Title: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 21, 2011, 17:18:39 pm
My DS will turn one on the 27th.  He is getting 3 top teeth at the moment and is severely constipated (being treated with meds).....2 teeth have broke through the skin last night....not sure if these are the cause of this, that is why I am menitoning it....

Anyway for the past 2 nights he has only drank about 3-4 oz of his bedtime bottle and he normally has 7 oz.  He acts like its poision....does it mean he is ready to drop a bottle or do you think its teething/constipated related?

Here is his schedule.....

wake 7
bottle 7:30 (5oz)
breakfast 8:30
nap 10-12

lunch 12:30
bottle 2 (5oz)
nap 3-4:45

dinner 5/5:30
bottle 7:30/8 (usually 7oz but he wont really drink)
BT 8/8:30

I would be willing to bet it is the teeth... I find that A won't finish her BT bottle if she is teething badly too - she tends to feel the pain more at night once she is already tired and no longer distracted with playing...

He only needs 12-16 ozs of dairy at a year of age and that does include what is in his food too...

How is the bum stuff with him right now?

Thanks Kara.  We are still dealing with this horrible constipation issue!! It was better and he was going like water so we had to back off the meds....I also told the dr that I was feeding him a gluten free diet and she told me not to b/c then we couldnt test for celiac.....So I started incorporating it back into this diet so we can test after the holidays.  Well Monday I fed him wheat pasta and boy am I sorry I did that!!! :(  So, to me, that tells me its pretty probable he does have celiac....I am also being careful not to have too much dairy in his diet either since the dr says that can make it worse as well.  :(

We have remedied the diaper rash for now.  Its like either he's going water or not going...... I wish we could get some answers and I could feed him a normal diet!!!

I can't believe she is actually going to test him for celiac... not many pediatricians actually do the test to be certain... most here suggest a complete gluten free diet with slow reintroduction to determine what is the problem (ie wheat, all gluten etc)..  the actual test is a small bowel biopsy.  My SIL's ped felt it too much to subject my niece to the gluten for the 6 weeks needed to get an accurate test... her reaction to it was enough to make her sure that she did have celiac.  Her reaction was much like Cole's  - OMG.

FWIW - wheat pasta could have caused a celiac response, but it might just be a wheat intolerance.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 22, 2011, 21:36:58 pm
Thanks!!! They told me the test is a blood test.  So he needs to get blood work AGAIN!!!  I would need to not read food labels for 3 weeks and test him after the New Year.  THis doctor is actually a kids GI specialist. I even told them about the reaction he had with the pasta and they said just avoid stuff that I know causes problems....but if its a simple blood test, I guess its ok.  But I am also worried I am not feeding him enough gluten to give accurate results....He does have about 1tsp of oatmeal in his fruits/veggies to thicken it and I give him 1/2 of a nutragrain bar each day.  Do you think that is enough?? Sometimes I do give him cheerios as well but he only eats about 15 at a sitting.

So you think he could just be wheat intolerant?

Also, since I made this post, he refused his bottle before his nap today.....still sound like teething?  He is having stool issues today as well.  :(
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 22, 2011, 21:48:11 pm
The bottle refusal could be either.

The blood test for celiac is just a screening tool, it will tell them whether it is possible that he has celiac.  The only definite answer is a small bowel biopsy to see if there is physical damage to his intestines.

http://www.celiac.ca/index.php/about-celiac-disease-2/symptoms-treatment-cd/

Cheerios are oat based and only contain gluten if they are cross contaminated with wheat products - likely to happen but not guaranteed.  Baby oatmeal cereal is generally labelled to have "trace amounts of wheat/gluten" so again, no guarantee that it has any at all.  Even true oats may/may not be gluten containing...   The Nutragrain bar is wheat based so it could be the wheat or it could be all gluten.

My SIL was told by her specialist to eliminate completely then overload with whatever you are testing for with allergies/intolerances so that you get a very clear answer as to what caused the issue...

How long did she have to completely eliminate for?

What is a bowel biopsy??

So you are telling me that the diet I am feeding him may give me inconclusive on the bloodwork?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

So you are telling me that the diet I am feeding him may give me inconclusive on the bloodwork?

Any diet may lead to an inconclusive blood test.

The small bowel biopsy is surgery to remove a small piece of his bowel and have a look at it under a microscope for holes that occur when you have celiac and consume gluten.

