I didn't use a book - I played it by ear! Essentially you can start with whatever food you like, but you are best to keep to things that are generally well-tolerated by most los to reduce the risk of reaction. Sweet potato is a good one to introduce early on, as is carrot. Fruits I would suggest are pear or apple. Everything should be well-cooked. If you are doing blw, then you should cut it into shapes that are easy to hold, if you are doing purees then you should make them pretty smooth to start with.

In general, it is advised that you start introducing foods in the middle of the day so that if there is a reaction your lo might get over it before bedtime. It's also a good time in terms of lo being fairly receptive as they will not be overly tired. It is also generally held that you should only introduce one food every 2-3 days, again to watch for reactions, but I never worried about that too much - if you don't have a history of allergies in the family then you probably don't need to observe it if you don't want to. However, one sweet potato goes a very long way with a 6mo, so you might find yourself giving one thing for 2-3 days anyway!

I used another parenting advisor's method.  My LO didn't get constipated or suffer from broken nights as a result of her gradual approach. The recipes are really flavourful and we still use them now at 11 months. Xxx

LOL!  It gets so much easier.  After a while I had those meals ready in no time at all (prep time I mean!).   My LOs still LOVE her beef casserole and their fav was the AK spinach and sweet potato.

I also used to quadruple the amounts and make more in one go so it takes much less effort overall.

Lol it does get easier. I was so not a cook before having C, now I have turned into my mother and cook nearly every meal from scratch!! Lol. C loved the lentil and butternut squash recepie, it is actually really tasty. I also used to double up amounts and freeze it in little pots or ice cube trays in the very early days. Have fun experimenting.

bex-my sister made me some fab soup for when i came home from the hospital with my LO....she only told me recently that it was actually baby food!!!it was that lentil & butternut squash recipe in a soup version!!!!YUM!!!

It is like a soup before you blend it and I used to love it. In fact C loves soup now so I think I will dig my book out and make it for lunch. I think the food is best eaten within 1 month of freezing but I could be well off there. Does it not say in the book?

What I used to do was freeze in the ice cube tray and then once frozen pop them out into a freezer bag. I would then label the bag with the content and date, one mushy orange cube can look very much like any other! You will be cooking all sorts before long.
