Title: 8 month old doesn't eat any solids still - purees or finger food
Post by: gotsikat on January 21, 2012, 17:42:32 pm
My 8 month old son refuses to eat any solids: purees or finger food.  He clamps his lips closed & refuses anything (veg, meat, blends, finger food).  On the rare occasion he allows anything past his lips he has a strong gag reflex and just throws it all up again.  The only exception is baby porridge and apple/pear.  That's all he'll take & then even only 1/2 an ice-cube's worth a day.  Should I be worried?  He loves his milk (formula), but his weight's platoed.  Any tips/advice appreciated.  Thanks!

I'd talk to your health visitor or doctor.  I'm sure it can be completely normal for some kids to start a bit later but it's probably worth checking there's nothing else wrong just to set your mind at ease.

What else could be wrong, my lo similar and 31 weeks. He is a silent refluxer.

There you go, as dizzy said, maybe that's the issue.  Reflux is like heartburn isn't it?  So if you're getting heartburn every time you eat, it would put you off a bit!  It might be nothing at all but it can't hurt to check.

Also it's worth remembering that only a teaspoon full is plenty for some kids.  Also he might just not like being fed but not be totally co-ordinated enough for BLW yet?  Have you tried just eating with him on your lap then he can have some if he wants it?  Obviously make sure it's not something he couldn't have.
