Title: Is rice milk OK for 8mo MPI baby?
Post by: Roseii on February 17, 2011, 15:04:22 pm
Not as a replacement for milk feeds but to make up foods such as baby rice, ready brek etc?

At the mo I am making up nutramigen just to mix in with baby rice, it's such a faff. I really just want to be able to use an "instant" milk to add to/make up solids...

Anyone?

Thanks xxx

I don't see why not if that's all you're using it for.  I don't think there's much nutritional value to it though.  I do use almond milk in cereals/granola/oatmeal for F without any issues.  :)

Rice milk isnt advised for babies/children under the age of 4 1/2 due to the levels of arsenic so I wouldnt give it to an 8 month old.  Could you use something like Oat milk?

Fine in small amounts in cooking, but not as a main drink in children under 5 for the reason given by pp.

That is the current UK advice anyway.

I use rice milk in porridge but oat milk mainly.

Could you not use nutramigen if she still takes it??

hemp milk was something I was aske dto ahve by the GI specialist while nursing DS when he was MPI...and its closest to cows milk in terms of nutrition..not sure how its for children

Thanks girls, wow I didn't know all of that!

Could you use something like Oat milk?

I have never tried that, is it with the other long life milk generally?

Could you not use nutramigen if she still takes it??

I could it's just a bit of a faff, if I'm going out and want to prepare her food whilst I'm out and need to time it with making up the milk feed and her actually drinking it in relation to needing a bit of it for the food etc ::) I just want an instant milk, it was so much easier with DD1 just using cow's milk  :P

Good luck Mukta, that's great that he's been reacting OK to bits of dairy in your diet ;D I have been having the odd bit and DD2's BMs have been fine which is my main worry but she keeps crying and straining with wind in the early hours of the morning so it is affecting her a bit  :-\

I've never heard of hemp milk?!!

I get oat milk from the long life section in Tesco.

Thing is it only stays fresh for 5 days, so you would waste a heap  :-\.

This is what we were advised too and this is what we did actually.  M is 2.5 and still drinks rice milk.

Martina - What do you mean nutritional value? His is fortified and has the same levels of vitamins as all of the other milks (soy, almond, etc.)

I was actually wondering the same thing for cooking too....

I wonder if there are different types of rice milk then?  I just thought that there was very little 'good stuff' in rice milk, it was just a watered down drink really.

Ok, so here is what one of my book's says about rice milk:
"It's fortified with calcium but lacks the fat needed for extra calories."
So I suppose to just mix with cereals is totally fine as you're not relying on it for it's fat content.  But it's not suitable as a drink because it's not high enough in fat.

Kara, does M drink anything else other than rice milk?  How do you make sure he is getting enough fats?

I'm trying to keep my options open for F as well for the coming months.  I don't intend to wean BFing but would like to give him something, and he may or may not be ok with cow's milk so just want to know what's out there.  Although I think I would go with almond/coconut milk before rice milk.

Eloise's thread that I posted goes into this kind of stuff in good detail as well, for those who are wondering.  :)

I lied - they do have hemp milk in the UK - Waitrose. Waitrose for almond milk as well.

Obviously I do not have a waitrose near me!

No, as you know I can only trial 1 new food monthly and I haven't gotten around to almonds or almond milk.  His milk has the same stats as every milk in the isle.  He gets tons of fat via avocados, flaxseed, olive oil, canola oil, coconut milk, PB (which he is obsessed with and eats on everything), and fish oil.  So I am definitely not worried about that.  Probably the one area I don't stress over..lol.  From the age of 1-2, I added coconut  milk to his rice milk, so that it was the equivalent of whole milk.  But now I don't worry, since I know he is getting fat in other areas.

Rice milk contains the same calories as semi skimmed cows milk it has sunflower oil added
but obviously they shouldnt have semi skimmed till 2

Almond milk is VERY expensive though £3 in holland and barrt for a litre

This is all I was wondering as I know coconut milk added brings the fat content up to the same as cow's milk.  :)

Thanks girls I think what I will do is use rice milk when I just need to soften up the solids a bit but still use nutramigen for the baby rice and ready brek xx
