Title: suggestions for food on the go
Post by: JBmommy on November 13, 2011, 22:51:36 pm
Hi everyone!  We have just started our 6-month old on solids at lunchtime and I am looking for suggestions of good foods when you are out and about at feeding time.  We usually eat at home but go out every Wed for a coffee meet-up right at lunchtime.  I am hoping for something pureed since he is still on purees but not too messy since it is hard to clean up in public.  So far, he has had butternut squash (v. messy!) and pears but had a reaction to pears so we stopped that one until he is a bit older.  Any ideas or suggestions for keeping messy feeding under control in public?

I think any puree will be messy until he gets the hang of not spitting some out.  I just try to catch as much with the spoon as possible.  From what I remember from DS1 eating was alwasy pretty messy for quite some time!  What about small chunks of banana or steamed apple?

I agree that all purees will be messy!  I guess I am looking for suggestions on what is less likely to stain or easiest to clean off while we are out so my little guy is not covered in bright orange until we make it home :). My thoughts were apple and banana but a friend mentioned that banana stains so now I am not sure...

Hmm.  Difficult but I would start trying to introduce finger foods at home because within a month he might get it.  When people used to wean earlier, finger foods were introduced at some point between 6 and 8 months.

I've never used them but I have heard people say that those fruit tubes are good, you can just squeeze onto a spoon apparently.  Tbh as pp have said, all mush is tricky because it is so messy.  I found things he *loved* were the best idea for getting in his mouth.  Here's a recipe for fruit purees which can be mixed with yoghurt:

Not sure where you are but the Ella's kitchen tubes are fab for on the go. It does just squeeze a dollop onto the spoon. We still use them now at nearly 2 on the odd occaision  ;)
