Title: Introduction of Water - how much do you give?
Post by: JudyLee on May 23, 2012, 02:42:44 am
Six months is amazingly coming up and reading Tracey's words- a sippy cup is a good thing to introduce and also water.
But how much water do you want them to take - so that they don't lose out on bf and solids...?

When I started giving my girls water in a sippy it was 1 oz ( I started at 5 months though), not to much so they don't have problems holding the sippy cup own their own. Most of it gets on them not in them for the first few weeks anyways. My almost 7 month old has 3 oz in her sippy cups now she drinks about 1 oz, gets 1 oz all over her and the last oz stays in the cup. I give it to her after she is done eating her solids and it has never affect the amount of milk she drinks or solids she eats.

Thanks lilybug25!
Gave her the sippy cup yesterday;empty, and she loved it. Held on with both hands and chomped away. Here's hoping it will be as successful with water in it :)

Just remember to give it to her every single day, I did 3x a day (after every *meal*) now my baby is a champ with a sippy :)

Can I jump in here with a quick question?  My DD likes to play with the sippy cup but, even though she is getting better at it, it is still hard for her to tip it up all the way to drink.  I know I could put less in it, but isn't sucking on a mostly empty cup going to give her a lot of air?  She has always been a very gassy/burping baby so she doesn't need any extra air! ;)

Rebekah - I actually found when L was starting out with a sippy she found it much better when there was only a little water in it (e.g. 1-2 oz max) and didn't take in air.  I know others have found this too although it's a bit counter-intuitive to me since they have to tip it further..  Perhaps try it out with less water a few times and see if it helps?

Thanks, Catherine!  I'll have to try that! :)  It's good to know I wasn't the only one confused about it. Whatever works, right?! ;)

I found he only took sips from a sippy cup anyway so it wasn't a problem him having too much.  Just keep it as just water.  I was recommended to introduce with solids as they need more liquid then to avoid poos becoming too firm.

Ha ha ha!  Don't worry, I remember the whole milk feeding side (I BF) to be a big minefield.  I found in the end that no book gave any kind of routine that worked for my son (BW included) because he was a hungry yet incredibly distractible boy.  It's all a learning curve.

From my limited experience most people worry their child isn't having enough water so end up putting diluted fruit juice in a cup which IMO is a slippery slope.  Best for teeth just to give water and milk and nothing else if you can manage it.

Yeah I'd be quite chilled out about it.  My son certainly carried on breastfeeding happily for a further 7 months without too many issues!
