Four servings of milk? Two servings of vegetables? Relax. When experts talk about toddler servings, they're talking about very small amounts. Here, in real-life terms, is what a typical tot needs a day:
MILK: 4 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1/2 cup of whole milk or 1/2 cup of full-fat yogurt or 1 1/2 ounces of cheese (approximately 1 inch square)
GRAINS: 6 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1/2 slice of bread or 1/4 cup cereal or 1/4 cup rice or paste or 3 crackers (approximately Saltine size)
FRUITS: 2 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1/4 fresh fruit, sliced or cubed, or 2 tablespoons pureed or 3 ounces of juice
VEGETABLES: 2 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1 to 2 tablespoons of well-cooked or pureed vegetables
PROTEIN: 2 SERVINGS
A serving equals 1 egg (cooked however your child will eat it) or 1 to 2 tablespoons of meat, fish or poultry or 1 to 2 tablespoons of legumes, including tofu and beans.
Bon appetit! :D

Carla
Thank you so much for the info :D . I made it into an announcement so it won't get pruned.

Boy, am I glad I stumbled onto this....I have been so paranoid about sizes and portions.....thanks tons, Carla!
-
Thanks Carla for posting this...great info!

Is a two and a half year old a toddler? ( Are these serving sizes the same for that age group?)
thanks
-
bumping - can a mod make this a sticky please??? :)
-
what age is considered a toddler? 13 months?
-
I think Tracy Hogg says it can be anything from 8 months!
-
Thanks for this it's very useful - printed and on the fridge too :)
-
Need to print off and use as a referrence...however, those servings are still WAY MORE then I can get Weston to eat on a daily basis. :-[ He's by no means small or having trouble gaining weight, he's always been in the BIGGER range..(guess he has a SLOW metab) :-\
-
I was going to say the same - I'd love to be able to persuade dd to eat that much on a daily basis!
She however is small and doesn't gain weight so easily. Irritating child >:(
-
Thank you so much for posting this! I'm printing it right now and putting it on the fridge, becuase I keep thinking in adult terms.
-
I just read that if you find yourself thinking in 'adult terms' it's easier to realize that toddlers serving size is about 1/4th of adult servings...makes it a little easier to get Weston's dinner plate ready that way. :)

This is great!!! I'm not so worried about my LO's intake of veggies as much anymore :P This really helps to plan my meals for Sunshine.
Thank you Carla
-
Thank you for the info. :D
I have realized my lo doesn't eat enough grains, but I'm not too worried because at least she's eating ;) She's such a small eater that to get that much grain into her, she'd be missing out on other parts of her meal. Not too worried, but will try to follow that chart. :) Must print it out. Thanks.

my son Weston would never eat that much food in one day...we too are not getting that many grains in...and I feel like he has too many crackers IMHO...as long as he's good on his fruit & veggies with some sort of protein each day, I'm happy ;)
-
Falling down on the grains ... oh no ... everything else is a check check check and some (like cheese and fruit!) are a check plus plus! Will have to make more of an effort. Thanks for this excellent post - its always a worry that DD is eating enough of the right stuff. Definitely book marked!

glad to see my LO is pretty much getting the right amount if not more, she also has over 500ml of milk a day!!!! plus all the food...
-
Brilliant! Thanks - I printed it and it is on my fridge as I write! Seeing it I realize that dd is pretty much eating what she should be...phewf!
-
Oh my goodness, there is no way my DD is getting that amount of food into her in a day. She gets less than half the amount of milk now that we just took away her overnight milk bottles (she is 14 months and I didn't think she needed to wake up overnight anymore to get milk) but she won't drink milk except when she heads to bed. I don't really want to give her juice, so we water it down quite a bit and she might get 500ml of that a day, plus half a Yop yogurt drink. I just tried her on the V8 fusion juice which blends fruit and veggies, but I noticed it doesn't have any fibre in it, and it is fairly high in natural sugars. Not sure this is the best for her. She only has 3 teeth, so she spits out anything too chunky or hard to bite (such as veggies and meat). She loves the carbs though, so I am thinking of switching to whole wheat pasta so she can get her grains.
Thanks Carla for posting, it gave me lots to work on in the very near future!

This is so good to know as I have been wondering for so long if my daughter is getting enough. Thanks for the heads up on this!
-
I give way more fruit and veg than that! Is that bad? He probably has 1/4 of a fruit with every meal and maybe 1-2 spoons of veg with lunch and tea. Ooops!
Also no need to puree anymore surely?

Hi, the more I search on this forum the more I discover how rich it is!
my lo is 2yrs and 4months, she eats all of the mentioned portions or more or less, I see I need to focus more on grains less on fruits.
However she had a foot cramp last week! It was so painful, called the dr and he said she needs to have one banana a day! Bc this is a sign of lack of magnesium! Which is not alarming.
Their bodies is fast growing and their need for minerals, that u find in fruits and vegs is high, so just wanted to emphasis the need for the fruits... The banana especially! :) great thread! Thx
