Title: Forum Upgrade - Issues
Post by: nosenose on August 04, 2012, 12:07:24 pm
Hi,

The forum upgrade has been completed. If you find any problems with the new version, please report them in this thread so we can investigate them.

Thanks and enjoy the new forums!

Please note that we have an outstanding issue with timzones. If you need to fix it temporarily, you can go into your control panel and adjust the offset manually (or try the 'auto-detect' option).

We are looking into this and will fix it when we can.

Thanks for all your hard work Tom!  I fear we will never be able to let you know just how much we appreciate your efforts here in keeping things ticking along behind the scenes :)

I've had a fiddle with the timezones to see if we can get them back on track.  This post is in part a test to see if I set correctly to GMT - meaning everyone not on GMT will need to adjust accordingly as per Tom's instructions above.

Another glitch: If you compose a sentence in Quick Reply that goes past the end of the compose box, the sentence just disappears off the edge of the screen and doesn't autowrap to a new line until a number of words have been added.  Only in Quick Reply, not in reply.

In the first sentence here the sentence disappeared at the word "new" and reappeared on the new line at the word "number"

It's small on my screen too...there is empty space on the side of the site too, it doesn't fit my widescreen.

Oh, and no quote selected?  I can only quote a whole post.

CTRL+ should make your text size bigger, if that helps :)
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade - Issues
Post by: Gareth - Harvey & Theo's Dad on August 04, 2012, 23:35:20 pm
Ctrl + to make it larger, Ctrl 0 to reset to default size.

There are several "plug-ins" that need to be installed to regain certain functions, some of which may or may not address some of the issues some of you are having.

The plug-ins should be put in place over the next few days :)

Yep, as Gareth says, a lot of this is just plugins. Last night was me just concentrating on getting the upgrade done. I'll probably be tinkering over the next few evenings to get the remaining plugins sorted out :)

This is a very long sentence to test the auto-wrap in the quick reply. Wow, i'm only half way across already. Lots of words needed to reach the end. Ahh i'm there.

And it worked just fine for me :(

Not sure if it's been mentioned but the little plus sign at the bottom that makes the text area bigger oisn't there. It only allows you to type a few lines on your phone and you can't scroll down to edit.

Thanks again. Looks great!

Had a look on the old style board to see what the difference was and why it was easier for me to read all the new topics.  They were all on one line and with the username right beside the subject. The new styleee here now has the topic on one line with the user in a darker bold underneath and it sends my eyes to focus on to the bold username and not the subject.  Anyone else experiencing this or am I weird.  ???

Yes , I agree Aisling it is more muddled. Plus if the subject is long then the text overlaps any locked or sticky symbol at the end of the line on boards.

Yes I don't like to moan either but I am happy to hear others are experiencing difficulties too and it is not just a sign of old age! The stickie topics show up well as the subjects are more bold.

Yup, also finding it hard to look at and pick out the titles of posts...the way the stickies look is much preferable, and the orange new jumps out at me too!

With the grey side boarders and the avatars/user names now not minimizing the text is actually only one or two words per line on my phone which is really hard to read. I feel the grey sidebars are wasted space on a small screen.

This feature had to be disabled long before our upgrade.  I honestly can't remember why, but it was a necessary move.  Hopefully with this latest upgrade, we can renewable the search function.

it was disabled because all the searches were crashing the database.  it also never worked right; usually only looks for threads 3+ years old!   ::)  hopefully that got fixed with the upgrade!!

I'm not sure I know how to turn it on again, so hopefully Tom does!  :)

Title: Re: Forum Upgrade - Issues
Post by: nosenose on August 10, 2012, 11:02:32 am
RE the search. We cannot enable it just yet, but the upgrade has gotten rid of the major roadblock. There is a separate search engine that will be installed (Don't worry, it's still fully integrated with the site), that will handle search. This is not compatible with the old version of the forums and is one of the major reasons we did the upgrade.

I will be working on enabling it once the upgrade is complete - in other words, once all the glitches are ironed out and the forum is running correctly :)

Well after living with it for a week now I have to be honest...I don't like it.  I miss the old 'look' - is this the only theme or can we make it look more like the old board? (just asking hehe)

I get why it had to be upgraded but there are a few things that just looked better in the old version.

There.  I've said it.  An incredible weight has been lifted lol

Of course I'm very appreciative and do understand why an upgrade is necessary...just wish they didn't try to get so 'fancy' for lack of a better word...

I'm sure I'll get used to it :)

Yeah I was on my phone when I said I didn't like it.  I like it more on the laptop...but it's still shrunk/skinny/hard to read.  There has literally been no time around here for DH to do much.  He's currently working on my car brakes...it's never ending.

At least it's up and running, despite it looking a lot different and a bit finicky, it is a stepping stone to a more pumped up version with chat and search and whatever else we want to have :)

I also find the sidebars extremely limiting on my Kindle; I shudder to think how little text space would be left on my phone by the time I got the text large enough for my eyes. LOL

I still don't see that Evil Smiley emoticon..... I've seen it on other SMF forums in the past, though, I'm sure of it, so I hope it's out there someplace.

Also, if there is or can be the ability to unsubscribe to threads we've posted in without manually deleting each and every one of our posts in it, that would be great. Sometimes threads take turns OT and I lose interest in them, but I keep getting notifications.

You can do it by going to Profile and click on Notifications and the bottom lists all the threads you have posted in and click to "unnotify".  I have never tried but I told someone who did and said it worked.

I thought that was just for the emails though, and would not stop it showing in your unread replies list. I just leave those topics to last and the mark all as read.

