Title: Iodine Allergy?
Post by: bensmuma on November 17, 2010, 19:10:38 pm
Anyone familiar with or have a child with an iodine allergy? We're off to an allergist soon to figure out what ds ate that gave him big red rash and hives immediately. One night I gave him sushi (immitation crab) with soya sauce and he immediately went allergic on his hands and face! The next night we had edamame and soya sauce..same reaction less severe. So I'm thinking because seaweed is so high in iodine as is soy sauce (the common denominator here) he may have an iodine allergy! Just looking for similar stories...or maybe I'm waaay off?

Sorry to hear. Sounds awufl!
I haven't heard of Iodine allergy. Could it just be a soy allergy though because soy is one of the top allergens?

Well, he's eaten soy beans a million times with no reaction. And the soy sauce with sushi had a much more severe reaction than the edamame with soy sauce. So I don't think so, but I don't know?

Iodine allergy is exceedingly rare - not impossible of course, but I agree with Jenny that it's more likely to be another allergen.

Was it the same soy sauce both times?  What are the other ingredients?  Did he have more soy sauce in the sushi (explaining the more severe reaction)?  What common ingredients were there between the two meals?  What has he had soy/soybeans in before?  What were the other ingredients in the imitation crab?

Same soy sauce both times, probably same amount of sauce each time. He only had half a roll of sushi dipped in soy sauce and whammo! Soy sauce the only common ingredient. He's always had edamame cooked in the pod but has never dipped it in soy sauce until this night. That's the only soy he's ever had and he's had it at least once a week for a long time. I'm not sure what you mean "What were the other ingredients in the imitation crab?". Do you mean the sushi roll? I can't tell you what was in the crab I have no idea. I may have to go to the store to find out. The soy sauce is water, soybeans, salt and organic wheat. We're waiting to hear back on a allergist referral now.

Both imitation crab and soy sauce have wheat. Any chance it's a wheat allergy?

What kind of things have idoine in them? Could you give him something that has iodine but no soy - maybe just on his skin as a patch test.

Table salt has iodine added to it...

Yup, exactly.  It is very rare, but can happen.  DD2 could not tolerate table salt for a long time.  We had to use sea salt only.  Sounded crazy, but it was true.  There is also a correlation between the iodine and a corn allergy.....so ask to be tested for corn too.  That is how we found out,,...she had a severe corn allergy and in doing research found the link between table salt/iodine/corn, removed it from my diet (she reacted purely through me ingesting it and then nursing her!), she was fine.

((((hugs)))).
