Title: Solids causing gas?
Post by: deborah_c on January 06, 2013, 17:44:34 pm
DS is 5.5 months old and our pediatrician had us start him on solids a couple of weeks ago.  We started him off on oatmeal the first couple of weeks and yesterday I introduced sweet potato.  The first week or so he really hadn't gotten the hang of it, so I'd estimate that he didn't really eat more than a teaspoon or two at most.  Recently he has figured it out and is eating bigger quantities (2-3 TBSP a day).  For the past 4-5 days I've noticed an increase in the amount of gas he is passing (and it really stinks!), and he seems uncomfortable at the times he is passing it.  It usually happens more frequently closer to bedtime, and some days he has also been waking early around 4:30 or 5am which I suspect may be due to some gas discomfort (although he doesn't wake screaming or showing a lot of discomfort).

Anyone have an issues similar to this or is it common for solids to cause gas?  I'm not positive the gas is correlated to the solids, but the timing seems to be about right and I'm not sure why else he would have more gas recently.

Nothing helpful to offer, but I've been noticing the same thing in my 6 mo!

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the solids are causing the gassiness while his tummy gets used to them.  My DD has had quite a bit of gas as well since starting solids, she is a tooting machine!  lol  If you think a particular food is cause for concern you could always stop it and try it again later.  I would go slow with solids introduction so you can figure out if something is bugging him and stop it if you need to, otherwise just proceed slowly and give him time to adjust to the new foods.  What times do you give him solids?  Maybe just stick to giving them at breakfast or lunch only and not before bed to try and avoid bedtime gassiness.

Thanks for the reply.   The past 2 days I gave him oatmeal in the morning around 8am, and the sweet potatoes after his next feed, around noon.  I'm trying to stay away from giving him solids later in the day to try to minimize the night wakings due to discomfort.  At least so far he doesn't seem to be in a ton of discomfort, just more than usual.   I'll take it slow for now and hopefully his little tummy adjusts over the next month or so!  Thanks again!

Same with my LO. I still can only give him solids in the AM as any later and it affects his sleep. He wakes early too around 5am and no obvious signs of discomfort except he can't resettle and although sleeping constantly rolls around and toots.
