Title: what breakfast cereals do you give your LO?
Post by: *happy* on December 04, 2012, 09:28:38 am
just looking for ideas on good "normal" cereals to give LOs??
i have given her weetabix & ready brek on the advice on my PHN, & we are finishing off the last of a few different boxes of baby cereals now, so i thought it might be nice for her to try out some normal adult cereals now...

We gave Cheerios here, don't know what an equivalent would be for you.  Hoping more eyes will see this.

porridge, muesli, plain wheat puffs.  I used to give cheerios but then read how much sugar is in them in the uk  :o  >:(!!  But B still remembers them and is always badgering me to buy them  ::)

Cheerios in the UK are totally different to those in the US, I think it's important to read all the ingredients in any cereal because they vary country to country.
I still give DS baby muesli (made into balls as finger food) because he won't eat wheatabix, regular muesli, porridge or ready break and tbh they are the only cereals I'd be willing to offer.  I know the baby cereal is more expensive but the one I buy is so much healthier than other cereals I feel it's worth the cost.  I don't consider cereal in the UK to be good nutritional value or a good start to the day.  I mix it up with toast (with pate, cream cheese or marmite), eggy bread, pancakes and even prefer him to have a couple of home made sugar free muffins rather than regular cereal.
It's a hard decision to make which cereal to go for, hope you find something you're happy with x

I don't know about a GDA for babies, but there are a few particular guidelines, for instance no more than 1g of salt per day for up to 12 months.  Girls no more than 2 portions of oily fish per week (boys this is 4 portions).  Then the 'general' stuff like no honey before 12 months, no sugar, fully cooked eggs etc

There is a guidance to toddler portions but for under 1yr I think really it is more about a variety of foods being introduced for experience of flavour and texture and then making sure milk intake isn't either too much or too little.  Once she reaches 1yr you could look at the toddler portions but I think it has to be viewed with a little caution after all some LOs are bigger than others, and there's a big difference between a 1yr toddler and a 3yr toddler.

I would look for cereal with zero sugar and honey and a very low salt level.

happy, we give porridge and sometimes I mix oats with yogurt and honey (only after 1yo like creations said), you can also grate an apple in.
What I do now is make rice pudding but I use brown rice and I make it the evening before because it takes so much time to make and DS wants his breakfast as soon as he is up, lol!

I can't believe how diffferent the cereals are from country to country! Cheerios have 1 gram of sugar here, but in the UK they have like 10?   :o   I do offer Cheerios sometimes...we put blueberries on top, or a few slices of banana.  I also make her organic oatmeal...(one of the only ones I could find that wasn't loaded with sugar!) and add cinnamon and applesauce to it.  She has been having that since she was a baby.

so there's nothing wrong with continuing the "baby" cereals then?once the sugar content is low that is....
my sister is in america & her 3YO still loves his cheerios & blueberries!!!he would live off them if he could!xxx

Not sure what you mean...? The oatmeal I give her isn't for infants....it is for kids, though...I started giving it to her when she was about a year.  Cheerios are always a hit around here....even dry as a snack with some fruit!

Happy, I think I added to your confusion because I do still give DS baby cereal (at nearly 2yrs).  It's a 'my first muesli' for 10 months+ no sugar but does have fruit in it so is sweet with that, it's also fortified with lots of vits.  It's more nutritional than a regular adult cereal so there is no harm in continuing it.

At this age we moved to ready brek (no added sugar or salt) and stayed on that for quite a while.  We then gradually introduced weetabix and then mixed it up a bit after about 12 months.  I never got into the habit of using 'fruit sweetened' cereals because they can be very sweet even if the fruit is natural.  I wanted to get him onto more savoury stuff asap and he's kept on with that and still doesn't have really sweet cereals.

In the EU, the food information regulation will force companies to give you ingredients and nutritional information at point of purchase even if that's online.  It comes into force in 2014 but most companies in the UK are already doing this now.  Might be worth having a more in depth look at the website you use, it might be there.