Elimination is best done for 6 weeks with a massive reintro for 2-3 days.  Give the testing item a few times a day in large amounts...

Well he is getting worse! :( So they want me to do the bloodwork now.  I guess I will take him tomorrow. They said if the bloodtest comes back with abnormalities then they would do the biopsy to confirm since the diet is so strict.

This is horrible!! :(  I hate that he has to go through all this!!!

Huge hugs hun!  It's awful for him to go through it but it's better that you find out now than years down the road...

Yeah I know, I just wish they could figure it out already.  :(
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 28, 2011, 16:16:15 pm
Ok Kara,
Help me....is it enough milk for him to have 5.5 oz am and then 7oz at BT?  Seems like since I have dropped the afternoon bottle his bowels are getting worse even after all this medicine he is on.  He does drink about 3 sippy cups (5oz) full of water with a little juice a day.  Shouldnt that be enough liquid??

Also, what do I do now to replace that nutrition of that afternoon bottle.  What can I feed him?? Here is his schedule now...

WU 7/7:15
bottle 5.5 oz 7:30/40
breakfast 8:30/40 (1 jar fruit and 1/2 nutragrain bar)

Lunch 12:30/1  (1 jar veggies, small portion of protein and fruit)

3/3:30 (fruit melts and baby mums)

dinner 5/5:30 (same as lunch)

bottle 7oz 8pm

I am trying to stay away from alot of gluten b/c I think that is causing some of the bowel issues. (bloodwork for celiac is supposed to come back this week)

Also, What else could be causing the constipation??

Per GI recommendations, he is still on formula and not cows milk since that tends to make constipation worse.....but they advised to switch to toddler formula.....so he is on Good start and I started mixing his am bottle 1/2 GS and 1/2 (enfamil gentelease toddler) that was yesterday....you think that is ok??
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 28, 2011, 17:58:06 pm
I think the change to the toddler milk could be the reason for the change in pooping for sure... any change to their formula can cause issues...  Why did they want to move him to toddler formula?

Wow - he drinks a tonne of water!  Alexandra is down to 16 ozs of formula most days (when not teething) and she drinks about 4-5 ozs of water with a little bit of juice in it each day - she isn't constipated at all...

Have you tried moving him from jarred food to table foods?  I have found that too much jarred food causes issues for Alexandra - I assume it's the lack of real fibre that fresh/steamed veggies/fruits have.

Gluten issues will generally manifest as loose poops.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 28, 2011, 19:29:29 pm
Well, I just started the toddler formula yesterday and he has been getting worse over the last 5 days or so, so not sure that is it..... I just think they think the toddler formula is better nutrition after age one.

I dont feel like I have good control over how much he eats when he has table food....but I guess I can try to do more table food.  What kinds of veggies do you feed A?  Canned or fresh??  He just doenst like them and they are hard to chew.  LOL

The GI office just called me and his bloodwork is normal.....so now they want to see him again and possibly do another xray and talk about our next option....
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

Great news that his bloodwork is normal - but not good that we still don't know what is going on!  Sigh...

I dont feel like I have good control over how much he eats when he has table food....but I guess I can try to do more table food.  What kinds of veggies do you feed A?  Canned or fresh??  He just doenst like them and they are hard to chew.

Why do you need control?  He knows what he needs ;)  I feed Alexandra whatever I can find!  I cut everything into bit sized pieces for her and she does fine!

Her faves are:
bananas
apples (i cut them up and then drop into boiling water for about a minute to soften them
ripe pears (no prep!)
avocado (no prep!)
grapes (cut into quarters)
steamed carrots/yams/broccoli
cheese
pasta - I find she does best with macaroni/penne shapes... macaroni doesn't need cut but I do halve the penne
bread/toast - sometimes she wants bite sized bits other times, she will bite it herself...
yogurt (I buy the little Danino ones for her)

The only jarred/canned thing I buy is mandarin orange segments cause they don't have the skin on them ;)

She also eats chicken/ham if I cut it into bite sized bits...

And of course, the usual gerber puffs/mum mums/arrowroot cookies/yogurt bites...

She is really into sandwiches right now and her fave is cream cheese and apple (I use it right from the fridge, just grate it with the cheese grater)... you could sub for the dairy though!  Or how about a tuna sandwich ;)

Wow, thanks Kara.....

