Title: when was your lo on 3 meals/day
Post by: *Becky* on November 24, 2011, 13:44:27 pm
I am just interested in this.....

Cannot remember but think DS was 7 months.

DD is nearly 6 and we do 1 meal atm but thinking of going to 2 soon.

We started solids at six months (BLW) and at seven months we were doing breakfast, lunch and a snack rather than dinner, then 3 proper meals by about 7 1/2 months. This was around the time that we dropped the catnap and the timing worked better.

We also started at 6 months but I think it prob takes a good 6 weeks to get up to 3 meals? I guess it depends on how ready your LO is - some are going to be hungrier than others!

We started solids at 5 1/2 months, and one month later we were on 3 meals a day. She was devouring her food, and rather than give her more at each meal, I decided to give her 3 small meals a day. She usually eats 2 oz. at each meal, and sometimes she'll have 1-2 Tbsp. of rice cereal or yogurt with one of the meals.

We started solids at 4 months and were on three meals by 5 months. We had already dropped the CN so timing was never an issue.

I am finding it hard just thinking through when to give them as fitting in 4 bottles, 3 naps and 2 lots of solids is tricky!

I know!! Getting out of the house is also an added extra! I must say it;s convenient for me currently to be early in the process and just on 1-2 meals!

I guess you should remember that till about 9 months (at least) the milk (BM or Formula) intake doesn't change and is the MAIN source of nutrition. So i think generally if you have an issue and run out of time that a skipped meal here or there is ok- as long as you keep the milk up. And i think that by 9 months you can be down to 3 feeds a day if that works...

Remember- 'solids till one is just for fun!'

Becky I did it in conjunction with bottles and when he dropped his milk feeds. So solids started at 6 months and he was not onto 3 meals until 9 months, when he dropped down to 3 bottles.  Partly because as you said there is just no way to fit it all in, and partly because it worked with naps. There is no rush at all, at this stage it is not about how much they are eating or how many times a day they are eating but that they are learning what meal times and solid food is all about.

Different with both -
O started  - first tastes - at 24 weeks, so 5.5 ish mths I think. He wasn't great to begin with...but loved brekkie for sure (I was probably cutting bfeed short in the morning, running to work). It took till 10 mths to have him on 3 square meals....when he dropped two bfs - we were down to am, pm and afternoon by then - having dropped the DF (only then LOL) and the 11am feed quite early (at 7ish months).

E loved solids - both BLW and purees  - from the beginning. I waited till after 6 mths with her but she loved them so much that I did the same as pp and gave her three tiny meals when we were eating as she was gagging for some.....she still loves her food  - don't know where she puts it all!

S x

Strange for you not even 6 month old to be on only one meal? No way! Just take it at your own pace and be happy and confident that your LO is doing great!

M was over 1 before she was interested in breakfast, so she was on two meals for a long time!  E was sooner, but I still think she was 8/9 months before she had breakfast. I have been trying to work out when to start giving x breakfast, but he doesn't seem to be holding out for it at the moment so I am going to leave it for the time being.

My health visitor gave me a proper telling off when I told her that Ben wasn't having 3 full meals at 6.5 months  :o!  I was so relaxed as I new he was getting nearly everything he needed from milk at this stage - he was gaining weight fine (on 90th centile, so hardly cause for concern  :P), and we were doing BLW so it's not an exact science anyway!  I really do think it is so strange that there is this weird expectation that lo's should be going almost overnight from no solids to three meals a day  ???.

WHA!?! I don't understand that.. as far as i can work out the recommendation either say from 6 months, or between 4-6 months WHEN YOUR BABY IS READY!!! I personally was keen to wait till 6 months because i felt that was best for us- but also Hamish was not interested until around 2 weeks ago! When he started grabbing at glasses of water and then a  week later at a banana. when i started him on solids.... For us just shy of 6 months!

Interesting...

oh I am considered very strange round here for not having her on 3 meals. Seriously! One hv told me when M was 4 months that she was probably ready.

Yes Becky I was as well!!!  I just learned to smile and nod and tell people what they wanted to hear or learn to answer in a noncommital way.  How are solids going? Great,  she loves them! How many times a day do you give them to her? As many times as I can! etc etc!!!

yes sounds very familiar! I took M to be weighed when she was about 6 weeks old and I said that she was a bit unsettled and the HV told me it was because I was always holding her!!?? I needed to do CC at which point I nearly choked and just said umm, don't think so and then she tried to back track and it was actually quite funny!

Almost as funny as when H was little and not napping and I knew nothing about BW. The HV told me to lie him on my chest and he would soon drop off!!! Has she met my son! That would be like wrestling a bear just to keep him there.

LOL Mashi - yes I just do that now. Nod and agree.