If you go to the look and layout option under modify profile there is a box to tick that says don't notify me of new posts while replying. Have you checked if that is ticked?
Mine's unticked  :-\

Mine's unticked too, and although it was working yesterday, it isn't today?

it seems to be a multi-pronged problem.

I was reading a topic; it took me a while.  I hit reply.  No warning of other replies, but there were 2 replies that had happened in that time.

Then, when I did hit "post" , I did get a warning about a new reply.   :-\  my boxes are all what they are supposed to be.

Hi Tom
Thank you for all your work - I don't miss the bit at the top telling me how long I'd been logged in - it scary how much time adds up.  But I do miss the search function which I used a lot with dd1 (about 6 years ago).  Now I'm back with ds1, (so apologies if it has been gone for a while and you've already answered the question) but is it likely to come back any time soon?
Many thanks

Cool - just came back from 4 weeks away and was shocked to see a new BWer!   I peeked in periodically on my phone when it would connect and it hasn't changed at all in my phone appearance from what it used to be, so I was really surprised!

Thanks Tom for what must have been a big job and a lot of work!!!!

Hi Julia,

No, the search function has been disabled for quite some time, and has not yet been enabled.  We still do not have a timetable for this.  Tom is still working on installing all the plugins that used to work before the upgrade.  Once all those features have returned he will start to work on new functions.  But he, like all the rest of us, is a volunteer and squeezes in work on this site when he can.  :)

at this point, the best way to search the site is to use Google.  on the Google page, you can search for something like 4 month EASY routine site:babywhispererforums.com

Can we no longer spy on people? ;) you used to be able to see what someone was doing at the current time by clicking on their profile but that doesn't seem to show anymore. Not a major issue hut would have been handy just now when I wanted to see if a particular mod was actively reading/replying to posts while I was waiting for her to see  a post I need help with.

not easily.  :(  ;)  I miss that feature too!

there is a workaround... if you are on the main page, scroll all the way to the bottom.  You can click on the little icon next to "users online" and that will show you what everybody is doing.  there is a new little menu that you can change so it is just members only.

I thought we were fixing this issue of links not showing there titles but the confusing address...

Examples:

http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=164253.0

All of the EAS samples show an address, not the title of the thread... a little confusing!

There was a time when we could do a link URL and then give it a name, like "linky".

You use the URL tags, and the format is - no spaces inside the []:

[url = insert complete link here] This is where you type what you want the link to look like [/ url]

Below is an actual example:

Code: [Select]
[url=http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=82.0]
FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions & Related Information - EASY[/url]

Which gives you:

FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions & Related Information - EASY

However, once Tom gets the time I'm sure he'll put the plugin back in place that saves having to type it out in that format.  Personally, I thinks it's helpful for people to know how it's done and then there's no need for a plugin :)

Sorry but is it still possible to pull up my old posts?

I found one from back when I was sleep training DS1 and I think some of it may help with some issues we are having with training DS2 but .y memory is foggy.

There used to be a 'my posts' tab but I can't find it.

I have to say that BW has always been about the most user friendly forum that I have found (aside from being about the friendliest and most supportive too) so thanks for all your hard work to Tom and to the moderators too.

Love the "roller blind" thing at the bottom of the reply box.  It does the same job as the old + sign did, Vicki, to make the reply box bigger or smaller. Not sure if it works on the phone as I'm on the PC right now.

Thanks Tom. The side bars are much better. I hope it is not too ungrateful to say I still only have about 4 words per line on my phone as the screen is half avatar and half text. It was easier to read when the avatar got over lapped by the text.

I still only have about 4 words per line on my phone as the screen is half avatar and half text.

That sure sounds odd. What phone do you have? Do you have it 'zoomed in' on the page? Do you have another device you can take a picture of it with so we can see what you see?

On my phone, the avatar is about 1/5 - 1/4 of the width and then plenty of text on each line. If I pinch-to-zoom I can make the avatar fill half the screen such that I can only read a few words at a time, but that's not really the way to view pages. If I double tap the text area it zooms into that area nicely so it can be read(I am on Android though, not sure if the iPhone does this).

i have an HTC wild fire. It is small but on the old forum the picture just used to get cut off and the text spread out more. The half and half is on the full screen view. If I double tab it does zoom in but it does not change how many words are on each line, just makes the text bigger but that is annoying because i have to constantly scroll down which is a PITA when you are nursing and typing with one hand. i will see if i can take a picture.
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade - Issues
Post by: *Ali* on September 12, 2012, 22:51:46 pm
KM, I just had a thought, have you tried changing your text scaling on your internet settings? On my HTC I select menu, settings, accessibility, and text scaling. Mine is set to 150% but I can change it down to 50%.
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade - Issues
Post by: Khalam's Mama on September 12, 2012, 23:09:25 pm
I am going to sound really fussy now. i did that and I did have my text set quite large so i could see without zooming in everytime (remember one hand only here). Scaling it down did make more words on a line but then it is too small to read from arms length. I had it set at this before the upgrade and because there was not the big gap between the avatars and the text and also because the avatars automatically got over lapped i could have it set at huge and still have the text filling the screen. Not greedy am I?
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade - Issues

I looked up your phone - you are pushing the limits of do-able really as it only has a 240x300 screen... That's not a lot of pixels :(

Sorry, but there is not a whole lot I can do about it right now - but after the upgrade-aftermath work is done, I will see what I can do, if anything :)

Ok - tried to move a post for the first time since the upgrade (I think ;)) and I had the sort of the same problem as Deb. The box to select the board is teeny tiny and there's no aroow to click at the side to get the drop menu thing (there is some sort of mark but clicking on it doesn't do anything), I did manage to get the list of boards up by chance hovering at the tiny box but when selectd the board,  I couldn't see which board I had selected - the box is too small.