I just feel like he needs certain amounts of certain things to help him be regular.  :)  But I have been feeding him a ton of fruits and veggies lately and hardly any grains and he is so constipated its ridiculous....I am going to talk to my GI tomorrow and see if she thinks it could be a dairy allergy again....I just think since the blood work came back negative for gluten/wheat intolerance that may be our next experiment.  NOw that he is old enough to be on cows milk maybe I could try soy milk....

How many teeth does A have?  Cole has 5.  :)

Kara can you give me a sample A's feeding routine??
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 29, 2011, 20:27:19 pm
She has 8 teeth now :)  Just cut the last one on Boxing Day :)

This is her typical day:

Wake 630am - 4 ozs
Breakfast 8/830am - usually a yogurt, Cheerios, fresh fruit OR baby cereal/fruit
Morning snack 1030am - cheese, crackers, veggie puffs
Bottle 1130am - 4 ozs
Nap 1145-2pm
Lunch 230pm - usually sandwich, fresh fruit, steamed veggies (I cook a bit extra at dinner time to use for her lunch) or grab a few frozen florets of broccoli and nuke them to heat up quickly. If we are out, I will take a jar of something like veggies/pasta
Afternoon snack (not every day, just if she is super starving)- half a banana OR Nutragrain bar
Dinner 5pm (or 530 if she had a snack) - whatever we are having if DH is home... otherwise I give her a jar of veggies/meat and then finger foods like grapes/banana/orange sections

If she eats a decent dinner, I let her have an arrowroot cookie for dessert ;)

Bottle at 715 - offer 9 ozs and she usually drinks it all - always at least 7 ozs though...
Bed 730pm.

Ok, thanks.  So she still has 3 bottles a day then?  That worries me about Cole....he only has 2 and its barely 12oz total and I rarely feed him dairy otherwise b/c I have heard it makes contipation worse.....

He doesnt act starving though... :)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 29, 2011, 20:35:27 pm
She does have 3 a day now... I have tried a couple of times to drop her first one and she gets wicked upset... going to try again once this tooth stops causing her issues ;)

I worried about dairy with Alexandra too and the whole constipation thing... yogurt generally won't be an issue and neither will most other things in moderation :)

Well what the heck is causing him to be so stopped up right now then?? :(  I am trying for the life of me to figure it out and I cant.....He started to get worse last week once he dropped that afternoon bottle.....

No idea hun... Have they done an ultrasound recently?

Have you been giving any pain meds?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

THey are doing another xray tomorrow... should I suggest and ultrasound?

Yes, I give him ibuprofen at BT and when he wakes in the middle of the night.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 29, 2011, 23:45:23 pm
Ibuprofen is incredibly constipating... stop giving it... I find that Alexandra will get backed up if she has more than 2 doses for more than a day or two in a row.

Post by: mjohnson33 on December 29, 2011, 23:56:36 pm
Omg I never knew! ! I have been giving it to him only at night though. Would it really make it that bad?? Even w all the stool softeners he is taking?  I will stop tonight.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 30, 2011, 03:59:03 am
Totally could be hun... Alexandra gets really backed up fast with it... I am certain that it is the main reason she got so backed up in July without me knowing... I thought she had teething pain, so I would medicate her and then it would mask the pain from the constipation...

She is cutting a tooth right now actually so I have been medicating her on and off for a week or so now (it started to cut on the 26th but it was bad a couple of days before that)... she was a little unhappy with her pooping this morning... she had 2 full doses yesterday plus a half dose mid day... she is fine with two full doses, but the extra half dose will get her every single time.

Yeah, I gave it on and off for over a month right before A got incredibly sick in July...

LMK what happens with the specialist!

Just left specialist appt. He is so backed up it's worse than before!! She wants me to do 1 cap of moralax 5 times a day for the next 2 days plus 5ml of senna (laxative)  twice a day. If it doesn't work they will have to admit him and get it out for him!!! I am so worried about him. Please keep us in ur thoughts!! :-)

Oh hun!  HUGE HUGS to both of you!

Poor Cole - I will keep him in my thoughts for sure... let me know how he does with the increase.  Any insights from the dr about what is going on??

thanks so much!!  She said she doesn't even want to worry about that right now until we get him cleaned out. Then after he's ok we can start to figure things out.

Thanks Kara!! I will definitely keep u posted on his progress.  So far he has had 2 caps of miralax and its already watery but the Dr said that's just getting around the hard stuff. Its very compacted in there. :(
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

I do know that Miralax can take up to 5 days to clear an impaction hun, so hang in there!

