Title: Baby rice
Post by: Ima shel Alon on July 10, 2011, 15:29:16 pm
About a week ago Introduced apple and it all went well. I decided to start solids earlier than six months as we started having NW after weeks of STTN and I had a feeling it's that.
Today I decided to introduce second food and chose baby rice. I gave 2 spoons of it and DS ate it well. BUT, his poo is so runny, almost looks like diarrhea. I don't know if I should stop with the baby rice and introduce something else, like banana or it's just a matter of time till his stomach gets used to it. Any thoughts?

Usually rice causes constipation but it could just be his system adjusting to it.  When in doubt I always think it's good to err on the safe side and stop it for a bit, then try again later.

no answers, sorry - just reading along before we start our solids next month .... maybe try something else and see how he gets on with that instead? I know lots of people don't bother with baby rice as it doesn't have much nutritional value or something ... There is no rush to try any certain food so if you are a bit unsure it may be best to wait a while then try again.

I think I just needed reassurance to my gut feeling, that if it is not welcomed in his stomach :) then it can wait.
Didn't know about the nutritional value, thanks Lucy.

Just to add to what pp said rice can be skipped altogether if you feel your LO is not tolerating it or doesn't like it.  Recommending rice cereal as one of baby's first foods is a bit outdated, and many moms (including myself) don't bother and just carry on with fruits and vegetables.  :)

One brand of rice caused my guy bad diareah but the other brand is fine...just try something else. This thread helps me too...I feed rice at 2 meals but don't like processed foods and am wondering if he needed it at all!

Hi Toffer, since I posted I also decided to leave it. Honestly didn't know there is no nutritional value to it. I stick to fruit now.

They must get enough iron thru other foods which is why I fed it mostly plus it is easy. My guy loves fruit & veggies so thinking that will give the iron he needs. I don't yet feed rice or potatoes though so will have to start!
