Title: Stuck in a snack rut - share your suggestions!!
Post by: jessmum46 on November 15, 2012, 18:07:14 pm
Poor DD gets a very boring selection of snacks - pieces of fruit, rice cakes, raisins, small cubes of cheese. We rarely get more exciting than that! Any good ideas I can steal?

I should add she eats a good variety at mealtimes ;)

Did you check out the recipe boards?  There's lots of finger food ideas great for snacking

We have just recently calmed down on snacks, they have been a major part of our lives from 6 -22 months.
Mostly
- fruit
- home made pancakes (sugar free, made with fruit or veg, often a different variety made as a batch and frozen, lift a few out in the morning to defrost and eat cold, great for out and about snacking.)
- home made sugar free muffins (again fruit or veg, frozen in batches)
- home made oaty chews (bit like the organix oaty bars or a flap jack - no sugar or honey etc but included fruit.  Frozen in batches)
- home made bean burgers, I just threw stuff together, left over veg, a can of beans in water (or lentils etc), some flavour like tom puree or cheese, herbs etc and fry in batches.  Again freeze and lift out the morning you need them.
- crumpet
- fruit malt loaf
- tea cakes
- eggy bread
- oat cakes
- naan bread, pitta, tortilla wrap etc
- home made low salt pate
- frozen peas (only works for an at home snack!)

hmm..hard to think of more.
We now have a huge tin of crackers, I buy lots of different varieties to replenish the tin and DS loves being allowed to choose his own.
DS was really not into raw veg until recently but some LOs do like it.  Raw green beans, sweet peppers, sugar snap peas etc.

We used to cook the frozen peas before leaving home and just serve them cold in a little pot. There were great for keeping him busy in the supermarket trolley. Sweetcorn too.
Things we use are:
Breadsticks in soft cheese or houmous
Creme crackers with butter and marmite
Cherry tomatoes
Plain greek style yogurt, sometimes with a banana mashed in or tiny bit of honey
English muffin with jam, butter or marmite
Slices of cold meats like ham or turkey breast (check the salt)

We also use many of those Creations listed as well. HTH.
