Title: Probiotic - dairy/soy free in US?
Post by: mianita on April 12, 2011, 03:41:07 am
Hello!
I'm fighting my DDs green mucusy poop with blood and as she is EBF I'm on elimination diet (excluded most allergic foods- dairy, wheat, soy, eggs).
I'd like to give her probiotics, but most infant probiotics contain dairy or soy traces.
Any advice on infant dairy/soy/wheat free probiotics? I live in US btw :)
And maybe anyone using one without allergens for adults?
will apreciate advice!

And just a short question- soy sauce doesn't have soy protein, so it is safe?

TIA!!!

Solgar does a dairy/soy/gluten free powder that is tasteless and you can add to foo/milk/water. Am pretty sure it's a US brand.

http://www.solgar.co.uk/product/abc-dophilus-powder-children-and-infant-formula-175-oz-496g-E10.html

I just ordered it today as DS on antibiotics ... waiting for it to arrive.  The product info is on the site (tried to copy and paste but it didn't let me).  It is dairy and soy free (And most other things too!!).  Someone on BW emailed company to check suitable from birth and it is, so fine for any age :)

Thanks a lot! Will order it to try! Hope that it would help to heal her gut. I excluded almost all potential allergens from my food, hope this will help...
BTW I've found another probiotic, but they sell it only through authorized health providers, so not easy to purchase... However will post a link here, just in case someone needs: www.klaire.com/probioticleader2.htm

I couldn't find Metagenics infant probiotic without alergens... Maybe you can post the name?
but the funny thing I found Klaire infant probiotic on amazon :) I've read info on their site and this probiotic sounds really cool for me...
also on iherb.com I've found one by Gardens life, it is free of common allergens, but has lots of veggie and fruit ingredients, so probably not very suitable for babies/kids with allergy on some veggies, however they have a list of ingridients, so you can check. This one sounds more like superfood for kids :) an interesting mix!

What about culturelle? Supposed to have one of the best/most resilient strains and I know it's dairy and gluten free. Not sure about soy but would figure easy enough to find out.

forgot to mention also that prebiotics are good too - natural ones are found in bananas, onions, leeks, garlic .... our probiotics should arrive today, but luckily, so far, no sign of an upset tummy from DS (in fact the very opposite, which he NEVER has!!!)

We use Klaire products due to our younger sons many food allergies. They are very clean and must not taste bad as my son, king of reject the supplements, takes them with no issues. If you can find a doctor or naturopath near you, you might look into them.

I've ordered Klaire from amazon, so will give it a try. However after 1,5 week of almost total elimination diet, my DDs poop improved. It's far from perfect seedy poop, but it is not so green as spinach any more and almost no blood. I hope that probiotics will help her gut to heal faster. I don't know why I didn't try this diet before, I was sure that this is not the case, but it seems it is! When doc told me that I have to try hippallergenic formula instead of BM, I understood that I'll try to do everything possible to stick with BM, it is a good stimuli for me :)
BTW I received the message from culturelle, their probiotic is soy free.

Hi just jumping in here - I started giving DD probiotics today as a last attempt to help clear up mucous poos. I'm on strict ED as she seems to have multiple intols and diet alone is just not doing the trick.  Dietitian recommended the metagenics Dairy Free - but I noticed on the label that there is "FOS" in it and I was wondering what it is and whether it should be avoided?  I am reading conflicting things on internet and going around in circles. thanks!

My dd also has a milk protein allergy (and reflux) and I've just started eliminating dairy and obvious sources of soy (not worrying about trace soy right now), and my ped just suggested I take a probiotic as well, so I'm trying to figure out what's best.  DD2 is also ebf, and it never occured to me that I could give her one as she is so tiny.  How old is your bub mianita?

I'm also pretty ignorant about probiotics, and still new to the milk allergy thing - I have one probiotic that has lactobacillus acidophilus in it, and it looks like lactobacillus is a common ingredient in some of the probiotics mentioned in pps - I called the company and they told me that that bacteria is derived from dairy - but since it's not the protein, does that mean it's still safe for me to take?

My DD is almost 6mo. my poor baby was suffering from severe gas and my diet seems to help a lot. however she still has greeny mucusy poop here and there and it's really HARD to underrtand what causing it. now i think it can be celery or some other greens that I eat ((
I also thought that it's only proteins you should be avoiding, but i have no idea on this bacteria. The probiotic which I've ordered doesn't have it, it has other 5 lactobacillus and 5 bifidobacterium. I suppose you can check it on their site www.klaire.com, it's probiotic for infants. and on the bottle it says that it is milk/caseine free (and free of other allergens).

I have noticed in the UK that celery is one of the "allergy information" foods that is labelled on food products (usually if a product contains milk, wheat, gluten, etc it is labelled).  Never realised that celery can be a problem for people, but it must be if it is on the information labels.

It is a good idea to keep a food diary which also marks down your LO's symptoms (including times she is fine) to see patterns, etc
