Title: What's the equivalent?
Post by: jessmum46 on November 26, 2012, 11:14:58 am
Just wondering if anyone knows how much yoghurt, cheese etc is considered the equivalent of 1oz milk?  Thanks :)

I think it's the same 1oz = 1oz.

It depends on what you mean by equivalent? An ounce is an ounce is an ounce, regardless of what it is an ounce of iyswim.  If you mean in terms of nutrition, then it depends what you are measuring.  For instance for calcium, 8oz of milk has appx 300 mg of calcium, and yogurt about the same, but you only need about 1.5 ounces of cheese to get the 300 mg of calcium.  But if you are looking at fat, protein, calories, etc then it will depend on the fat content, etc etc.

Agree Mashi.  In terms of counting how many oz a LO is taking in 'milk' per day the solids are counted as 1oz = 1oz equivalent so if 1oz of yogurt is taken then LO might drop 1oz bm or formula.  You're right it isn't going to be the same in calcium, fat etc so yes it does depend on the specific question.

Sorry, obviously an Oz is an Oz  :P  my reason for asking is I'm trying to transition DD to milk in a sippy during the day rather than bf, and she doesn't take much as yet. Just wanting to make sure she's not missing out on what she needs nutritionally x