They told me to give him a suppository and it didn't work. :-( I don't know what to think...
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 31, 2011, 04:43:51 am
Give it a few hours and try again :)  The poop has to be moved down quite low for a suppository to have an effect...

Did you manage to keep it in him for at least 20 mins?  It can be tough, but it can take that long to work when they are horribly backed up...

Have they ever done an enema on him to get things cleared out quickly?  That's what the dr did with Alexandra the first trip to the ER.. a Fleet enema (you can get them at the drugstore, just use half of the liquid) and then three consecutive days of glycerin suppositories to get her all sparkly on the inside ;)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 31, 2011, 04:47:26 am
I used the baby lax version of the glycerine since the pop right out. This is more effective for us. He is sleeping now but will evaluate better on the morning. I may have to try the enema...u think the miralax and senna will work better tomorrow though?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 31, 2011, 17:04:42 pm
Kara, I need your advice....I ended up doing the enema this morning and all that came out was brown water....the nurse practitioner thinks there is a blockage in there keeping him from getting everything out.  Do you think eventually the miralax is going to start working?? I am having trouble getting him to drink enough of it today and he is barely eating.  :(
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 31, 2011, 20:13:54 pm
The miralax will clear a blockage but it can take up to 5 days to do it... since he isn't drinking much, have you tried using his fav puree and mixing the miralax into that?  I had to do that with A a few times... I could easily get 2 tsp mixed into a tsp of puree... I'm sure you could get a whole capful into a tbsp!  I did find that it made the puree runnier though so don't use anything that is already really runny!  Does he like jarred peas?  They are fairly thick on their own...

How long did he hold the enema before he let go?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 31, 2011, 21:03:42 pm
Ok thanks. Problem is he isn't eating anything but crackers. Dr told me just let it go and hopefully we got enough meds in him to Move things.he kept the enema in for about 5 minutes. Hopefully reducing the meds males him feel better and start to eat!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on December 31, 2011, 21:10:52 pm
Poor guy... 5 mins isn't long at all for an enema... A held it for 15 mins in the hospital ;)  That was messy!

I would stay away from crackers - they will only add to the constipation hun... I would just offer a bit of jarred beans, pears... both gentle and easy to digest... he will eat when he is ready...
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on December 31, 2011, 21:14:29 pm
Yeah I wasn't thrilled about the crackers by that's all I could get him to eat. He is actually eating right now!! He had half jar of pears and eating some sausage now!! Whew!!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

YAY!  That's awesome!  the fat in the sausage might help lube things up a bit ;)  Might be a good idea to stand back ;)

Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

Just a little last night. I was able to get a 4 oz bottle in before bed and he just had 6oz this morning!! So hopefully that helps. I am gonna try to feed him some fiberous jar food this morning too. He was pushing and farting before we got up. Not sure if that'd good or bad....
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 01, 2012, 21:41:52 pm
Be careful with the high fibre foods if he isn't taking in much liquid to help digest the fibre... it can constipate him more... I would stick to things like pears, really ripe bananas (like soft and skins are mostly brown), peaches, apricots...

And of course, water/juice... will he drink pear juice?  It can be more effective than prune juice for pooper issues!

I would think that pushing and farting are signs that things are moving in the right direction :)

He has gone 3 times today!! I am so happy!! What do u recommend for keeping things moving?  I am hoping to avoid this hospital mess!!

He is now drinking and eating like normal! :)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 02, 2012, 04:27:09 am
FANTASTIC!!!  That's so great!

As long as he is eating and drinking like normal, things are much improved...

I would try to get some ripe pears (or green ones and leave them in a paper bag for a day or so to speed them up!)... give him cubes with every meal and with snacks too... A loves them and they are great for keeping things moving... grapes are another one that is good for the pooper!  I cut them into quarters and she has done great with them for month or more now.. Super ripe bananas are fine too...

I would avoid - high fibre things like peas, prunes, and cereals for now... unless he is drinking a good amount of water (at least 2 ozs with a meal)...   also, apples and carrots can cause things to slow down so limit them too.

Ok sounds good. I am going to keep pumping him full of meds too until he starts going real watery. He really has a thirst....he's been having at least 2oz w each meal or right after. I've been trying to give him a little more jukce too to entice the consumption.  I hope this works!!!

