Title: dairy free substitute for cheese????
Post by: clairebear79 on April 05, 2011, 06:21:24 am
I know of substitutes for milk & butter but can you get anything dairy free that you could use in place of cheese in recipes????

I'm in the UK

TIA.xxx

What kind of recipe? I think there are soya cheeses but personally I would go without on the cheese front as nothing could really repace it fully!

I just have the Annabel Karmel cookbook & it has loads of yummy sounding recipes that all contain cheese.  Just wondered if there was anything else I could use!!!!  Never mind we will just leave it out.

thanks.xx

In the "free from" sections you can buy powdered cheese granules for making cheese sauce - not tried them but DS loves them.  Cheese is the main dairy thing I am missing being dairy free.

Suppose you could always just miss out the cheese in the recipe? Maybe add spices or herbs or something to add flavour?  I always miss out ingredients I don't like in recipes!!

Never found a cheese replacement either and ikwym about the annabell Karmel recipes.

Try a White sauce base (dairy free milk, dairy free marg and flour) or you can get oat milk that may help make a slightly more creamy texture.

We have not managed to find a decent hard cheese substitute but my ds used to really like the dairy free soft cheese made by Pure. He went off it so we stopped buying it. Might get some again though for using in recipes maybe.

Ohh, I have never seen that - where did you get it from?

thanks for the suggestions folks!!!!

I did spot a tub of dairy free parmesan today that I thought might be ok for using in cooking but its soya based.

We are trialling dairy & soy free for a little while (DS is possible MPI) & so its no good for us just yet.  He'll just have to do without the cheese for the short term until we know if dairy is bothering him or not.

ps Buntybear - you can get Pure in the major supermarkets - just bought some dairy free marg from Morrisons today.

Don't know about what's available where you are,but the soy cheese substitutes in our grocery all have casein in them, so useless for dairy-free anyway. :P

Just what I was going to add! You really have to read the ingredients of everything!

I use Daiya "cheese" it's dairy free, soy free, gluten free... And it melts well and tastes decent. Not sure how widely it's distributed though.

I've heard of this before, but I've never been able to find it here.
