Title: cows milk
Post by: kiansmam on January 09, 2011, 09:40:34 am
i've recently started weaning kian onto cows milk. i.e part formula, part cows milk. since doing this he has gone from being a constipated baby to having quite loose stools. Is this normal? thanks

Sweetie are they just loose with normal colour, smell (sorry) etc or are they loose as in diarrhoea, watery, mucousy, odd smelling etc?  If they seem generally ok and your LO is still sleeping well and not showing other worrying symptoms (tummy cramps, excessive gas, eczema etc) then I would probably continue slowly.  I'm not an expert on this however, so you may want to wait for more opinions.

Hope your LO is okx

Agree with Lizzie!  It is very typical to see stools change up a bit hen introducing cow's milk. It's a very hard protein to digest.  If that's all you're seeing, just keep an eye on it, but I think you'll be fine.

When we switched to cow's milk DS's poos changed a little and his bottom was getting REALLY sore (no other side effects at all though). When I suggested to the doctor that it could be a reaction to the milk he practically laughed in my face. Anyway, went on for a good few months trying to find another reason for it and just treating it with cream (keeping it at bay but not solving the problem) til I suddenly told myself this is silly and thought I'd switch to soya just to see.......well my instinct was right and he's been on soya for a long time now with no more problems. He obviously has an intolerance of sorts, albeit not a serious one as I still put cow's milk on his cereal, he just can't cope with it as a drink.

Definitely give it time but keep an eye on it as pp's have said.