LOL!  I have found that Alexandra will drain her sippy if I use about 2 ozs of Happy Planet Apricot/Peach with the water ;)

I also wanted to ask u....he's not really pooping anything hard...does that come in time of is it possible the meds softened it up?? Dr said he's literally full of poop....so it could take a while to clean out right?

He kept waking this morning and crying so I can only imagine his belly hurt. So I gave him a suppository and he filled a diaper!! Is there any foods I should stay away from? I figured I would b safe w meats veggies and fruits....minus carrots and bananas....hopefully that suppository cleared some things out.

Re: no hard poops - the Miralax works by drawing water into his bowels so it will soften what is in there :)

I would avoid red meat/pork as they are hard to digest... applesauce is constipating...

YAY for the suppository doing some good work!  I would do it again tomorrow morning ;)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

Ok great!  He had 2 really good full diapers after the suppository and now its back to alot of water mixed with a little poop. I guess it comes in waves??

I will have to get more suppositories as I used my last one today. I use the liquid ones BC anytime I have tried the cone sahpe one they come right back out.  Is there a trick to getting them to stay in?  Btw, this is all very traumatic for him and I hate doing it!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 03, 2012, 04:40:59 am
LOL!  There is a trick to the glycerine ones ;)  I learned how to do it when A was in the hospital - the doc there was awesome!

Easiest way to do it is to lie him on his back - have a few toys/books to amuse him while it melts... I used to put A on our bed novelty and something different for her to look at).  Lay him on his back and pull his feet up towards his face... this will make his little bum easily accessible... push it in slowly - all the way... once you get to the very end of it, give it a little wiggle and push it in past his anus... wait a few seconds to see if you got it right in... if you did, it will stay put, if not, it will start to come out... push it back in and wiggle again... the wiggle stimulates the rectal muscles to relax :)  It helps to squeeze his little bum cheeks together and push upwards too just to be sure it is in past his anus...

Put his diaper back on - I always just had A laying on top of one so that I could easily pull it up and fasten it without moving her too much... I found that keeping her on her back and playing with toys or reading books above her worked best.

Well, that would be great it Cole didnt think I was killing him!! :(  As soon as I touch his butt he knows what is happening.  He starts screaming bloody murder and tightens his butt before I even put it in there.  :(  He even hates diaper changes now.  As soon as I go to take him in there he freaks out thinking I am going to torture him!! :(  Poor baby!!!!  I didnt give him one this morning...I am going to wait and see how his day is with my mom and then if he doesnt go I will give him a suppository after I get off work.  I hate being away from him when he is sick.  :(

Also, wanted to add...yesterday, he filled two diapers like I mentioned before in the morning. Then just two little squirts after that, then no more after about 3pm.....is that wierd??

Today, he went one time so far....my mom said it was about the size of your first and kinda hard (which I imagine is old poop).  So thats good he went without the suppository.  I gave him 4tsp of miralax in am bottle with 7ml of lactulose (Its a liquid medicine like miralax that I feel is more effective than the miralax) I am still giving him the laxative at night as well.  Anyway, my question is do you think I should give him a suppository at night?? Its hard for me to do in the morning b/c of time and I hate to leave him after I do it to go to work.  If he only goes today like yesterday should I give him a suppository in the pm?

Also, I tried grapes and he doesnt like them!!!!  What a wierdo!! LOL

Who doesn't love grapes!  Weird kid LOL!

I would still do the supp as night as it might help him sleep better if there are not poops to bug him, KWIM?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

Gotcha!!!  I just hate to torture him with the supp if I dont have to!! :(  Do you think he still needs assistance to get out the poop of a supp??  How does it actually work??

What is your take on the stimulant laxative?? The doctor wants me to give it at night but I wonder if first thing in the morning would be better......so then he could work on the poop all day vs at night when he is trying to sleep???  But then maybe all the other medicine would be too much during the day too??

Thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it, I think things are starting to move....if he continues to go like this then I will wait a few more days and get an xray on friday to see how he is doing on clearing out. Hope I am not bothering you...

So out of the 4 times he went yesterday, two were good consistency and the other 2(later ones) were alot of water mixed with a little poop.....what do you think about that??

Also do you think its best for the suppository right when I get off work around 5pm or wait closer to bedtime??
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 03, 2012, 20:45:55 pm
Don't think you are bothering me for one moment!!  I truely remember the anxiety that I had over this and A was nowhere near as backed up as Cole is... this site it all about supporting each other hun and I am happy to be your sounding board!

