just wondering when i should be aiming to introduce solids to my almost 6mo? before or after breastfeeds?!her current feeds are 7.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm & 7pm, then dreamfeed at 10.30pm.
-
Hi there, def offer solids after breast milk, until 12mo milk is their primary source of nutrition, solids are for "fun" as such, at least at such a young age they are :) I found the Annabel Karmel meal planner v helpful for what to feed my babies :)
-
ya,i've been reading up on that, but wanted some BW advice too!!!so would you start with food after the 7.30am feed or 11.30am?
-
Hi there, I think I started after the 11am feed. For me breakfast was a bit earlyin the day for somehting so new and dinner was too late to see any reactions. HTH x
-
so do you feed first?then give solids straight after?sorry for being so clueless!!!
-
Milk first then solids an hour later. Then She should be hungry enough again to want to try the solids!
-
Check out the wholesome baby food web site (sorry I don't know how to link on my phone). It helped us a lot!
-
thanks ladies!no doubt i'll be back again with more questions very soon!!!how did mammies manage before there was internet?! :)
-
we intro'd new foods at 8am every day (bf at 7am) for three days - if no reaction, we moved these foods to lunch at 12noon and intro'd more new in the morning....
didn't give any solids at teatime till around 7mths I think, once we had a good base for what to give/not to give.

good idea shivi....i'm struggling with her A time in the morning.have just about gotten it to 90 mins.am aiming to get to the 2 hours mark over the next week or so....fingers crossed! so i could BF at 7am, do soilds at 8am & put to bed at 9am?
-
that's what I did for sure...
-
hmm....thanks for that!it all sounds so easy when someone just tells you what to do!!! :)
-
back again!!!am all set with my stewed pears to start the whole solid food experience!!! i plan to start sat morn after the 7am feed...so my question is...!!!how long do i keep to just one "meal" per day? i know i can introduce a new food every 3 days, but do i start with breakfast AND lunch after just 3 days?!and then after another 3 days, all 3 meals?!
-
I think it took a good few weeks for us to et up to 3 meals prob nearer 8 months old tbh! Depends on his your LO takes to it!
-
we did tastes of individual foods after brekkie for 3 days, then moved them to lunch when they were good to go, added another food am etc etc. Mine both loved their solids - Emma was eating soft chunks of fruit and veg at 6.5-7mths no problem...

we didn't do teatime till closer to 8mths I think...
-
ok,great, thanks a mill...that helps alot....i'm gearing up for tomorrow morning!!!!overalls at the ready!!!
-
ok...back again!!!!gave pear mixed with ebm for the past two mornings....not entirely sure if anything stayed in,but we're trying anyway!!!
so,i'll give her the same again tomorrow morning, but where do i go from there?!should i introduce lunchtime on day 4?or should i just introduce something new at breakfast time & leave lunchtime until week 2?
-
If she's doing well with that I would give the pears a break and try something else - maybe carrots? for another three days and then from around week 2, use one of these two as your lunch base and keep intro-ing more in the am.

great, thanks!!not too sure what qualifies as "doing well" though!!!
-
Doing well is really as simple as not rejecting it and it isn't upsetting her digestion IMHO!
-
digestion seems fine so far...what counts as rejecting?!she loves chewing on the spoon...most seems to come back down her chin though!!!
-
Rejecting would be turning her head away, spitting it out etc
-
hmm...maybe she is rejecting it so...will watch carefully tomorrow morning & be back for more advice!!!
-
Spitting it out and it not being swallowed when starting out are different I think. Don't worry if it isn't going in going in too much. She has only had solids for 2 days so doesn't now how to chew/swallow yet! It is all about experimenting and having fun right now. Getting her used to new tastes and textures. Chewing the spoon is a great start TBH!
-
oh really?!well then in that case she's a pro!!!she ADORES the spoon!!!!is it ok to let her chew it so?!not too sure what i should be doing!!!she is trying to grab my hand when i feed her...
-
We used to have 2 spoons. One for Olly to play with and one for me to get the food in! Mind you think that was a bit later on. 2 days in is so very early!
-
i know!feel like it's been forever though!do you ever have days like that?!i tried giving her a spoon but she just kept eating that one & i couldnt get the one with food in!!!
-
update!!! week on on solids complete!!!gonna start giving her a lunch tomorrow aswell as breakie....wish me luck!!!lots and lots and lots of orange things in the vicinity of the highchair after the last 3 mornigns!!!
-
Good Luck and have fun! ;D
-
lunch was a HUGE success!! 1oz pear downed!!!! it's the first time she's actually finished anything!!!yay!!!!thanks for the tips & shoulder!x
-
yay!
-
lol!!!thanks shivi!!genuinely so proud of myself!!and so proud of her!!!she is still chewing the spoon goodo, but managing to get some "normal" spoonfuls into her in between!!!i htink prehaps it's me that's learning more than her!x
-
Fab news!
-
hmmm....not so fab perhaps!!!!she had a dirty nappy when i went to dreamfeed last night (1st time it's happened since she was a couple of weeks old)....so i went to change her....put her on the changing table & she started to cry, poor pet....how awful to be wrenched from your sleep & stripped!!!!i was 5 miins tryign to get her to latch on then (also never happens) she was crying & crying (also never happens-usually a v happy & placid baby)....thank goodness she latched, fed & went back down easily....i'm putting it down to the "huge" amount of pears!!!i decided to give her pears at breakfast this morning & will do sweet potato at lunch....right or wrong thing?????& was i right to change the nappy?sill question i guess
-
ahh poor pet!
Have you given sweet potato before?
