Title: Thickeners and tummy pain - anyone btdt, does it get better?
Post by: ZacsMumme on January 05, 2013, 22:59:50 pm
Every time I use thickener for T he gets an upset tummy. :-\
It's a catch 22 though because if I don't he refluxes.

Wondering if anyone else's LO seemed to get tummy trouble with thickeners AND they stuck with it and the tummy pains went away. Ie LO gets used to it. ???

What thickener are you using?  Used Simply Thick for Mouse without problems.  Rice cereal, disaster.

Infant gav causes him a worse belly ache. I suspect it's the corn deriv that's the problem? Or maybe the fact he's on neocate so not a lot else is digested?

A bit of ranting in the ad, but eh..  This is the stuff I used.  Generally bought it on E-bay as it was cheaper that way.  Also come in bottles with a pump.  Lovely stuff.  There is a warning not to use in preemies as it may contribute to NEC.  (years after my preemie used it.)
I think someone here has used plain xanthan gum for their babe, but not 100% certain there.

Is it the same as this?

If so, has the warning been extended to all infants? ...

We used a bit of rice cereal in bottles for a while but it caused James to have constipation. James was not diagnosed with reflux though but was told to give it a go as a slightly thicker formula may cause less wind apparently. I was never convinced but to be honest probably did not trial it long enough with it causing constipation.

That's the stuff Sara.  All I could find was the preemie warning.

Yes I remember seeing that the Simply Thick warning has been extended as of last year - it was shortly after we used it. From what I've read (back then), it was mostly a preventive measure as there was no direct link other than with preemies I think.

it did give M tummy aches and smelly poos :( it is the only thickener we tried. But I now know that M cannot tolerate starch so I think that must've been the cause for us.

I've also heard of Gelmix