I would think that the good consistency ones were poops that were soften by the laxatives and the watery/bits were not affected by them yet...   or it could mean that the water being drawn into his bowels has nothing to clear out :)

Suppositories work by softening the stool that is in the rectum already... anything higher up isn't affected by them... They also have a physical stimulation effect on the rectal muscles that can help them feel the sensation to push those poops out!  I haven't found that they have any effect of A's sleep so you could do it an hour or so before bedtime - this would give him time to forget the trauma too!

I'm not a huge fan of stimulant laxatives at all in general, but if Cole is that backed up that the dr wants you to use them, then I would think that early evening would be best... you don't want to give it and have him get tummy cramps while trying to sleep and then being woken by a poop... early evening would give it a chance to work (they are generally fast-acting) and then you could use his bath to help calm his tummy muscles so that he can sleep well.

YOu are right, this feeling of anxiety is HORRIBLE!!! I really dont want to torture him with the hospital thing.....

So he went again today, that makes twice....the second time was alot of water with bits of poop....I am not sure how to proceed now with the rest of the day....I did have her give him more of the lactulose (miralax like) medicine about an hour before he pooped....she said she could see in his face when he was going.....I just dont want to do the trauma of the supp if its not going to do anything....but I guess I just need to try tonight and see??? Otherwise, I wont know, then tomorrow if everything is the same then I know that the supp will/wont work at night....

REgarding the laxative...she advised right at BT for the medicine....maybe I should try it earlier like when I get off work?? It NEVER produces a bowel movement over the night time.....which shocks me.  He has been taking this for almost a month at BT minus about a weeks time....

How big do you think their colon is at this age?  I wonder how long its going to take him to get clear.....I will know right?? He will start pooping straight water right?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 03, 2012, 21:08:59 pm
I don't think he will poop straight water but he will be quite cranky and crampy when he is cleaned out and still getting laxatives ;)

If the stimulant doesn't make him poop overnight, then I would just give it at bedtime :)

I would try the supp tonight and see what happens...

as for the size of a colon - found this link:  http://www.ajronline.org/content/133/4/683.full.pdf

Looks like it's about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 cups... but he likely had poop backed up into his intestines too...
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 03, 2012, 21:17:56 pm
Ok, I will keep an eye on him.  And give keep the stimulant at night....if he has had good BM during the day it doesnt seem to bother him at night.  Its when he doesnt go much that we have bad nights...

I will try the supp before bath time tonight, that way he can have some distractions afterwards.  :(

Yes, I am pretty sure he is backed into his intestines, the xray showed it all the way up....but sounds like he has maybe emptied his colon so far.  :)

Also, he must be feeling better b/c he is eating back to normal and for 2 days now he has taken that afternoon bottle again!!!! YAY!!!

That's so great!  Hopefully that Miralax/lactulose get things softened up in the intestines so that they can get out too!

Last question....so when I start to notice alot more water and less poop for a few days is it safe to say things are good??  I will still get the xray for confirmation though....

So I gave him the Supp and he filled a diaper  w perfect mushy poop! What do u make of that?? Do I continue giving him a Supp for a few night? Does that cause any harm?? Today his poop went from thick and sticky first diaper to watery w little bits at second diaper to soft and must third diaper....how could it change so much in a day? ;-)

Also I wondered if too much  protein can constipated? I have backed off alot in the last week but he does love meat...I am now giving him 1 Turkey sausage link a day and about a tbsp of chicken a day...
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 04, 2012, 05:46:48 am
I would think he is fine with that bit of meat - I would just stay away from beef and pork for now... poultry is easy to digest.

I would use the supp for another day (so total of 3 in a row) and then stop.  That's what we did with A... the ER doctor told us that there is no need to worry about using them occasionally in the future... and she was the one that prescribed the 3 in a row to clean her out after the enema...   and prescribed the Miralax too!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 04, 2012, 14:37:30 pm
Ok, I will do another supp tonight.  I just didnt want to do any harm by continuing to do them.  Do you know why he would be pooping clay like sticky poop in the am then the watery bits in the afternoon and then after I do the supp he goes perfect consistency??  Do you think he would have gone without the supp??  I just dont want him to get dependant on the assistance....

Then last night was a horrible night.....he tossed and turned all night and cried out....do you think the stimulant was giving him cramps??  I know the poop wasnt causing him pain b/c he did get so much out before bed.

