just wondering, is there any recommended allowance of protein/carbs/meat/dairy/fruit/ veg etc etc for babies?LO is 8MO & i'm not entirely sure i'm giving her the right amounts of solids.id really appreciate any info anybody might have...i have been doing purees & am introducing texture at the moment but neither DH nor I have the healthiest diet (not junkfood addicts or anything, but just lazy when it comes to it...dreadful i know & i'm working on it-started eating much better during pg), so I don't trust my own judgement!TIA!

Have you checked your AK book or the NHS website? That is where I checked most things out when weaning!
-
ya, i have her book but she just gives a meal plan in the one i have...no suggestions on the number of servings of x, y, or z IYKWIM?checked out the NHS website there & it shows what to give from 1 year but not under, or not that i can find anyway....

I am sure I have seen something somewhere just cannot recall where... Was something like 2 portions of protein, 3 of carbs and then loads of fruit and veg. Not sure on dairy as Olly doesn't have any.

There's a great post on here that has loads I info. I will try and find it and post the link :)

Is your LO getting formula or breast milk?
-
we're using up the last of the frozen BM at the moment, so mostly formula.she's getting (roughly) 7oz Bm in the morning, then 6oz formula, then 2-3oz BM, then 7-8oz formula at bedtime.
thanks so much ladies.....really would appreciate any knowledge!xxx

Do you know what? I didn't worry about this. I tried to make sure I offered a good source of protein twice a day and each meal contained fruit or veg and some carbs but as they get older you can't guarantee they will eat everything they're offered anyway. Just offer lots of variety I reckon.

do you mind having a look at what i am offering at the moment?please feel free to tear it to shreds if need be!!!!! :)
Today's menu: (this would be typical)
breakfast: 1tblsp cereal mixed with BM
1 oz apricot, 1 oz peach
lunch: 1oz chicken, sweet potato & apple puree (from AK's book)
1oz butternut squash mixed with 1 tsp tiny pasta shapes
tea: 1oz apple
1 oz fromage frais (or 1oz natural yoghurt when i can get it in the shop!)
I offer finger foods with each meal too (rice cakes/organic stix/fingers)
thank you!!!

Until 1 year, there isn't a guide or recommendation for solids and what is a "balanced" diet. The reason is because until 12 months old your LO's main nutrition source needs to remain their milk (either formula or breast milk) and that in itself is perfectly balanced for their nutritional needs. Until 1yo the only real purpose of solids is to introduce them to the idea of new tastes, textures, the concept of putting food in their mouth and so on. The mantra is "food before one is just for fun" :)

I completely agree with both prior posts, breast milk or formula is their main source of nutrition until they turn one, but I always found a good guide for even my diet is protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables at each meal. And lots of things are proteins besides meat, like yogurt, cheese, and beans.

ya.i'm happy enough with her milk intake & i'm not putting any pressure on her to eat the solids...I'd just like to make the best choices for what i'm offering her, IYKWIM?i'm not giving her any "ready-meals" so i figure while i have the choice of what i give at each meal, i may as well make it a good choice!!!

Have you heard of Baby Led Weaning?

thanks nini, i have, but i'm such a control freak when it comes to ...well...everything!!!(i'm working on it!!!)our diet isn't good enough to base LO's meals on, i know that for sure.we are only learning to cook now!!!(by cook, i mean steam & puree!!!!!although we did manage an actual chicken "dish" for her last week from AK's book!!we were pathetically pleased with ourselves!!!!)

My diet is pretty bad too, and my husband's biggest complaint about me is that I don't cook for him, only for DS. But he gets home at such weird hours it's hard to even eat together most of the time. I focus my energy on the little one, and really, I just don't like to cook, sue me!!!
-
omg that is soooo us!!!!i just dont get it, putting all that time & effort into making something & then having it all gobbled up & gone so fast!!!!i made a coca-cola cake (am i allowed mention brands?!) once & was almost in tears when i saw it all being eaten!!!

I think that's all pretty good. I would be tempted though to include a bit more calories into tea time. Perhaps make some cauliflower cheese? Cook cauliflower and make a cheese sauce with milk, cornflour and cheese, then blend it all together if you're doing traditional weaning or leave it whole if you're BLW or want to give that a go. That way there's a bit more fat, some carbs and some protein at teatime. Or maybe a fish pie?
Send me a message if you'd like some recipes.
