veggie puree spread or df butter on rice cakes or gf toast fingers. we are dropping to 3 milk feeds too so will have to add an afternoon snack too. hope someone else has some more ideas.

i was thinking of making pikelettes now that he can have wheat, was going to give him buckwheat pancakes (or gf ones) if he couldnt.

Pancakes are a good idea but have egg in don't they?

it's a tough one,  I am really struggling to get some variety happening too, especially snacks.

Its not really filling but K eats a celery stick if I pull off the strings.

He also likes paw paw and bananna for a snack.

A lamb cutlet woth a bit of meat on it.

roasted swede chips

Home made potato rosti (cook a batch and freeze and thaw in oven/microwave)

What about homemade rusks?

Kirry what is this "vege spread" you mention?

egg and gluten and dairy free pancakes are tolerable if you can add some bits of bannana into them Use "no egg, rice milk and gluten free flour.

Eloise keep meaning to start that finger food thread. Shall I put it in the Allergies or Solid Food board??

I am thinking we'll get more useful hits of people that have BTB on the food allergies board.

elo, veggie puree spread is just sweet pot or zucchini or swede or something mashed and spread on toast fingers.

i made some gf rusks for k, not interested! i microwaved them to harden them up but think i'll skip that step next time as out of the oven was more like a bread stick which he might nibble on...

An idea dietician had - custard made with DF or formula milk. Bird's custard powder is made from corn flour. Good substiute for yoghurt or fromage frais that I expect a lot of Mum's would use.  :)

Your dietician can get your doctor to prescribe Neocate which is dairy free formula - DS wont drink it (which is saying something!!) but happily eats it in pancakes, muffins, etc etc

Thanks - we are trying Nutramigen AA at the mo. Had some windiness so off it for a few days as a trial. May have to go onto Neocate next. x

Neocate is pretty disgusting - DS would drink a mouthful of it and then shudder!!!  Even in cooking it smells really bad, but usually DS will eat it in the baking.

good idea for the custard, i used to do that for ds1 when he started wanting less milk (amazing what you forget so quickly!).

by the way, ds2 is fine on neocate, drinks plenty, tho he has had one bottle of it day since about 15 weeks, only switched to full neocate at 8mths and he didnt mind.

i actually caved and did vegemite as a food challenge... day 5 and he is loving it so fx.