I feel so horrible for him, this is so crazy!!! :(

Do you think I should go ahead and get it now or wait a few more days to try and get more out?? I was going to call the dr this morning and see what they think.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 04, 2012, 20:46:08 pm
I would check with the dr about timing of the x-ray... you don't want to do too many of them, KWIM?

Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 04, 2012, 20:56:00 pm
I just talked to her and she said either tomorrow or Friday for the xray.  So thats what we will do.  The sitter said he had a great diaper this afternoon!!! Yay!!!  I hope this is working!! I am going to do one more torture of the suppository tonight unless he goes more before then.

She also said that we can maybe change the meds after seeing the xray....but doesnt want to do anything until we see that.  I just know last night was horrible for him and I hate giving him that stupid stimulant but I also dont want him getting backed up again before he is cleaned out....such a double edged sword.

Ok Kara,
Just spoke with doctor....his xray is much improved!!!  He is clearing things out.  So she wants me to continue the medicines for the next 2 weeks and then get another xray and we can discuss where to go from there once has has things moving regularly.....

So thats great news!!! Now I can only hope that things keep improving!!!  Now I know based on his actions when he is getting backed up, so that helps!!!

Such a huge relief to know that it is all working and things are on the move!

Yeah tell me about it!! I have been so stressed these last few days wondering what was going to happen!!!  I am very thankful to have you as well!!!

Now I know what to look for in him to know he is getting bad and can prevent that from happening again!!! I will keep the supps on hand just in case!! :)

Should I just continue to feed him the way I have been for the next two weeks to be safe??

Here is his eating:
7:30 5oz bottle
8:30 1 jar baby food mixed with 2 tbsp oatmeal cereal (fruit, at least 100 calories)

12:30 1 jar veggies(fiberous), 1 turkey sausage or chicken, 1 cup of fruit (pineapple or peaches)
2:30 5oz bottle

5:00 1 jar veggies(fiberous), sausage or chicken, fruit (blueberries or peaches or baby food fruit) and yogurt bites if he is still hungry

7:30 7 oz bottle

The last 2 nights he hasnt wanted as much in the BT bottle, is that ok??  Like he drinks maybe 6oz.....should I worry or not since the xray is good??
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 05, 2012, 21:02:28 pm
I wouldn't worry about the bedtime bottle at all... an ounce of formula is only about 20 calories - he could make that up with an extra bite of chicken ;)  I would just make sure that he has his water/juice sippy around all the time and let him drink what he needs...

I would keep the food plan the same since it seems to be working!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 05, 2012, 21:07:31 pm
Ok, what is your take on a dairy intolerance??  Do you think I should experiement with soy or coconut milk to see if it helps?? I would hate to torture him with the formula for 2 more weeks if its that easy to fix....I really dont/havent fed him much other dairy since all this has happened...

I just worry that he isnt getting enough carbs.....I really dont feed him any???
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 05, 2012, 21:20:50 pm
If it is a dairy issue, soy could give the same result... very common to have a problem with both not just one...   I don't know much about other kinds of milk - maybe a post on allergies and intolerances is a good idea!

He is getting lots of carbs - just not the simple carbs you are thinking of like white pasta/rice/bread ;)  Fruits and veggies are full of carbs.

Ok, I did post on the intolerance board they suggested coconut milk.  Do you think I should try it now or wait until I take him back to the doctor??

I will keep his diet the same for now.  :)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 05, 2012, 21:28:01 pm
I would check with the dr first re the coconut milk - it doesn't have the nutrients that formula has...

Ok, I will talk more on the intolerance board as well.  I am sure that he really doesnt need formula anymore anyway right?? NOw that he is one??

Given his diet right now, I would keep him on formula, IIWM.

So the last two days I have been having trouble getting him to drink bottles again. If I didn't just get an xray I would think its his belly but its not.  He does have a tooth about to pop but his behavior is really odd. I have to hold him down and shove the bottle in there while he's screaming and as soon as he tastes it he drinks it. Tonight he kept stopping and I would have to do it all over again...I finally stopped when there was 2oz left.  Does this sound like teething?? Also, he got shots this afternoon at his 1 yr checkup.:(
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 07, 2012, 04:52:23 am
Not to me hun... Alexandra is fine to drink a bottle when teething, she just screams when she releases her latch on it...

