Title: When to introduce baby rice?
Post by: HenaV on February 01, 2012, 17:46:22 pm
My DD is weaning well. We are following BW weaning guidelines and it is going well. We are on week 5 - the introduction of porridge. Ina couple of the books rice cereal is refered to as well as oatmeal. Oatmeal clearly being porridge? When should rice cereal / baby rice be introduced.

The BW guidance suggests mixing oatmeal and sweet potato next week - is that porridge and sweet potato? Is that right or should sweet potato be mixed with baby rice???

Help? ???

Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't bother with reice ceral if you are on week 5 already. There are lots of other lovely foods your LO could be having  :D. Rice cereal often can bung a LO up  :-X

Great, thanks for that! Porridge and sweet pots it is then! You're right, there are lots of lovley foods that are going down an absolute treat, especially pears and butternut squash!

I'd only be wary if you have started before 6 months as gluten isn't recommended before 6 months (in the UK anyway) and oats are almost always cross contaminated with gluten from wheat.

If it is after 6 months, then it sounds like an "interesting" combo!  No reason not to serve them separately IMO and also then you can freeze the sweet potato if you make a big batch.

Hi!

I didn't start her on solids before 6m. The rice cereal and porridge I looked at is Organix and it says that it is gluten free - is that likely not to be the case.

DD started on peaches a couple of days ago and seems to be struggling to have a poo, and when she does it is lumpy. I'm a bit suprised that it is having that effect - or could it be something else - or is that normal at her age (7m 1wk)

Thanks

I thought peaches had the opposite effect tbh! Is there something else in her diet that could be causing a bit of constipation?

Me too! Everything else she has had is a 'proven food' so I can't think that any of would cause a problem.

As per the BW weaning guidance - she is having 2 lots of cereal a day - porridge+pears one meal and i couldn't face giving her porridge and squash so i've given her 4 grain rice cereal - she had that last week (before peaches) no problems at all??

I don't get it!

It could just be her little tummy getting used to having solid foods in it and having to digest in a different way.

I'm sure that's probably right. Whatever was causing the blockage has unblocked itself in a big way - probably far too much information - but much to my relief and before BT, yeah!!!!

Thanks a million