If his tooth is about to pop though, it could be that for sure!  Rub those gums before you offer a bottle... and stop forcing it :)  He will just get an aversion that will be reallly hard to overcome.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 07, 2012, 15:32:47 pm
Well he didn't want it at all this morning and I didn't force it. Then he saw his zippy and wanted it to I put the formula in there and he made this face like it rated like poision ....but I put water and juice in there and he's drinking it. Guess I wont give him formula then!!!!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

LOL!  Alexandra doesn't like milk in any form in her sippy either... water/juice is fine though ;)
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

So do I need to be concerned that he's not taking any milk? Yesterday he only had 9 oz.  Today none! Nut on the other side of things he pooped two good poops today! ! Is that a coincidence?? I am really thinking its dairy intolerance!
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 07, 2012, 20:49:39 pm
I would be concerned - he needs the calcium and the fat for sure... and the vit D that milk has.  I would talk to the ped about it for sure...
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 07, 2012, 21:17:55 pm
Should I call the exchange? The are closed for the weekend...I am gonna buy some soy milk today and see if he likes it.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 07, 2012, 22:03:24 pm
I would hold off on soy milk - if it is a milk protein issue, the soy will likely have the same effect.  The proteins are very similar and most kids who can't tolerate dairy are the same way with soy.

I would just try to get some formula into him - will he eat baby cereal made with it?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 08, 2012, 17:15:03 pm
I bought the soy milk per my pedi instructions....everyone that i know that's children have a milk protein intolerance do just fine on soy.  He only drank 2 oz this morning of it and didnt want anymore.  Its really good too, I tasted it so its not the taste.....

So, I will call the doctor tomorrow to see what I need to do to make up for the decrease in intake.  Maybe there is a supplement I can give him...

On a different note...his poops have been way better since he has decreased his milk intake...is that a coincidence you think?
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: *Kara* on January 08, 2012, 21:26:40 pm
I would bet it is tied together for sure!

Weird that your ped would suggest soy - the AAP doesn't recommend soy in the case of a suspected milk allergy at all.  They recommend HAF specifically.

Makes me wonder if it is the lactose, not the milk proteins??
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 08, 2012, 22:34:22 pm
Yeah its probably the lactose....that's what he thinks.  He is getting some of the soy too but its really not enough to make a difference I don't think.  Maybe 5 oz a day so far. :(

He took a 5oz bottle last night and another this morning!!! Yay!!! I have been rubbing orajel on his gums before every bottle and finally last night he caved!!! This is all of the soy milk.  So he is really going poop good too!!! HOpe it continues!! I will be angry if it was this easy to fix all along and he has been suffering all this time!! But happy at the same time that we finally fixed it.  Keep your fingers crossed for us!!! :)

Kara,
So last night I got brave and decided to stop the stimulant(over the last four days I have slowly decreased it) and guess what?? Nice full diaper this morning and another this afternoon.  Consistency like it should be too!!! I am so happy!!! But I am still having issues with him getting enough of the soy milk.  He just doesnt want it, in a bottle or a sippy.  Last night he only had 3 oz before bed making the total 12 oz for the day which I am ok with but only 3 oz before bed when he would normally drink 7...he has be be starving when he wakes right??

Then so far today he has had 5oz first thing and then 2oz this afternoon...hopefully I can get him to drink 5 oz tonight.  But I did purchase soy yogurt yesterday and HE LOVES IT!!!! :0
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old

Good news but I would check with the ped re: milk vs formula with soy... I think you are supposed to use formula longer than the standard 1 year of age when it comes to soy???   And, I wouldn't overload him with soy - there are crazy estrogens in soy that can mess with a little boys hormones.
Title: Re: milk intake for 1 year old
Post by: mjohnson33 on January 11, 2012, 00:18:32 am
Well he's only getting about 10oz of soy milk and 1/2 container of yogurt a day. Dr isn't concernied that is enough to mess w hormones. I may switch to almond milk soon just to avoid the soy.

Aww, I did read your post after your reply.  Poor baby!!!

I will follow that post to see how things are going.  I am going to try the almond milk when this soy is out probably tomorrow.  I am really worried about the hormones and I dont want to chance it even though his pedi said its ok.

Great thanks.  I will give it a shot.  He is starting to drink a little more milk.. I was able to get him to take a 6 oz bottle this morning.  He had 4 oz of soy(just finishing the half gallon) and 2 oz of almond.  That stuff is yummy!!! :)
